  1. QuoteI think the "jump wonder" term has more to do with attitude than with actual jump numbers. Exactly, it's all about attitude. When informative lips move, listen. When you think you have all the answers and refuse to listen, it makes us wonder when you'll die from it!
  2. Hi Sam, I didn't, just forwarded an email from a friend. So far no one I have told this to personally, had heard of it before so we're not alone!
  3. QuoteI find it interesting that you are not aware of this law. It has been on the national news as well as on the local news. In fact, I was getting rather tired of hearing about it. I don't disagree with the logic of it and to my ignorance I don't see the news a lot. I have always given a lane of respect to anyone pulled off the road, not just police but was totally unaware of the requirement to slow down was a law! And as it was used here as a speed trap, go figure!
  4. This just forwarded from a friend; All, > > >Let my misfortune be a lesson for you. This is a long story, but a must >read. This really happened to me yesterday (12/10/03). > > > >Yesterday, I was driving into town along the Southwest Freeway around 12:30 >PM. I was in the far left lane doing the posted speed limit of 65 and going >with the flow of traffic. When I got over the Bissonnett/Braeswood >overpass, there was an HPD squad car parked on the left shoulder with the >officer standing out in front of his vehicle pointing his radar gun at >oncoming cars. Just as I was >approaching him, he pointed his radar gun at me and signaled for me to pull >over. I was shocked, because I know that I was going the posted speed limit >(60) as I immediately looked at my speedometer. > > > >The officer came to my window and said "do you know how fast you were >going?" I said yes, I was going 60. He said "you were doing 58" and he >showed me his radar gun, which read 58. I said okay. He said "you failed >to slow your speed down by 20 MPH or move over to the adjacent lane when an >emergency vehicle was stopped in the flow of traffic." I said, I did not >know that was a law (of course that is never a defense) and he said it was >and asked for my license. 5. I see all these topics about how students and younger jumpers... - NEW Quote | Reply -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I see all these topics about how students and younger jumpers...can get offended or even mad at their instructors for various advice, especially the type that holds them back from something they wanna do(downsize, high performance landings, what have you...)I was just reading a topic on another forum on this site where an instructor was complaining about studentS who wouldn't listen to his advice, make a low hook turn or something similar, and regret not paying more heed. Unfortuanately last year we had one of these turn fatal. 100-200 jump wonder could stand up his current Sabre 150 much more than 50% of the time and decided to jump a smaller Stilletto,135/120 (not sure) and had asked for advice on hook turns. The S&TA and others had told him not to attempt hp landings until he could master basic landings. He did the classic "hey watch this, the hook from hell". 180 degree hook to double fronts to impact from just over hangar high. Unfortunately, he was too good to listen and it cost him his life. Sad.
  6. I did my first AFF Oct.'98. Did 3 more AFF's and gave up for almost 2 yrs. Came back about 3 yrs ago and over 1600+ jumps late, I'll be 45 and the end of the month. I'm still a newbie to say. Two years of 4 way, Airspeed tunnel, 2 records and many record attempts, still the reborn passion of my life. Just really sorry that I wasted a lot of years pursuing golf instead of continuing or having started younger but I went as soon as I was introduced to the sport.
  7. personally, if there is anything left in serviceable condition - take it and burn the rest. Agreed and spread my ashes to the heavens so I will always be at the DZ..........
  8. Yea, I know of one in TX that tandems at 16, not sure of AFF though.
  9. As I stated in an earlier post I was not the one with the attitude which my witness can attest to. The individual trying to do check in was an un-informed individual and talking out of their ASS. If someone is talking out of their ass, see below In which case, why argue with someone who obviously has less knowledge than yourself of requirements. The USPA says jumpers should keep a log of all their jumps, not must. Showing the logbook is not the issue. Do not Quote the U.S.P.A. incorrectly as this individual did. Previously hadn't quoted anyone. If Perris requies a signature then fine. This person also mis-quoted by stating that the individual signing the logbook had to be on the jump. N/A no signiture required except for awards and such and only to verify for USPA jump#'s and freefall time and an S&TA can verify from what source you give them. It seems as though you travel to do records a bit though and your face might be more well known on the west coast whereas mine is not. Presecond time to jump on west coast so that was not the case, and my face isn't even my avatar.
  10. Hi John, Sorry I didn't meet you at POPs. My experience with not having even kept a log book in over 1000 jumps was to fill out a blank copy of a log book page when I signed the waivers at the world record attempts. As for Kramer, I think maybe laughing about it and asking for a dzm may have satisfied them. Sometimes attitude begets attitude. The people there were extremely polite and helpful with me but then it may have had to do with my attitude.
  11. I don't see how that could be possible and still have the door function. My bad, that holds the door shut? Didn't jump the van at POPs world
  12. Paul, Seems to me that they could put some kind of rubber boot on that to cover the open hook.
  13. I probably had 350 jumps before jumping with a tandem. I had a lot of r/w experience with the TM and all those jumps in well less than a year so very, very current. Standard rule at the dz are 500 jumps and/or approval of the TM. If I were you, I wouldn't ask unless you want to lurk from a long way away!
  14. I don't know if you jump for a living but a friend at my dz was totally burned on shooting video for a living and not being able to afford to fun jump. She won a raffle for 1 full day of jumps and found the spark again. Went and got a regular paying job so that she can come back and "fun" jump. She remembered why she enjoyed low pressure jumping!
  15. I can see where the staff shit could be pretty ugly/depressing and also jumping at a dz that's just not fun ie. Jumper skills are low and the jumps never turn out good. Been visiting a couple of different dz's lately where the skills are nowhere near the skills of the(many) jumpers at my home dz and it kinda takes the wind out of my sails, not wanting to get on every load I can. I'm kind of spoiled jumping with some world class jumpers/organizers at my home dz. Now, when the jumpers are not around, I wait for some quality jumps over quantity.
  16. come/cum then why is came/came?
  17. I actually hadn't dated much since coming back to sport. Now I'm dating a long time jumper from another city in Texas. Typically she comes to Houston and we jump my dz on Saturday and jump another dz thats closer to her home to shorten the drive back for her on Sundays. If I go see her, the local dz is closer to Houston than where she lives for me and for now they too have an Otter so it's all good! As much time as I spend at the dz on weekends, I don't think there are many WUFFO's out there that would appreciate the "weekend days off" relationship! Unless they were ok hangin' at the dz. Since we started dating after the POP's world record attempts at Perris this year she has decided to join the fun of the Texas State Record 150-way this year!
  18. If there's a plane flying,GO JUMP! Fu@k the cold!
  19. Post who it is and see if anyone knows them or would vouch for them. Find out if their dz will vouch for them, I know mine would for me.
  20. Typically a "snap hook" turn is done with an aggressive yank on a front riser to execute an immediate change of direction of 90 degrees or more to build speed for a swoop landing. A carving turn is done less aggressively taking several seconds to accomplish the same thing with much more precision. Both can be deadly if done too low to recover to level flight before impact with Mother Earth. NOT to be done by inexperienced canopy pilots!
  21. Wow, that's pretty strong! Care to comment how you really feel?
