Occupy Toronto (Canada) Message Becoming Muddled
skydiver604 replied to skydiver604's topic in Speakers Corner
Occupy Toronto protesters don't seem as organized or clear on their message to the world. http://www.torontosun.com/2011/11/05/occupy-torontos-message-gets-muddled TORONTO - When Occupy Toronto’s Chris Wiseman is asked what the protesters’ main goals and messages are, he looks down, shuffles his feet and sheepishly looks to a colleague seated nearby. “It’s an expression of discontent and ... a speaking of conscience against the global economic system,” said Wiseman, 27, outside the occupiers’ media tent in the northeast end of St. James Park in the King St. E. and Jarvis St. area of downtown, where occupiers have camped since mid-October. Fellow organizer Alexander Brown, 40, when asked the same questions, was as scattershot in his answer as Wiseman was vague, quietly ranting about everything from the “privatization” of the world economy to genetically-modified food to global warming.Neither organizer could say how long the occupation of the park will continue, although several unions have donated three yurts for the demonstrators to use during the winter months. “So far, we haven’t had any message from (authorities) that what we’re doing here is a threat to safety,” said Wiseman, a film editor with a “long-standing interest in political philosophy and alternative economics.” “We’re here to practice our democratic rights,” he said. All around the area of the media tent sat signs reading: “Corporate Feudalism!” and “Capitalism Creates Poverty! and F--- Rent!” While the raw passion for protest and changing society may be there, the ill-defined messages being conveyed by most Occupy organizers these days will cause the movement to eventually “fizzle out,” says Kalle Lasn, whose magazine, Adbusters, sparked the birth of the first demonstrations in New York in mid-October. The Occupy movement to a large degree has been taken over by “the loony left,” said Lasn, whom he describes as “visitors” to the movement who have clouded its original messages with unfocused, left-leaning rhetoric. “I see some organizers being interviewed on TV and I just cringe” said Lasn, who estimates there are around 100,000 occupiers that have set up encampments around the world. “The difference is...most now will say, ‘We want to overthrow capitalism’ or, ‘Tax the rich!’ But if you talk to the intellectuals in the movement, they will say it’s to see a deep changing of capitalism. The Occupy movement came to life in July when Adbusters called on “redeemers, rebels and radicals” to flood New York’s financial district in protest of economic disparity. It also made several specific demands though its website, one being for a Robin Hood tax: a 1% fee on financial transactions and trades that would be divvied up to “fund every social program and environmental initiative in the world.” By mid-September, around 1,000 protesters — mostly a hodgepodge of young and loosely-organized idealists — took to Wall Street, claiming to represent 99% of the people on the planet, whom they see as the have-nots. They marched in protest of what they called the 1% — the small, tight knot of political and corporate elite running the economy on the backs of the have-nots. As the New York demonstration gained momentum, others started popping up in other cities throughout North America — Atlanta, Tulsa, Buffalo, Vancouver, and Halifax are just some — as well as various places worldwide. The movement landed in Toronto in mid-October, putting forth a challenge to city hall on how to deal with the occupation of the downtown park. “We’ve got a group of people that have occupied one of our public parks, and who don’t really have an objective or goal,” said Councillor Giorgio Mammoliti, who doesn’t buy the view Occupy Toronto advocates on behalf of the majority of people in this country. “In Canada we have a good quality of life, and we should be proud of what we’ve built.” Mammoliti said. “People get up in the morning and...look after their families, and they do that by working.” In other words, said Mammoliti, things aren’t as bad as demonstrators say. Median after-tax income for unattached people in Canada remained stable from 2008 to 2009 at $25,500, according to Statistics Canada. And the prevalence of “unattached individuals” with low, after-tax income decreased from 30.5% in 2005 to 26.7% in 2009. Low, after-tax income among families also decreased during that period, but to a lesser extent. Did a search and couldn't find any usable info,,,I just got my 230 Silhouette back from PD after getting it relined with 550 micro line. Is there any specific process I need to follow for the first jumps, I checked the PD website an couldn't find any info there either. -

Burglar's family awarded $300,000 in wrongful death suit
skydiver604 replied to jclalor's topic in Speakers Corner
Not at all,,,all this does is sends a message to criminals that they have more "rights" than their victims. The moment you perform an illegal act against someone whether it burglary, vandalism, thievery , rape , assault, bullying or murder you have given up your "rights" and if in the process of performing said illegal act you get beaten, maimed or killed well that's too bad. It all about taking responsibility for your actions. "The greater danger for most of us is not that our aim is too high and we miss it, but that it is too low and we reach it." - Michelangelo -
I totally agree that flying a parachute is something that needs to be learned visually. Im curious were you ever trainned on radios or another form of TA like an arrow?? We don't have any of these where we are. Our students are briefed to land and fly on visuals. We use the audible to give them some extra info about there height and decent rate so they can focus on learning to fly visually without using there altimeter. It allows them to see what the appropriate heights look like when they have never seen them before. Trained on radios for the first 3-6 jumps, then its up to the student to set up their own circuit based on what they were taught and also actually being able to see how the circuit looks from the air. the GCI would only get on the radio to make minor adjustments or provide guidance if things went for shit. Windsocks, it was up to the student to look at the windsock and determine the circuit pattern based on wind direction , speed etc. All of these combined taught me to fly the circuit based on conditions on the ground and in the air and to be able to adapt and change the circuit when the unexpected happens. This is so true,,, my first jump was at 270 pounds on a Man of War 320 with a very large reserve. Crawling around in the 182 was very difficult, getting a stable exit (dynamic exit) extremely difficult, soft landings, next to impossible. It was difficult enough that I quit jumping for a year to lose some weight, went back into jumping the following year at 208 pounds, what a huge difference, all my problems from the previous year just disappeared. The dz I did my progression at discourages students from using audibles until they've completed at least 100 jumps. This is to ensure students have altitude awareness entrenched in their brain. During freefall progression a student will fail a jump if the instructor does not see the student checking his altimeter to ensure altitude awareness is maintained. My instructors also discouraged altimeter use in the pattern once you were established on the downwind leg. We were taught at about 1000 ft set up your down wind leg, once the downwind leg was set up we were required to make our turns onto base and final based on other traffic in the pattern, wind speed and direction and any obstacles such as wind socks / blades and our position relative to the landing area. The 900 600 and 300 ft altitudes are used as learning tool for what the pattern should look like to be able to land safely my instructor stressed that the other factors mentioned above actually determine when you turn onto base and final and what height you make your turns. I can honestly say that I very rarely check my altimeter once my circuit pattern is set up, instead I focus on avoiding canopy collisions, wind speed and direction and set up final to ensure I land safely. Just my 2 cents. "The greater danger for most of us is not that our aim is too high and we miss it, but that it is too low and we reach it." - Michelangelo

How is it possible to ship food from China cheaper -- than having it produced in Canada or the U.S.? FOR EXAMPLE THE "OUR FAMILY" BRAND OF THE MANDARIN ORANGES SAYS RIGHT ON THE CAN FROM CHINA .. SO FOR A FEW MORE CENTS I BOUGHT THE LIBERTY GOLD BRAND OR THE DOLE IS FROM CAL .. ALL "HIGH LINER" AND MOST OTHER FROZEN FISH PRODUCTS COME FROM CHINA OR INDONESIA . THE PACKAGE MAY SAY "PACIFIC SALMON" ON THE FRONT, BUT LOOK FOR THE SMALL PRINT. MOST OF THESE PRODUCTS COME FROM FISH FARMS IN THE ORIENT AND THERE ARE NO REGULATIONS ON WHAT IS FED TO THESE FISH. ALSO WATCH FOR PICKLES. A LOT OF THE NO-NAME PICKLES COME FROM INDIA . BICK'S HAVE RECENTLY CEASED OPERATIONS IN CANADA -- DON'T BUY THEM . Another example was in canned mushrooms. No-Name brand came from Indonesia. Next to them were President Choice brand. Produce of Canada!! The P. C. went into my grocery bag. Also check those little fruit cups we give our children. They use to be made here in Canada in the Niagara region until about 2 years ago.....They are now packaged in China !!!! While the Chinese, export inferior and even toxic products and dangerous toys and goods to be sold in Canadian markets, the media wrings its hands and criticizes the Harper Government for perceived errors. Yet 70% of North Americans believe that the trading privileges afforded to the Chinese should be suspended!! Well, duh. Why do you need the government to suspend trading privileges? SIMPLY DO IT YOURSELF CANADA!! Simply look on the bottom of every product you buy, and if it says 'Made in China ' or 'PRC' (and that now includes Hong Kong), simply choose another product, or none at all. You will be amazed at how dependent you are on Chinese products, and you will be equally amazed at what you can do without. Who needs plastic eggs to celebrate Easter? If you must have eggs, use real ones and benefit some Canadian farmer. Easter is just an example; the point is not waiting for the government to act.. Just go ahead and assume control on your own. Canadian Thermos bottles were made here for many years.. Thermos sold out in the 1990's and now the bottles, those that keep our food warm or cold are now made in CHINA .. We lost---about 200 jobs! THINK ABOUT THIS, If 200 million North Americans refuse to buy just $20 each of Chinese goods, that's a billion dollar trade imbalance resolved in our favour...fast!! The downside? Some Canadian businesses will feel a temporary pinch from having foreign stockpiles of inventory. Just one month of trading losses, will hit the Chinese for 8%, of their North American exports. Then they will at least have to ask themselves if the benefits of their arrogance and lawlessness were worth it. START NOW and don’t stop. Send this to everybody you know. Let's show them that we are intelligent Canadians, and NOBODY can take us for granted. If we can't live without cheap Chinese goods for one month out of our lives, WE DESERVE WHAT WE GET! Pass it on, North America !! I DID!! "The greater danger for most of us is not that our aim is too high and we miss it, but that it is too low and we reach it." - Michelangelo -
The wife (Linda) and I have struggled with being overweight for years. About 2 1/2 years ago I dropped about 100 pounds, Linda dropped about 50 pounds and then just plateaued, I on the other hand managed to put about 40 lbs back on. A month ago we started the P90X program, both the exercises and the nutrition plan, at first the nutrition plan was a pain the ass, actually had to cook meals. We're used to it now and it's no longer an inconvenience. The exercise videos,,,holy crap,,they are tough but we've gotten through the first month. So far I've dropped 18 pounds and the wife has lost 12 pounds. Definitely recommend it for someone lookig to lose weight and get healthy, It's not a diet but a change in lifestyle. the company exist for the owners to profit. not to supply jobs. their profits are theirs and not the employees. should not be a factor in someones pay. start your own company and you can set your own pay based on profits. 100% agree. Want to be successful at your job?? It's simple. Show up for work on time. Attendance is measurable and a large majority of companies track it as part of measurable performance reviews. Keep your work area tidy and organized. Excellent customer service comes first and foremost. Most industries if you have customers you have a job. Want to get noticed by your boss so when promotions and advancement opportunities come up and you want on the short list??, simple,,,make your boss look good to his / her bosses. be creative in making suggestions to improve safety, quality, process, reducing waste and cutting costs. 99% of the time the employees running the processes and equipment have the best ideas to improve processes and save the company $$$. Companies need their employees as much as the employees need jobs. Sorry, didn't feel a warning was necessary as there was no blood or graphic body parts content. Yeah I have kids and I was once a kid too. I'm sure the kid on the bike would have found kissing the pavement after being hit by a door from a moving SUV just hilarious There is WAY too many people in this world who have to hurt other people to feel good about themselves. I believe it's called bullying. Treat people the way you want to be treated, if you hurt yourself or kill yourself while trying hurt someone else, then too bad. "If you're gonna be stupid you better be tough" John Wayne. Anyways I apolgise for not putting a content advisory on my previous post. http://www.play-shops.com/ Check out this link. I have had severe anxieties since I was 10 (I'm currently 44) Last fall a fellow skydiver introduced me to SET,,,,In 5 - 2hour sessions he cured what the doctors could not fix in 34 years. he treated each anxiety separately in a 2 hour session,,,,each anxiety literally disappeared as it was treated. My anxiety attacks could last from 1 hour to 25 hours,,,,,drugs did nothing to ease the pain except turn me into a zombie,,,,occasionally I go back for a body / brain tune up using acupuncture and SET,,,I haven't felt this great in years,,,SET is something you might want to consider.
