if you're doing it in winter, check out some rail packages. probably the best way to see the mountains in winter if you aren't skiing on them. it's not like the roads are impassable all winter, just very unpredictable. check out via rail, our national rail line, such as it is. i'm a canuck, and i've lived in alberta, southern ontario and the maritimes. i hate it when people call ontario 'eastern canada'. there's about a third of the country to the east of ontario! from the buffalo border crossing to my doorstep it's about 1100 miles or so, and there's more canada to the east of me. that said, (rant over), don't do it in december. cold, nasty, snowy. if you like skiing, stop in the rockies and ski until spring. then come east. last summer i did the drive up the icefields parkway. it's a highway that runs from banff to jasper through the mountains. amazing scenery, and you can stop and wander around on a glacier. worth the trip, but once again, in december the whole place seems like a glacier. i caught that one day last week wehn i was home sick. it's not near as good as it was back in the day with richard dawson as host. then there was that other guy that committed suicide (ray coombs?), then al from home improvement (richard karne i think), then i saw it's the guy that played elaine's boss on seinfeld. i think that buy the time you get to host that, your career is pretty much done. you'll have to check the specifics of the gear you want to be sure. at 230, you would be 260 or so out the door and that is getting towards the limits for some sport gear. i think my velocity has a max weight rating of 255 or so, not sure about my canopies. some bigger guys have gone to modified tandem rigs, if you do a search here you'll find a few threads on the subject. on my first visit to sdc i was met in the parking lot by the S&TA. she asked where i was from, had i been there before, what discipline i was interested in and what my experience was. i was directd to a load organizer who took me under his wing and took me on several fun jumps, until i chickened out. it's easy to get lost in the crowd at a dz this size, especially when you are travelling alone and don't know anyone. this wasn't the case here, i can't reccomend the place highly enough. i'd be a regular jumper here if the commute wasn't so long.
