Thanks for pointing that out. When you did TDM's with it, was zooming to the canopy a problem? CS website had said it was non zoom friendly. you can't pay for kids schoolin' with love of skydiving! ~ Airtwardo

stratostar replied to anj4de's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
That was a typo in my post, it should have said, I guess my friend Didn't but it... meaning due to cost. Kurt has been after me to sell him one of mine for a couple years now and when I saw that one I sent him a link, he told me he thought it would sell for a lot... I took that to mean he wasn't going spend a lot to get that... So I don't if he won or not, I didn't see the buyer info. If he did buy it, maybe he'll let me jump it... I sure as hell hope a skydiver got it and not some moron who is going to parasail it. you can't pay for kids schoolin' with love of skydiving! ~ Airtwardo -

maybe when you have some experience under your belt then 51 jumps it might be a good idea, just saying.... But if I was going to do it, I would check out the steps to get into the rear canopy area and how much of a reach it is to the wing from there and do it a few times on the ground with gear on, then in flight, slide the canopy back and climb out being extra careful to not snag any handles or flaps etc. as I climbed out to the wing, lots of hand holds on a cockpit like that with the canopies open, then smile and geek the pilots camera and then dive off the rear in a downward angle, you should no problem missing the tail, but if the pilot is worried about it tell him to kick a little rudder when you leave..... that is how I would do it if I was going to do it. you can't pay for kids schoolin' with love of skydiving! ~ Airtwardo

Jim There are still a few places still using them, yes. Why? well you'll have to ask each one. In the case I was speaking of, for one thing they did no AFF or had any AFF rated people there who would have experience in using HDPC's on students in FF or SL rated people with experience in teaching HDPC progression and they were doing PCA SL's as the progression. When I first showed up there was like 2 guys who wanted to move to throw out for FF students and they were shot down for a number of reasons for a few years I was told. One reason being they did not want to have to switch out PC's and two, the other camp strongly believed that students would start having no pulls if they were given a HD PC. I chalk this up too not having been any where but in the sticks and not having trained anyone in that manner and the fact that the place had been doing it that way for years***, a few were freaking out on the though of teaching a SL student to do PRP's with the PR in the BOC and then on the first FF having a HDPC used. Again the counter answers were students were going to be firing AAD's left and right and it's too dangerous to train like that and we don't want to switch around gear. *** I believe in not fixing what is not broken, however it was broken because they had been having long delays and totals on the FF students, their answer was not to change the deployment system to a modern one, it was to move the loop, a band aid. I went and got one of their brand new HDPC's that had been laying around for years and hooked it up for a PCA SL (works just like a pull out) and made the club prez jump it and took video to prove not only did it work just fine, but there would be no need to change out PC's. Again this was met with how dangerous it is to let a first freefall jumper use a boc mounted HDPC and they will be firing AAD's and or dumping reserves left & right. My answer to that was, how many times does that happen all across the USA at PVA, SDC, Spaceland, the Ranch, Z-hills, Deland, Eloy, you name it any where student gear has throw outs on them and they have done thousands of drops that way. The fact of the matter is this is safe and has been in use for a number of years and we have not seen a major spike in students going in or firing AAD's, have we. The only other rebuff came in the form of a self proclaimed non ticketed rigging expert who started in about how bridals can wrap around and half hitch the tops of the throw outs and cause the PC to not work and you get a PC in tow, because he has seen that happen in base jumping. I guess his wisdom won out because they ended up sending all the HDPC's back to wings so they could sew on some extra bullshit webbing to the PC's that was to keep that from happening..... I'm sure the people @ wings were laughing their ass off at that. Now they are doing/using a HD PCA like I showed the prez. I have not seen the retro fitted PC's, I quit going to that dz because of the backwards thinking politics of a few of the folks running the show when it comes to modernizing into the 21st century of student operations. you can't pay for kids schoolin' with love of skydiving! ~ Airtwardo

Well I have been reading here for sometime about these cams, and the one reason besides price, that I got the cx 100 was the card location and the internal memory. My thinking is the cards is the main media and the internal is the reserve tank. you can't pay for kids schoolin' with love of skydiving! ~ Airtwardo

Thanks for the replies, DSE. Having not seen any of the new HD lens, is there a .5 brand I should be looking? I'm not looking to spend a shit load of money, not planing on doing a lot of jumping with it over all. Mostly for home movies and a jump now and then. All the photos I have seen on here of other peoples set ups, in fact those wides look really big. You said in a later post a .2 xxx or what ever, I hate distorted or massive curve look to my project, is there any worry with that on any XYZ lens??? Edited to add ,just after I posted this I did a Google search for .5 hd video lens, the first hit was your vasst review of century optics, so guess that might be your choice for a .5, little pricy for now, I might hold off for a bit. I also was reading chutingstar's site, looking at the waycool .5 it said not good at zooming, just wondering is that a common issue these days? I never had any issues before, that lens was ripped off though and was a SD lens, like the waycool. you can't pay for kids schoolin' with love of skydiving! ~ Airtwardo

Hey gang I got a cx 100 and it's a whole new world for me now having been in the tape based media world for so long. This didn't have a pro duo card with it, so I'm wondering what size card should I be looking at getting? How fast will a card fill up with media files? Is 8 gig enough? Also dose it matter if not using a Sony brand card? What has every ones experience been with cards? Also I know a lot of you are using wide angles lens, what size is the threads on the cx 100? 30mm or 37? Looks like 37 to me. I have not had time to research that, maybe one of you could save me some time. I used to use a Sony .7 lens and liked it a lot, but have no experience with HD wides. Is anyone using a .7 Sony hd lens? Good? Bad? I like .7 for TDMs in the past is there a reason I should be thinking another size for this camera model? Well all I can say is it's a wings with a spring loaded pilot chute and that set up sucks ass! Another dz I know of kept having the same issues (at times they totaled) if the closing loop was too long, and so they had to keep the loops super short making it near impossible to close the rigs. Students really had issues closing them. The loops were changed to be moved from the tray location to the bottom flap and they still had that issue if the loop was too long, it was solved by changing out to throw outs. If I was going to order student rigs today with spring loaded PC in a Wings rigs it wouldn't be a choice because they suck like that. Then again I wouldn't be ordering spring loaded pc's. you can't pay for kids schoolin' with love of skydiving! ~ Airtwardo

Page 36 bullet two says: To the best of my understanding the answer your seeking is on page 29, it states: So all that it says (page 26 bullet 2) is, it is not a violation of grant assurance 22 economic discrimination. The rest of it spells it out as to how and why the FAA sided with Skydive Sacramento & skydiving. you can't pay for kids schoolin' with love of skydiving! ~ Airtwardo -

I hear, you I can only speak of news stories and any info from people like you who Urban or another local. And I can understand a lot of the past cases due in thanks to the ongoing education from USPA's Mr. Ottinger. or those in the FAA I have personally had contact with in regards to my own part 13 case. That is what I base my comments on, I don't always get it right, but do my best to keep it factual. And as you know dealing with the politics or FAA can make your head hurt. Standard disclaimer: (I'm not speaking for USPA, the FAA or any other person in the industry, I'm posting my own personal thoughts on the matter. I could be wrong, get your own facts, no one appointed me the guru of airport access issues!) you can't pay for kids schoolin' with love of skydiving! ~ Airtwardo -
While I would agree to a degree with your edit IMHO we need to take it a few steps backs to the front door. Not every person on the planet needs to or should be making a tandem skydive, from extremely overweight land whales, The disabled, the very old, kids etc. Just because you let the PAX H out to the stops and stuff them into it don't mean it's a good idea to go for it. Sometimes being a professional means saying no! But often greed wins out and up they go. How much did the unprofessional actions of a TM, GM, DZO, S&TA in Ohio cost Strong? At least a million if not more. you can't pay for kids schoolin' with love of skydiving! ~ Airtwardo

Reading all that bullshit will make your head hurt. All that really matters is what page 36 says in directors determ. I'm not an expert on saying what the FAA has to say, if your not clear on what the 36 pages really say, you could try asking the FAA or Randy Ottinger because he can help you to understand it way better then I can, just remember Randy is busy keeping us in the air and the FAA on our side, so please don't waste his time on trivial matters. No, that is in effect what the airport sponsor tried to do and what others have done in the past. fact 1. Been going on for 8 years. 2. two dz's were on the airport, one closed when this started. 3. the city only started this closing the airport crap when the lawyer they hired told them it was a choice, and it would cost a 100K to fight the part 16 Mr. Moore filed. 4. FAA ruled skydivers could safely land on the airport, city hired more then one consultant to say other wise and has refused to comply with the FAA's findings. 5. A part 13 informal complaint is open ended and can drag on for years, there is no time frame for the FAA to act, however in a part 16 there is a required time frame the FAA has to take action. http://www.faa.gov/airports/airport_compliance/complaints/ In short there is no mall waiting in the wings. you can't pay for kids schoolin' with love of skydiving! ~ Airtwardo -

Nice PA BTW, read the forum rules much? I didn't think so. What the fuck are you talking about? Let me guess you got some problem with post 2 or 23 of this thread? Just what advice have I given here in this thread that has your panties all bunched in a wad and up your crack? I have a lifetime of experience in the sport, about 40 years worth now and 29 of those jumping and or working @ 45 dz's in 17 states, how about you? you can't pay for kids schoolin' with love of skydiving! ~ Airtwardo

The funny thing is that same mayor has done a jump there and landed in the field he is trying so hard to refuse the dz to now use because they (city) say there is no room on airport property to use... Check out Google earth of that airport and see if there is not room. Also in that interview, he goes on to talk about the DZ not getting insurance for the city in case of a skydiving accident... I guess he and the bright minds at the city have not done any research of late to learn about the latest part 16 in CA that was all about insurance. you can't pay for kids schoolin' with love of skydiving! ~ Airtwardo
