  8. People tought I was half crazy when I bought my Stiletto 150 @ 150 jumps (1.3) Now I am at about 250 jumps, and this canopy is phukin' fast when you want it to be. I think that I would need another 100 jumps on a smaller and newer to get the same feel for it. Tell this guy to watch Rickster Powell's swoops in antigravity, afterwards tell him what size of Stiletto he was flying. Bottom line: 100 jumps, Stiletto 120 and Velocity 96 on the shelf: Toodoo doom doom doom Another one bites the dust. "Don't make me come down there" - God. 10. Something you all know, if you know the guys at your DZ, you just know who's going to get hurt. There's this guy I know flying a contrail 120 @ about 1.7, In his last say 75 jumps (all estimates) I've seen him hit the ground knees first quite hard, then pull up and standing it up after 6 times (quite some average huh...). Everyone knows some bad s@#& is going to happen, in fact he is the only one that thinks he's an ace canopy pilot. I don't have a lot of jumps under my belt, and I am constantly front risering (started at about 100 jumps on sabre 150 which I sold 20 jumps later because it was killing my back). When I had about 30 jumps on my Stiletto 150 (1.3 depending...) the exact same thing happened to me, little miscalculation, knees hitting first before I could create enough lift to pull up again and "land" on my feet. This experience made me humble, and I've been a lot safer, if the situation looks only 99% OK, I'll go straight in. Before this incident people looked at me exactly the same as they did at this other guy, and I didn't care. Now this has changed. After all, if you think of it it's just a piece of cloth designed to get you on the ground safely. To all you + 1000 jumpers this might be an evident yadiyadi post, but for the newer guys to the sport: better safe than sorry. By the way, get coaching! "Don't make me come down there" - God. 15. I like +/- 180° front risering. I release the pressure somewhere in the last 90°, and if possible I go a bit further so I can make a light turn in the surf, love it. I decide not to try this 1 out of 3 times, if there's something that remotely looks like it might become anything less than the perfect situation I just go for a shallow toggle 90°, this gives me more speed than you would expect. Any landing that feels like stepping from the sidewalk onto the street is perfect for me. "Don't make me come down there" - God. 16. Been jumping at Skydive Zeeland for the past 2 weekends, and I loved it. Being a commercial centre you have to be prepared to wait for a slot in between tandems. Last week we went there with our 4-way team and a cameraflier, they gave us about 15 minutes to pack and brief for the next jump between 2 jumps, but you won't always be so lucky. The 2 landing areas that they use are easy to spot, and don't have any obstacles that might be dangerous when flying your landing pattern. That's for the skydiving part. If you want to be at 14000ft in 15 minutes, don't go to this centre, but if youu want to enjoy some jumps with a magnificent vieuw over the water, but you also want to enjoy the evenings, this is a place I can reccomend. I met some of the coolest people out there. Everyone is welcomed as if they were coming there for several years, no problems drinking a beer and sleeping over, and no types around that act like skygods that only talk to +1000 jumpers. There are some skygods around (at least in my book) and they are willing to share their experience. Bottom line, except for my own club the coolest place on earth, if I'm not @ sky-dive.be malle, chances are extremely high that you will find me at Midden Zeeland airport having the time of my life.
  17. That wasn't a rude question, I hadn't paid attention for a couple of jumps, didn't have much time in between jumps. Believe me, I made some huge mistakes, and this has woken me up, I'm paying much more attention now! "Don't make me come down there" - God. 18. The most important thing is to make a difference between airspeed and groundspeed. When you let the canopy fly (toggles completely up) your airspeed will be constant. When flying downwind you will now have a higher speed than if you were flying upwind. applying half brakes will change your canopies AoA (angle of attack), making the canopy get a lower airspeed, and a slower sink rate. Putting 2 and 2 together, when applying half brakes this will result in (in relation to distance travelled on the ground): -when upwind: the slower airspeed will give you an even slower groundspeed, so although you will have a slower descent , you will loose more altitude over the same distance on the ground than when you are flying on full speed. -when downwind, you will reduce your airspeed but also your rate of descent, you will still have a high groundspeed so you will travel more distance on the ground. Note: For this theory, I assumed positive winds, if there's only very light winds, it kinda depends on what kind of canopy you are flying, but I think this isn't a bad explanation to start with, please feel free to correct or to add info, I didn't attend University for this! If you're up to it, maybe I'll see you at Midden Zeeland this weekend Parrot, will be there friday and saturday, I still owe some cash over there. "Don't make me come down there" - God. 19. After tracking away from a great 4 way @ Midden Zeeland (Holland) this weekend I had a great opening, yanked the back riser to head for the field, pulled down slider, opened helmet visor and chest-strap, taking my time. Then I took my toggles and pulled them down to get out of half brakes. Then it went quite fast, I did more than 360° before I got the canopy straight again, one steering line was blocked. I decided to give it another try, yanked right steering line (still holding down left one but prepared for quite an agressive turn if right came loose) ... nothing, 1500 ft, one last try, otherwise bye-bye stiletto, welcome PD reserve, yank, loose! felt quite good not having to cutaway at that altitude. (I know it's more than high enough, but just for fun look down at 1500 ft and see how you like the view...) The reason for this blocked steering line: wwwwwaaaayyyyy obvious answer, multiple twists in the steering lines. I didn't check this when packing because we had about 8 minutes to get packed and ready to go again. Note 1 to self: even in hurry-hurry circumstances, push "keep cool and take your time button" ON Another interesting lesson learned: I shouldn't have taken so much time getting down my slider and such Note 2 to self: Don't forget to switch "keep cool and take your time button" OFF when not needed 2 lessons learned on one jump, and one reserve pack saved, sure counts as a low cost jump in my book.
  20. The pilot wasn't using flaps, in the case of the 207 soloy you want to keep a good airspeed because this is one of these aircraft that stalls easy on low airspeed with a few jumpers in the door (aft of the aircrafts CG) Our pilots always wear bailout rigs (legally obliged) The cameraflier has gotten his new rig yesterday, again with a D-ring, but he's going to have it replaced on both his rigs. I'm having mine replaced by a second pillow as well when I have my next repack (in 2 weeks) Skydiving is too dangerous not to cancel out all possible risks that can be controlled. 21. 2 weeks ago an experienced cameraflier at my club (+2000 jumps)had his reserve coming out when he got out of the door (in cameraposition.) Somehow his D-ring got caught behind something when he was climbing out. His reserve passed below the tail (Cessna 207 soloy) and pulled him of. He hit the tail with one foot, causing no injury, made a 12500ft reserve ride and landed safely. There was quite some damage to the tail, which is being repaired now. 3 other jumpers were still inside the plane, they noticed a bump, and knew that they lost the cameraflier, then got out and executed the jump as planned. The aircraft landed safely. It is needless to say that everyone was EXTREMELY lucky, and that this situation could have been a catastrophy. If this reserve would have entangled with the plane's tail, it would have propably resulted in 5 fatalities. I definitely noticed that this got lots of jumpers at my club thinking about less obvious dangers when stepping inside our aircraft, just to be able to jump out of it at 12500ft for fun. 22. I've gone from Sabre 150 to Stiletto 150. A world of difference in the openings, it's more responsive, and gives you more speed, I love it. Was planning to downsize, but people at the DZ gave me the same advise, why go smaller??? By the way, in Antigravity, wasn't Ricster Powell flying a Stiletto 150??? 23. I think at most clubs there is enough footage on how not to swoop!!! Maybe take a look at them first. At my DZ there are 2 cameraflyers that jump with napkins over there heads, and both of them tend to hook too low sometimes, great footage, the kind of footage were you think AUCH, that must hurt! Maybe canopy control courses are the best resource for learning to swoop. By the way, I got very lucky on one jump (hooked way too low, hit the ground with my knees before I was able to pull up and still stand on my feet), so I'm not quite a reference in safe landings, I've become much more carefull since. 24. The one I jumped was in this Vectra harness. A lot of work had been done on slider and brake set up to soften the openings, as they were pull & bammm on the first couple of jumps, and the owner needed about four days of spinal recovery to get ready for the next weekend skydiving. The openings were still pull & auch for me, but the owner told me that they were great in relation to the openings he had at first. As for the steering part, very very tame, and the flare... yeah well.... The fabric is very funny, it's like a very cheap imitation op zero-p, has a very strange feel when packing. If you're planning on buying an Onyx, I have only one advise: DON'T!!! see you laters alligatorzzzzzzzz!
  25. Have tried out spectres, contrails, cobalts, springo and onyx (the last one just to tell a friend how I liked it) Liked the cobalt, but they aren't really in the second-hand market out here. The springo was a bit weird... Liked the spectre very much! Took the Stiletto because I liked the test-jumps, and because it was available at a reasonable price. I'll probably be buying a second rig next year, by that time I'll do looooaaaaads of canopy testing to figure outwhat I want, the Stiletto 150 will give me a chance to build up some experience.
