Stephanie, First off, BEER! Glad ya didn't die. You did the right thing. I had my 3rd chop a few weeks ago on #1668 in 3 years on the sunset load on a Sunday. I wasn't able to get back in the air because of weather for a couple of weeks. Last friday I went to the dz just to pick up my jumpsuit and wasn't even thinking about jumping when the put the otter on a call. Last minute I decided to just go for a hopnpop. I didn't even grab my digitude. Riding up in the plane I got nervous not knowing if I'd get 2500 or 4500. I got to thinking about saddling in just under 1000' on my spinnig mal after dumping at 2000'. This was the most nervous I have been in a loooooong time. The hnp from 4500 was fine so I was now back on the horse that threw me. Went to SSM Sunday and on the second jump found myself in major line twists again! I was able to get the canopy flying straight after I grabbed my cutaway pillow and kicked out of it. The 5th jump of the day after deployment, I found myself on my back with a spinning line twist on a 27 cell loaded 2.2/1 again fortunately I was able to kick out before a grand. Story said, even with quite a few jumps you still can get nervous, fear keeps you allert. Be mentally prepaired for a mal on EVERY jump! Trust that your training and instincts will react as taught. I've never even looked for my handles before a cutaway, instincts put my hands on them! Also on my last chop I was too low to worry about getting belly to earth before going for the reserve and it opened great!

How often do you replace your Vectran lines.
jumperconway replied to dsbbreck's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
With the exception of the lower steering lines, which I replaced at 350 jumps, my lines still looked new at 500 jumps. I packed indoors on CLEAN carpet air conditioned! I would have had no problem going 1000 with the exception of the steering lines which began to show wear! -
. Don't EVER again be the first to leave a big way! Someone has to be first. Sparky It has to be the person in the middle with the first pilot chute extraction before ANYONE turns!

What the hell are "skyfivers"? -
Oh you silly nonAmericans, don't you know? it's our world now. everyone start speaking American NOW and quit using kilometers or we'll use the bomb. Multiply mph by .87 to get approx knots. 14mph=12knots 25mph=22knots 35mph=30knots 45mph=39knots Knots have nothing to do with American or non-American. It the the measurement of speed used in all aviation. It is not .87 but 1.15. Take 100 mph, multiply by 1.15 and you get 115 knots. Take 100 knots, divide by 1.15 and you get 87 knots. Sparky --------------------- It has nothing to do with knots, how about KPH (killometters p/h). Don't EVER again be the first to leave a big way!

QuoteQuoteAfter examining my main canopy, we discovered that one of my brake lines had become unstowed which caused the spiral. This probably could have occured when I grabbed the risers after seeing a line twist in progress. I am not for sure. ***Chances are it occured on opening. QuoteFor the most part, I want to thank all my instructors at Spaceland for their excellent training. I feel like I was well enough informed to know exactly what to do in the situation. You never know how you are going to respond to these situations until you actually get into them. *** I'm not gonna bash instructors here because I don't know what kind of training you recieved but I'll tell you straight up that procedures for dealing with brake lines that come unstowed on opening is first jump course stuff. Unstowed brake lines are generally just a problem that is easily remedied by unstowing the other one, unless you are under a highly loaded main. Aside from not spiraling into the ground, you did very little right here. Perhaps you should solicit some emergency procedures training before your next jump instead of patting yourself on the back here and fishing for compliments. ---------------- Granted, the first thing for an experienced jumper is what you said but for a newbie is to save her/his fucking life and not have a Cypres fire! With experience comes timing and faith. I almost chopped twice this weekend because of major line twist on a highly loaded 27 cell but fortunately was able to get out of them! First cutaway and survive and learn is a good thing! She was in the saddle at 1500 feet! For a young jumper she did the right thing!!!!! Don't scold her for using her reserve on this one! She lived to jump another day. I will talk to her about things to do in that sit. again but she walked away! That's VERY important and don't negate that!

Chris has a stack of Heineken...we are the reason that he is an alcoholic!!! That's funny because that other case was still there Friday and he said he's kinda on the wagon right now! And my cutaway handle is out there also.
-
Nice job Kim, I bought Chris Heiniken for my reserve ride from 2 weeks ago also and almost cutaway twice yesterday on jump 2 and jump 5 at SSM! Glad ya didn't die! Now about those handles......... Bluz, Conway

Welcome back Ray!

I was responding to another post. I'm still on a 79-27 Xaos.
-
The fact that I chose not to go after being asked to go!
-
OK agreed, The term negative recovery arc meaning extended recovery arc versus positive recovery arc, where a canopy will go to more than it's normal glide is the meaning.
-
Regarding recovery arc and the infamous negative recovery arc. I'm jumping a Velocity 96 now, loading at 2.1. I guarantee if a hook that sucker at two thousand feet, by the time I'm ready to flare, it's back to its regular level of descent. Negative recovery arc is a crock of shit - super friggin long recovery arc - oh yeah, but not negative. And you're right, having to bump the toggles takes away from the efficiency of flying the canopy through the arc. The Stiletto after a dive will actually go into a desent rate of less than normal flight after a HP turn. I see it every weekend. HP canopies with a "negative recovery" arc will not (edit to add without toggle or rear riser input). I jump a 27 cell Xaos and it will definately not go beyond normal flight after a HP turn. The Stiletto will go to basicaly level (momentarily)flight on it's own where my Xaos won't!
-
Thanks Bill for the report! Now you understand why I decided not to be a part of this. My BIG Xaos is an 88. Bluz and good luck! Conway

If it looks like a golf ball it's Trent. If the other from Saceland is White with purle X's, it's probably Anomaly Stevie's brother Eric Boyd.

How necessary are booties?
jumperconway replied to Nightingale's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
QuoteIt's already been said, you don't HAVE to have them, but they sure make a difference. So Bob, how come you STILL can't track? -

jumperconway replied to Nightingale's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Booties are not a must for RW! They are of significant value in RW. Especially the bigger RW you get into. Why would you take a knife to a gunfight? Why not use the technology to your advantage. When tracking, it's like kickin in the afterburners! You may use that suit for 1000 jumps, why not get what you'll use that long?
