  1. HH, BillVon, and SM1 ponder updating the format of the site.
  2. Here's a picture of a monkey expressing his displeasure with CoconutMonkey for running out of tequila.
  3. Oh, come on. I'm not a Democrat, but I am a student of politics, and the American process of elections is really cool. It's messy. The caucus process is especially messy. In Iowa it's totally different than in California. In California, you can't have campaigning, signs, pamphlets etc. within sight, pretty much, of the polling places. In Iowa tonight, these folks are in a neighbors living room arguing with campaign staffers! Anything can happen! Wierd and uniquely American, regardless of any party affiliation.
  4. Why, that's Howard Dean, who is currently being caucussed in Iowa. Don't be scared, he's a Doctor .
  5. Yeah, but it has a lot to do with the perception of "momentum". Since Bush isn't in the contest yet, he's running unopposed for the Republican nomination, I don't really think the State of the Union thing will affect the Democratic contest much. Other than the Dem candidates reaction to it. This is where I think Dean may have gotten a little too rough a little too early. The Dem base had fun with his attacks on Bush, and they really resonated with a lot of folks, but Americans have a hard time staying hot-angry for months at a time.
  6. Here, let me make things worse. You loser.
  7. Yeah, Q, the likely actual winner tonight. Not the personal favorite. According to the pundits, the question that dominates the folks in Iowa is "can this candidate go all the way and win the presidency?" Edit: Here's a couple of Iowa State sources of info: http://www.iowacaucus.org/candidates.html http://www.sos.state.ia.us/
  8. Yeah, 20+ years ago That ROTC haircut was REALLY uncool then. Edited once math was done on date.
  9. Normally the Secretary of State dictates the random rotation on ballots, but this is what I got. Who wins tonight? The avatar is just to celebrate tonights caucuses (cockeye?) Who takes it?
  10. 1976 4-door Volkswagon Rabbit. Lime green. Dude, that was a chick magnet. Did the car give me issues, well, this was my third car (after having my brand-new CRX totalled three days after 6 months on the waiting list to buy it)
  11. My wife does. She hangs out at the DZ when we're done, sees all the pictures, watches all the video. She's done two tandems and did my first kiss pass on the second one. She doesn't jump because she's concerned about our kids. Is snorkeling like SCUBA diving? Sorta. But the snorkeler understands the experience an order of magnitude more than the person on the beach, or even in the boat.
  12. http://www.royal-lens.com/fov.htm Check that one out for the differing fields of view http://www.royal-lens.com/oper_instr.htm That one talks about how those particular lenses can be zoomed only half way. So yes, an .3 can be zoomed to about a .45. I have both the .3 and the .5 from Diamond, and I'm finding I use the .5 more. I like to get in close enough for expressions and it's a better match for the 20 on my 10D. The .3 is a pretty good match for my 14 on the 10D

Bill, thanks, what a great way to start the day! Now, I'm new on the skydive photography scene so nobody cares when they see an emailed proof for publication by JP Kelly. However, when they see in the subject line that it's a picture of Mike McGowan, well, they open it! This is the picture I took of Mike right then. After I got his attention with my flash he took mine! And MonkeyOne has no problemo with the geekeandese. Dang, that was a fun jump. New Year's Eve, too. Edit: McGowan is my hero. His explanation and proofs of how flash helps skydiving photography really took me to the next level. If I hadn't seen that a person could jump with that much gear on his head, I'da never have attempted it. Look at this guy's helmet!
  14. That guy should have been in Eloy a couple of weeks ago. We took care of the planet.
  15. $59.99 at Calumet $56.50 at B&H Search for "300-QRC" It is the same mount.
  16. Do it. I was having so much fun, and getting such good stuff, that my video concession owner, who can squeeze three nickles out a dime, got a rebel and a flash we are now offering digital stills at Bay Area Skydiving. There is no downside. Well, other than as you strive to take it to the next level, you have to buy more gear. The next DeuceHelmet, the Mark III Mod zero, will feature a quantum battery pack, two 550EX flashes linked wirelessly firing high-speed ETTL. That can get expensive, but getting e-mail from the editors of Parachutist or Skydiving magazines asking for the full-resolution pictures of the files you sent is absofreakinlutely priceless.
  17. That "compact quick release" is a Stroboframe QR 300. You can get them from B&H or Calumet for about $65 I think. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist.jsp&A=getpage&Q=RootPage.jsp http://www.calumetphoto.com/syrinx/ctl?PAGE=Controller&ac.ui.pn=home.Home&ns=1 Edit, Yeah they are plenty strong enough.
  18. We've been getting a lot of posts regarding wideangle lenses, and the advantages and disadvantages of the different lenses put out by Kenko, Sony, WayCool, and Diamond. Max Cohn owns Diamond. Anyhow, while surfing my usual haunts I found that the site has been updated, and has instructions on how to focus the single-element lenses, the different fields of view of the different lenses (.3 vs .5 vs .43 etc.), thread sizes of the different models of Sony cameras, and size comparisons and stuff. So for you folks looking for info on wideangle lenses, there's some decent info here. JP www.royal-lens.com
  19. Grega, micro DV is a pain in the ass to edit and you can't firewire it, and plain ole just don't get one. Most everybody is shooting Sony mini- DV. You'll just be much more compatable if you use that format. JP
  20. Yeah, we've got Vectors and they are a challenge. JP
  21. Flat is easiest if you don't do tandems a lot. Angled up is better if you need a little help getting down to where you can see the chest strap. I can do tandems now without the angle, but it was a big help as I learned how to do it.
  22. Easy for you to say! You live in a presumptive carry state! (forgive me )
