  8. AggieDave wrote: . Are they only using BMI as the indexing factor? My BMI is 39 (which is well within the "obesity" range) but I am far from obese when viewed from the aspect of bodyfat percentage and health. Then again I like to "pick things up and put them down." (That's 545lbs, I pulled 560lbs after that). BMI is a great tool to assess populations. it is a lousy tool to assess individuals. The best gauge for an individual to gauge their level of obesity or lack of obesity is what you see in the mirror and how good you feel after light to moderate exertion. If you stand in front of the mirror and see a spare tire where there shouldn't be one or you're huffing and puffing after climbing 2 or 3 flights of stairs and need to take a break it's time to re-evaluate your lifestyle. 10. NorrinRadd wrote: . The issue is this is the kind of food people ONLY eat. And they accompany it with very little exercise. And while in moderation it may not kill you, why not simply avoid it, when the healthy alternatives are just as accessible? I'd say a lot of it is education. They have this idea that the fast food is cheap and they have to eat it. It's strange, I know. The large problems with obesity tend to be concentrated (from my observations) in lower income areas. You would think that people without much extra money would be on tight food budgets and therefore on lower calorie diets. The opposite seems to be true. I see a lot of that when I work clinics back in the rural areas of East TN and Western VA. I certainly agree that educating people to make proper food choices is important, we live in an information world with online access to every topic imaginable, it's said information is power, information is not power, action is power, unless people dig deep and act on the information they get from education not much will really change, not only do people need to be educated but they also need to be motivated to make the change. 11. It opens up the door for governmental and insurance funding of obesity treatmentsn from bariatric surgeries to nutritional counseling to.... I wonder if insurance will pay for a personal trainer if I gain 50 pounds? I will maintain that unless one deals with their outstanding emotional issues then treatments for obesity such as they are will be a waste of $$$$ "The greater danger for most of us is not that our aim is too high and we miss it, but that it is too low and we reach it." - Michelangelo
  12. True enough, a friend of mine has a 6 yr old daughter who the doctors recently diagnosed as ADHD and of course their solution was to prescribe meds to "calm" her down, I was talking to her about it and being able to use past experience and research as a model suggested change to her daughter's diet, since then they have eliminated the following items from her diet, sugar and sugar substitutes, red dyed products, red meats that are potentially treated with red dyes for esthetic appeal, processed foods, they have increased the amounts of fresh vegetables and white meats, increased daily intake of water. In 2 weeks the change was so noticeable that her daughter's grandparents and teachers have called her at home wanting to know what drugs / meds the child is on to calm her down so much, it also used to be a struggle to get her to bed by 1030 pm, now 830 or 9 o'clock her daughter tired and ready for bed, there has also been no more incidents at school involving discipline or time outs and her school marks has improved. edited for spelling "The greater danger for most of us is not that our aim is too high and we miss it, but that it is too low and we reach it." - Michelangelo

  15. Here's the story as it appears in the Toronto Sun BOSTON - Eccentric former software pioneer John McAfee is back in the spotlight - lashing out at the anti-virus software that bears his name in a profanity-laced video. McAfee, an American who helped create the anti-virus software industry, generated a media frenzy at the end of last year when he fled his home on a tropical island in Belize, claiming that police in the Central American nation wanted to frame him for murder. He has begun producing a series of YouTube videos, the first of which lampoons the McAfee anti-virus software company that he founded in the late 1980s and that is now owned by Intel Corp . He has not worked for the business in more than 15 years. The video, which surfaced this week, shows him complaining about the difficulties of removing McAfee anti-virus software from computers, and reading what he claims are letters of complaint from those who have used it. He says that the software was beautiful before it fell out of his hands. In the video, McAfee uses a lot of vulgar language, purports to snort a powder and fire a gun into a computer, and is undressed and pawed by a group of young women. He said he did it all to mock the media's unfair portrayal of him as a mad man. "I did the best I could at a paranoid rant," he said in a telephone interview on Wednesday. ATTACK 'LUDICROUS': COMPANY McAfee said he made the video because he really does get harassed by McAfee software customers. "I was tired of seeing references to 'Please hang this man because he has created the worst software in the world,'" he said. Ian Bain, a spokesman for the McAfee software company, declined to say whether the company might pursue legal action. "While we take any attack on our products seriously, these ludicrous statements have no basis in reality," he said. "We continue to focus on what matters: our customers." John McAfee said that he is now living in Portland, Oregon, though he has spent the past few days in Montreal working on a film documentary about his life, which he expects will be released before the end of the year. He said he is also in negotiations with Hollywood studios over a feature film about his life. When he returns to Portland, he plans to get started on his next YouTube video - a satire of The Dr. Phil Show and its host Phil McGraw. Why pick on Dr. Phil? "Dr. Phil has been pounding on my door, pleading me to be on his show. But I am not an idiot," McAfee said. A spokesman for the show said he had no immediate comment. McAfee fled his home in Belize, disguised himself and went into hiding after his American neighbor Gregory Faull was fatally shot in November in the Central American country. He made his way secretly to Guatemala, but was then deported to Miami in December. He said that police in Belize were persecuting him because he refused to pay $2 million in bribes, and that the extortion attempt occurred after armed soldiers shot his dog, smashed up his property and falsely accused him of running a methamphetamine laboratory. Belize police spokesman Raphael Martinez said on Wednesday that McAfee remains a person of interest in the ongoing murder investigation and is wanted for questioning. "Nothing has changed," he said. "He's the only person at this point wanted for questioning." McAfee said in the interview that he has told police in Belize that he would be happy to answer their questions, but only over the telephone, via video conference or in a neutral country outside of Latin America. "They have refused all of those offers," he said clicky http://www.torontosun.com/2013/06/19/john-mcafee-resurfaces-as-ranting-video-star-mocks-mcafee-software "The greater danger for most of us is not that our aim is too high and we miss it, but that it is too low and we reach it." - Michelangelo

  23. here in Canada employment contractors hiring for the feds have in the past posted job notices specifying ethnic qualifications http://blogs.canoe.ca/lilleyspad/general/whites-blacks-and-asians-need-not-apply-federal-government-contractor-seeks-race-based-employees/ I remember back in 1994 when I graduated from college our local police force was hiring, as long as you were physically fit and had a college or university degree they would accept your application,,,,a recruiter told me in private not to waste my time as the hiring was being applied to tits, turbans and tomahawks only as they had employment equity quotas to fill. 24. Might have a positive impact and get them thinking. As long as the people throwing the attitude their way are seasoned jumpers that they respect. Some people won't listen to anyone no matter who they are. The sympathy and empathy skills I referenced in my previous post is in reference more to after the accident has occurred. "The greater danger for most of us is not that our aim is too high and we miss it, but that it is too low and we reach it." - Michelangelo
  25. I agree with you as long as we do not lose our sympathy and empathy skills at the same time, regardless of the cause of an accident (stupidity, ignorance or whatever) the accident victim is / was someone's son, daughter, father, mother etc. Being frustrated and angry etc. at someone else's stupidity or carelessness is normal human emotions but let's not desensitise ourselves at the same time.
