Cross country drive 2-4 Nov...what dz's can I visit?
Miami replied to Miami's topic in Events & Places to Jump
Since I'm moving across the country (back to the east coast) I thought it would be a good time to visit some dz's along the way. I'll be driving from Colorado Springs, CO to the Norfolk, VA area. I'm taking I-70 to St Louis then I-64 to Richmond, VA. It'll be a Wed-Fri drive (2nd-4th of Nov)...if you think your dz might be open and it is close to those interstates let me know...I'd like to get a couple jumps in along the way! Miami -
If you've been thinking about getting a 20D...
Miami replied to Miami's topic in Photography and Video
Actually, you can't. Wolf camera has the 20D with the 17-85mm USM IS lens for $1999 ($1899 with the rebate)...the link I provided has that exact setup for over $500 less. Miami -

There is a reputable seller on eBay selling them for $1375 (thanks to a $100 rebate from Canon)...and that is with a high dollar (17-85 USM IS) lens. I ordered the exact same setup from him a month ago and he is legit. Just thought I would throw that out there is case anyone was interested... Miami -
Intentional Cutaway Desired - Raven Micro 150 Concerns
Miami replied to mdrejhon's topic in Safety and Training
Obviously you know what the best option is. If you are looking at other options just take your reserve and jump it as a main, open up nice and high and play with the flare...if it feels like it's stalling at an unsafe point chop it and ride in the real reserve. On another note, I have ridden a micro raven 120-mz loaded at 1.9:1, landed it at 5500ft MSL and had a nice tip toe landing with a full flare stroke. I'm a big fan of not relying solely on the opinion of someone else when deciding on my gear...I like to try everything for myself and make my own decisions. Hope this helps... Miami -
Seems like you're reading into it a bit much...I mean personally I wouldn't necessarily consider providing confidence to a students parents a "responsibility" per se, but thats where differences in AFF instructors opinions lie. And it's not what are the responsibilities as listed in the SIM or in the AFFCD's guide or anything else like that, it's what do you think they are. This one has kind of piqued my curiosity, I'd really like to see some other responses... Miami

Hopefully some more people will respond to your post... I'm not very familiar with the lenses from cookie or royal, but I have a few lens from way cool. I'm pretty sure I have read somewhere that they are all basically the same, just different labels for the different companies selling them. I went with way cool because they were the only ones at the time selling a uv filter with their lenses, and with it being as much as it is I liked the idea of having some protection for my glass. Cookie is selling a uv filter for their lenses now also, but I have not seen those in person so I can't comment on them, but I do like the simplicity of the slip on uv filter for the way cool lenses. In all I'm happy with the lenses from way cool. Try doing a search also, there should be some previous post about these lenses, and hopefully someone who has some experience with the other brands will respond also. You're going to like how the 109 with a low pro lens is going to fit in your FF2...like a glove! Miami

Don't know why not, it's not a hard question...just asking for an opinion... Miami

Provide ground and in flight training to student jumpers and act as a safety to those students who cannot correct or save themselves...thats a bit brief but I think that puts it in a nutshell pretty well. If I thought about it for a while I could probably give a better answer... Safely introduce new jumpers into the sport. Give up the rating? I'm probably not qualified to answer this one, never had the rating and never will. Jump with and observe jumpers in that grey area from graduation of AFF to the A license (and beyond) and provide them with instruction after the jump. Provide minimal, if any, instruction during freefall. Miami

Everyone should just get a racer then they don't have to worry about it. Miami

The only other mod I know of (that they made us do as well) is a bungie on the yoke. Miami

You never know...they can act funny sometimes. Miami

Very interesting...learn something new every day. Miami

You got it...pretty interesting that they are on a jump plane! They install them for increased rudder control while on water. Miami

Anyone seen these on an otter before? Bonus points if you know why they are "normally" installed. Miami

Should an AFFI lose their rating if they 'drop' a student?
Miami replied to Hooknswoop's topic in Instructors
It is the AFF instructors responsibility to know their range and to dress themselves and their student for success...trust me, a student is not "trying" to get away from their instructor, if it happens it is almost always the instructor's lack of preparation. I think it might be a combination of dumb luck and proper preparation, which includes knowing when to decline jumping with a particularly sized student, that I have never found myself in this situation during my 2000+ AFFI jumps. No, AFFI's are hopefully doing their best but perfection should be expected of no one. Now if they do it on a regular basis or cannot fly their slot on a non-problematic student... Miami -
Favorite one-liners or routine for tandem interviews.

vidiot: Are you nervous? vidiot: You should be, your about to trust your life to 20 pounds of nylon! The best responses are the ones who actually think about that afterward. Miami -
I would rather not have a problem to begin with. My point was that having a floating pud is much more likely than a pc in tow. Miami
-
Well I'll be damned...all those years ago that you flew for my first jumps and you very well may end up flying my last jumps. I'm looking to retire in Austin when I finish my military career (granted thats still 8 years away), so I'll most likely finish jumping out there as well! Talk about full circle... Miami

A pc in tow is an actual malfunction, i.e. something was packed incorrectly for it to happen. A floating pud can happen even if everything is packed correctly, but it gets nudged out in the plane or during freefall. Much more likely (but still rare) to have a floating pud. edit to add: I agree with you about rather having a floating pud to a pc in tow though...much rather have less back there to dump a reserve into if at all possible. And a floating pud won't suddenly deploy as your reserve is deploying. Miami

Lazy throw. I usually look over my right shoulder as I pitch to watch the pc launch, then bring my head back to level before opening shock starts. This particular occasion my pc decided to come give me a kiss and while it was there it made a great little half hitch around the ring sight. I was very fortunate I had pulled not too long after the tandem...I screwed with it for 1K' and got it off at 3K'...another couple of seconds and I would have dumped my reserve and had to hope it cleared the horseshoe. Yep...I had similer questions when I found my .3 and .42 to be exactly the same as far as field of view. Here is that post...it kinda frustrating isn't it? Miami
