  1. Aw c'mon Remster, you know that the truly good whisky doesn't have an 'E' in it. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. Thomas Jefferson
  2. "But the downside is these damn things are pricey!$$$ " The lifecycle cost of ownership is less than the original Cypres though, right? I haven't done the math yet, I wish someone would. If the cost of ownership has increased, then I'm going to be mighty pissed with Airtec and will consider buying a competitor's model just out of spite. If however the cost of ownership has come down, I'll continue with my current brand loyalty.
  3. Jose, I reckon you are looking for this stuff http://2kcomposites.com/home.html These are the 2K composites helmets that everyone seems to be talking about, and they ARE NOICE! They are indeed a UK company. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 4. "they made me swap things around between bags because one was 58 lbs. What a joke. " Calm down, calm down everybody..... My guess is this limit is concerned with protecting baggage handlers. We have had a 20kg (about 45 lbs) baggage weight limit on our offshore chopper flights for a couple of years. This to save the loaders from busting their backs trying to lift heavy bags. Back injury and lifting strains being a major element of industrial injuries. If I stuffed my back up lifting an awkward suitcase at work, I would probably expect some compensation (or at least paid leave) from my employers. Who pays for this beano? You and I, via our ticket prices. And remember, once your back is stuffed, its stuffed for good, so its an easy industrial claim to make. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 5. Derek William Dick, better known as Fish. A fine Scottish troubador, the official website is here.... http://www.the-company.com For more info go to google, type in Fish Marillion. He lives just outside Edinburgh, and has just / is about to release another solo album. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 7. "My two-bits is that a responsible person on your DZ should make the call, based on your temperment and skills, and it seems like they have." This seems to me to be probably the most sensible approach I have ever seen.
  8. There are two 'older' types, the first has no slots and is difficult to mount without a pouch, they are about 1 1/2 times as thick as a protrac/dytter. the second type has a slot at each end of the 'box' so it can take zip ties etc. With a little work they can be mounted anywhere a dytter will go, but they are a little larger. As for big and bulky, I wouldn't say that, they are 'thicker' than a protrack though, they fit inside a protec and most frapp hats, and can fit the fabric/flexible type pockets. You may have issues fitting them in some hard "pockets" but nothing a little 'grinder love' can't resolve.. Modern Timouts are much more compact and will fit anywhere a protrac/dytter will go . -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 9. "Can anyone tell me a little about these old style dyters." They work just fine. "Do they only have only one alarm and can you set this?" Yes one user defined alarm, turn it anti clockwise till it beeps (calibrates to zero), then turn it clockwise for every 1000 ft, you pass one pimple on the body, so you can set it for just about any height you wish to choose. There is no 'flatline'. "Are they worth say 50 bucks or so?" Absolutely, I'd say 50 bucks represents reasonable value for money. "Will they fit into todays standard audibly pockets (although I will be atachign mine to a pro-tec for the time being)? " They are about the same size as a prodytter/protrac, they will fit quite nicely inside a protec (I suspect Madds and Nills had this in mind when they designed it). They have thread holes in the body, so for extra security, pass a piece of break tie or fishing line through one of the holes to make a 'leash'and tie the wee thing to the ear hole 'bars' on the protec. This means you can set the thing etc, and not have to worry about losing it. "Thanks for any opinios on the older style dyters." Your welcome. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 10. I'm guessing that if skydiving gets Olympic status, and I sincerely hope it does, the chances are that live judging via air to ground transmission would be deployed for everything except the canopy disciplines (swooping and accuracy). Lori hit the nail on the head, the only people who can conduct this 'cheating' are the camera fliers, so if WE keep it clean, life will be simple. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 21. "Maybe there's some detectable fingerprint on the signal itself that would indicate tampering." There is, but it would require the camera clocks to be synched to 'real time' and someone would have to log the teams, and their exit orders, etc. accurate to plus or minus a minute. All minidv cameras, in common usage, time code the footage with a date time etc, the same thing happens when the camera records rendered footage. The longer the time gap between the original recording and the doctored recording, the more obvious this time shifting would be to the trained eye. Far easier to have a proficient video controller/dub mechanism to prevent this. If one dubbing station is too slow, get two, three etc. Even with a laptop ready to rock, and running a real time set up (don't know if one exists yet for laptops), it would take a minimum of 2 minutes to hose in 1 minute of video, then playback to the cam the 50 seconds fiddled footage. Without a real time set up, the pooter time would probably be around the 3 minute mark at best. I'm guessing 5 minutes might be a possible/realistic turn round time. I'm also guessing if you were caught doing this, then all bets would be off, the cam flier and the team members would probably recieve some sort of ban. Would that risk be worth it for the teams that might benefit from a 10% enhancement to achieve a top slot? I'm guessing no. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 22. If the source video is minidv, via firewire, then why not send the back up to your camera. The quality is better. Recapture quailty will be better. Recapturing is easier in the event of loss of master. It will be faster...no rendering. It is more reliable. You can store more footage per buck. You can probably store all your master source video on one tape, depending on your edit software, you can also save an edit decision list, and trimmed clips, if you want to get really geeky. Its just all round more convenient. Its the way I do it!.
  23. At 7s/l jumps, you still have another 20-30 jumps on student gear. Your DZ will probably include the cost of alti hire in your jumps, students bad news gear a lot more, you will drop altis, scuff up containers etc. So why not grow out of the dropsies and stoofs on somebody elses equipment. You are being charged for it anyway. An electronic logger is not really as useful as it sounds at this stage, you still need to maintain paper logs with instructor's signatures, and its not as if you are doing so many jumps per day that you can't keep track of them. An audible is always useful, but discuss their use with your instructors, you shouldn't need one till you are off student status. At this time you will need your money for coach jumps, gear, more jump tix, celebration beer, trips abroad, etc. By all means buy one if you must satisfy gear lust, but the cash could be put to better use at this stage in your development. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 25. You can get 'decal paper' (google shows a few outlets and outfits), but I don't know how durable they would be. I'm no expert so try some of the sites with Q&A areas. They are water slide decals, but can be done on most inkjet printers, then varnished. Good luck! -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me.
