  1. It seems the entitlement mentality is no longer exclusive to the lower class. Now, all socio-economic groups have their share of - "I want mine. It's my right. Make the rich pay for my free ride".
  2. I think one of the points in the OP was that this story is not garnering attention. Has it made national news? From my brief research, it looks like all the coverage is local, including an AP report by a local. This seems to be part of a pattern on under-reporting vicious crimes when the assailant is a member of an "oppressed group" and the victims are part of the "power structure". Do a little digging and you'll find a boatload of vicious crimes upon white victims that never get anything more than local coverage.
  3. Taking care of those in immediate need of care has always been a part of our culture. Admitting a car wreck victim to the ER is a far cry from healthcare for all... free for many. Additionally, a given hospital's choice to admit someone in need is a far cry from mandatory care for all. Using the exception to rationalize what you think should be the norm is just a way of avoiding my previous question. Healthcare is not a right.
  4. Valid, however is there any evidence out there to suggest that this exact scenario wouldnt have played out the same way with hispanic, asian , or even black occupants of that carjacked vehicle? Is there any testimony or indication from the perpetrators of this horrific crime that they targeted the white couple based on race? If not then this act really cant be described as a Hate Crime, which is defined by being motivated to commit a crime on the basis of race. If anyone was sick enough to commit crimes as heinous as those delineated in the article then my guess is that it didnt matter what the race was of the cars occupants. Chances are if the couple was hispanic or even black those monsters probably still would have done the same thing. Is it a Hate Filled Crime? certainly, but an actual "Hate Crime", in my opinion no. You seem intent on not having this crime labelled a "hate crime". Why?
  5. Please tell us when healthcare became a right of every American (whether we pay for it or not).
  6. Lucky, My point was that this type of set up would benefit more than just an obscure portion of the middle and lower classes, which is what you seemed to be saying. It would basically treat everyone the same. Zippo, Check the stats. Slightly more than half of private sector employees get health benefits.
  7. A little more than half of all workers in the private sector receive healthcare benefits. The rest either pay for it themselves (at a rate typically much higher that corporations are charged), go without or get what they can through the government.. http://data.bls.gov/cgi-bin/surveymost
  8. Is this more or less ominous than... Global Warming? Hubbert's Peak? The federal debt? The trade deficit? The weakening dollar? The healthcare crisis? The future of Social Security? Washington's culture of corruption? The meth epidemic? The AIDS epidemic? Ultra-Fundie Christians controlling the White House? Internet predators? Low ratings for last night's Oscars? Britney's mental health? Some times I don't know how I can face a new day.
  9. And the othe half of psychologists who will charge $150.00/hr., to enlighten you about the myriad of unresolved issues you never realized you had.
  10. I'm afraid I don't know anything about either the history or etymology of Zirconium. Or about some strongly held notions regarding the "history" of Alexander the Great.
  11. It would be interesting to see how engineers would deal with all of our federal social programs. "Everybody works!"
  12. It seems like some view the world in absolute black and white terms, with no interest in observing shades of gray. Bummer.
  13. I did a news search for "Channon Christian", the female victim in this story and couldn't find any national coverage on this. What's the link for that AP story? The victims were tortured and abused for days. Do you really think this is a run of the mill homicide? How is this less newsworthy than the killing of James Byrd or Matthew Shepard? Unless they offend PC sensitivities.
  14. It is interesting to see how blatantly racist statements against conservatives or by supposed liberals get downplayed. House slave? Brown Sugar? Referring to the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists as the “Nigger” labor organization? A US Sentator uses the same N-word on national TV, in 2001? No double standard here folks. Move along. No. Really. Who says it is what matters.
  15. This kind of thinking comes across as being extremely naive.
  16. Or is it? The rabbit thickens... A credible, clear, concise rebuttal in just eight minutes. And then there is that fiction... er.. um.. I mean history about Al and Z
  17. Is it the same lab that accused Lance of doping six years after the fact? Here's news nugget I found amusing:
  18. The killing rate for illegals is three times greater than that for the rest of the population. By your rationale we shouldn't be that concerned about AIDS, considering it accounts for less than 1% of all deaths in the US.
  19. So the bear asks the rabbit if he has trouble with shit sticking to his fur...
  20. IMO this is excellent news. Although his historic ride was pretty miraculous, he always seemed like a Dudley Dooright kind of person. I'm glad the findings are working to vindicate him.
  21. I can see how this could be viewed as flawed or short-sighted logic, but morally bankrupt? You crack me up.
  22. As are yours. He is trained to deal with violent situations...You are not. This is a violent situation, he knows more about them and has trained them more than you. How is a cop coming to someone's house (original statement was "You see police officers approaching your house.. ") a "violent situation"? If a cop came to my house I wouldn't consider it a "violent situation", nor would I feel the need to greet him with my hands up. If a cop came to your house, would your first thought be "This is a violent situation, I'd better put my hands up"? Kallend, He's already clarified that he "was gearing that statement more towards this particular situation." It's been reported that the homeowner, who lived out in the country, heard a loud bang and screeching outside. It was 8:30 at night. While "violent situation" is a bit of an overstatement, This situation was definitely more inflamed than seeing a cop strolling up to your front door in the daytime. It's about context.
