  1. there is speculation that a reserve hosreshoe caused a tandem fatality in new jersey recently. other than that, an unstable reserve deployment could launch the pilot chute in such a way that it could entangle with a jumper or his/her gear. just my 200 jump wonder opinion. ymmv. 3. i'm with you... i wonder if it is possible to get them retrofit, and if so, what it would cost... "Hang on a sec, the young'uns are throwin' beer cans at a golf cart." MB4252 TDS699 killing threads since 2001
  4. yup, keeps me from losing my ray-bans. i don't have the gatorz yet because i thought they were just a fashion trend. then i tried a pair on, and can't wait to get some. the glasses don't seem to inclined to move anyway, due to the close fit to your face, but the strap is cheap insurance for $100+ glasses. 5. we have a person at our dz that wears contacts/gatorz with no problems. as far as style goes, it pretty much depends on personal preference and the size and shape of your pumpkin. there are some at the dz with demora's (?) but they wouldn't work on my big melon, so i'd be looking at converters or transformers instead. 7. to counter this 'lack of action' comment, here's my story. i ordered a new infinity a couple of years ago. there were no gear dealers around to do the measurements for me, so my wife and i had at it with the guide on the vse website. the rig showed up as promised, and i loved it. then i saw a picture of myself under canopy, with the chest strap nearly at my throat. i put the rig on and sent a few pictures back to tress at vsea so see if the fit was right. it wasn't. i screwed up the measurements. i picked the point at the top of my hip instead of the hip joint, so my main lift webs were too long. i had a non-jumping vacation coming up, so i sent the rig back. the harness was resized, free of charge, even though it was my fault. can't ask for better service or a better product, imho, and i wouldn't hesitate to order another one. Shoes

i used to wear whatever sneakers i had, but i started wearing chucks' high tops. before i got my rw suit (with booties), i was always worried about losing a shoe in freefall. had a couple of close calls, but if i had tied them tighter and knotted the laces i would have been okay. the chucks' also have a flat sole and slide pretty good. 10. i always thought the hornet was pisa's 'version' of the sabre, in other words, a non-elliptical canopy. it is a sport canopy, but not a high performance canopy, at an appropriate wing-loading!. pisa's high perfromance canopy was the heatwave. 11. the usual cause is twisted brake lines. the remedy is to check the brake lines from the canopy down, pushing any twists down to the toggles. i usually do it once a weekend, but for me that's only about 5 or 6 jumps. your mileage may vary. 12. there's on at my dz, they guy who flys it was a long time sabre owner who got it on a trial basis and bought one because he like dit, and the price was right. can't help you out as to whether or not that's a good deal (imho, it sounds good), but apparently it is a nice-flying wing. 16. In 1986, Mkele Mbembe was on holiday in Kenya after graduating from college. On a hike through the bush, he came across a young bull elephant standing with one leg raised in the air. The elephant seemed distressed so Mbembe approached it very carefully. He got down on one knee and inspected the elephant's foot, and found a large thorn deeply embedded in it. As carefully and as gently as he could, Mbembe worked the thorn out with his hunting knife, after which the elephant gingerly put down its foot. The elephant turned to face the man and with a rather stern look on its face, stared at him. For several tense moments Mbembe stood frozen, thinking of nothing else but being trampled. Eventually the elephant trumpeted loudly, turned and walked away. Mbembe never forgot that elephant or the events of that day. Twenty years later he was walking through a zoo with his teenage son. As they approached the elephant enclosure, one of the creatures turned and walked over to near where Mbembe and his son Tapu were standing. The large bull elephant stared at Mbembe and lifted its front foot off the ground, then put it down. The elephant did that several times then trumpeted loudly, all the while staring at the man. Remembering the encounter in 1986, Mbembe couldn't help wondering if this was the same elephant. Mbembe summoned up his courage, climbed over the railing and made his way into the enclosure. He walked right up to the elephant and stared back in wonder. Suddenly the elephant trumpeted again, wrapped its trunk around one of the man's legs and swung him wildly back and forth along the railing, killing him. Probably wasn't the same elephant. 17. in my own humble 150 jump wonder experience, i think that pd is erring on the side of caution with their recomendations. my first rig had a sabre 190 in it, and i (and instructors) had no problems with me jumping it. after the fact, i looked at pd's chart and they didn't even recommend it for an advanced person with my 225 exit weight, even though i was well within the max loading for the canopy. i can see where they're coming from from a safety/liability standpoint, but almost everyone exceeds the numbers in that chart. this is my own experience, your mileage may vary, check with your instructors, etc, etc. "Hang on a sec, the young'uns are throwin' beer cans at a golf cart." 18. i thought that a tension knot was the result of a twisted line. a steering line can become twisted when the toggle is released either on landing or at some point during the canopy flight. this is the reason that i run my lines every 5 or 10 jumps from the canopy to the toggles. i would think that the only way any other line could get a tension know would be if it was twisted when attaching the canopy to the risers. ...or am i completely off base? 20. i guess my point is, when do you assume the item was lost in transit, and take some steps to recover it? "Hang on a sec, the young'uns are throwin' beer cans at a golf cart." MB4252 TDS699 killing threads since 2001
  21. no tracking number (that i was given anyway), shipper is usps. they said they talked to customs and were told things were backed up. i can see a back up for a week or two, not a month or two. i have received no notice from customs or the post office that they have it, or that there is duty to pay (there shouldn't be) or anything. 22. i'm wondering what to do.... i sent a piece of gear back to it's manufacturer for service, at some point back in early april. may 2, my credit card is billed for the work and return shipping. this total was about half the cost of the item, a bit surprising, but serves me right for not asking for a quote before the work was done. it's now the end of june, and i still don't have my gear back! i've been in contact with the manufacturer on several occasions and their response has been, 'we shipped it, it's probably held up in customs, let us know if it arrives.' would you consider this a valid reason, or should i raise shit and ask for a replacement item? to me, 2 months is more than enough time. we're talking under $200 (USD) , just to keep it vague but in perspective. i don't want to name the manufacturer, yet. 25. well, yeah, there's always the 'shit happens' factor to work in. i think it's safe to say that most jumpers don't have a new vector with skyhook now, so why buy a vector just for the skyhook if you find a different rig more to your liking? not knocking the vector at all, the main reason i have an infinity is because i won a half off coupon at a boogie. i have absolutely zero complaints about the infinity, as it was on my short list for a new container anyway, and i will set it up with a skyhook when it becomes available.
