Today I'm dealing with the fact that a close friend passed away last night after a week and a half on life support from a low turn, downwind accident. I was on the same load and had already landed when the tragedy happened and fortunately I didn't witness it. As a long time jumper told me after it happened, we've all fucked up before and were fortunate enough to walk away with only our pride damaged not necessarily from superior skills , just better luck. The jumper that passed was extremely current with several hundred jumps under a big docile canopy. There may have been several bad decisions that lead to the final fatal mistake. Keep your options always open. Never paint yourself into a corner that you can't get out of safely. Stay current, keep your gear in top shape and deal with it. If it's your turn to go, time over. As is said here often, this is a sport that even though you do everything right, you still may die. The same can happen to you in your car but you probably never think about the risks involved there you just accept it. Fear in skydiving keeps you on your toes. Don't get complacent, keep the fear but don't get bogged down in it. Use it to your advantage and keep on truckin. Stay safe and jump long, Conway

I tried uploading a picture to an ad and it would say that it was a bad address. Also tried to upload a new avatar and it just compressed mine virtically the same as Hooknswoop's avatar. Any clue? I've tried it from 2 computors with the same results.

Quote...I'm having a tonsilectomy tomorrow morning... ick. My doc says NOT to eat ice cream or dairy products (produce too much phlegm)...and NO JUMPING for at least 2 weeks. ] That's funny, I had mine taken out in the late '60's and the first thing they gave me was ice cream. My old roomate still has his and gets sick several times a year where as I very rarily get sick at all. I only remember feeling bad for a day and don't understand the no jumping thing.

Leaving Houston to Perris I carried my rig on in a small duffle bag. After x-raying it they pulled it aside to inspect the bag, feeling all around the rig, I offered to take it out when he came up with my Jack Knife hook knife. I forgot it was in the bag and explaned to him that it was only to cut parachute lines and he said no problem and put it back.

] I agree. You were last out on a big load or something? I am surprised deployed at 2k and yet, people were actually below you after you cutaway. Glad your ok. And definitely... safety above stability. No we were a 4 way and first out! I pulled high. -
I Owe My Rigger a Bottle!!
jumperconway replied to jumperconway's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Being on my back after this the major line twist, I deployed my reserve while in a back to earth situation. I looked over my shoulder and saw another canopy below me and decided to deply unstable so as not to take a chance on going through someone elses canopy! I was feet first after the cutaway from the G force! The reserve opened up fine! Deploy safely, not stable! -

Jump #1668, sunset load 4 way brake off 3500' deployed about 2000' and I had a rope overhead but it was sniveling level then inflated fully and put me on my back and started twisting up more. I new I wasn't going to have time to deal with this getting worse so I chopped it at 1250' per my pro track and saddled under my PD113 at 985'. I deployed the reserve on my back because there was another canopy below that I saw over my shoulder and it openned beautifully. Everthing landed pretty close to the hangar except my cutaway pillow that I dropped during the 2 handed reserve deployment. Oh well, just another Chris Miller save (my second from him)! Sweet tip toe landing on the PD, they rock! -
Ever lost your cut-away equipment?

Have you ever bought a new main?
jumperconway replied to fudd's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Started off used 170 Silhouette, 300ish jumps when downsizing to sub 100 Icarus had a beautiful 99 in stock so figuring that I would probably never downsize I bought it. Now after 2 used 21 cell Xaos's I bought a custom 79' 27cell Xaos because of efficiency I will probably never downsize again. -
If your home DZ banned swooping...
jumperconway replied to gus's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
2 of the 3 DZ's that I frequent have signs stating no hook turns or hook turns will not be tollerated and I hook at both. If I couldn't, I simply wouldn't jump there anymore. Like someone else said, I think at these 2, it's more a warning to the inexperienced that hooking youself in isn't an option. At my regular DZ, I have seen experienced jumpers warned that if they fuck up and have to dig to save their life again that they would not be allowed to swoop! Here there are no rules except, Be safe! -
I hate seeing this crap, we all know the risk.

QuoteThanks for correcting that... I will be at Precision for many years to come thank you.. Glad to hear that Chris, always a pleasure, from another satisfied (multiple) Xaos pilot! -
Please note that I said FORWARD on the heading. Please argue with someone with a studied opinion, I merely forwarded it!!!!!! I truly believe that extremists in vertually every catagory are somewhat WHACKED!

The Dropzone.com USPA Liability Insurance Poll
jumperconway replied to Scrumpot's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I was wrong and believe that most policies have a similarly worded exclusion. It is excluded per my policy, Quote; bodily injury or property damage arising out of ownership, maintenance, operation, use, loading or unloading of aircraft. Aircraft means any device used or designed for flight, except model or hobby aircraft not used or designed to carry people or cargo -
>Allah or Jesus? >By Rick Mathes > >Last month I attended my annual training session that's required for maintaining my state prison security clearance. During the training session, there was a presentation by three speakers representing the Roman Catholic, Protestant and Muslim faiths who explained their belief systems. > >I was particularly interested in what the Islamic Imam had to say. > >The Imam gave a great presentation of the basics of Islam, complete with a video. After the presentations, time was provided for questions and answers. > >When it was my turn, I directed my question to the Imam and asked: "Please, correct me if I'm wrong, but I understand that most Imams and clerics of Islam have declared a Jihad [Holy war] against the infidels of the world. And, that by killing an infidel, which is a command to all Muslims, they are assured of a place in heaven. If that's the case, can you give me the definition of an infidel?" > >There was no disagreement with my statements and without hesitation he replied: "Non-believers!" > >I responded: "So, let me make sure I have this straight. All followers of Allah have been commanded to kill everyone who is not of your faith so they can go to Heaven. Is that correct?" > >The expression on his face changed from one of authority and command to that of a little boy who had just gotten caught with his hand in the cookie jar. He sheepishly replied: "Yes." > >I then stated: "Well, sir, I have a real problem trying to imagine Pope John Paul commanding all Catholics to kill those of your faith or Pat Robertson or Dr. Stanley ordering Protestants to do the same in order to go to Heaven!" > >The Imam was speechless. > >I continued: "I also have a problem with being your friend when you and your brother clerics are telling your followers to kill me. Let me ask you a question: Would you rather have your Allah who tells you to kill me in order to go to Heaven, or my Jesus who tells me to love you because I am going to Heaven and wants you to come with me?" > >You could have heard a pin drop as the Imam hung his head in shame. > >Chuck Colson once told me something that has sustained me during these 20 years of prison ministry. > >He said to me: "Rick, always remember that the truth will ultimately prevail." > >--And I believe it shall! >~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The Dropzone.com USPA Liability Insurance Poll
jumperconway replied to Scrumpot's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Grant, I am sure that the personal liability in my home owners policy would cover me outside my domain. I don't think that me falling intensionaly out of a plane with a parachute falls under "acts of God". -
Totally fucked, USC #1!

This computor is at work and is a virgin! The ad was in the rectangular ad space at the top of the page. I put the cursor over it to see what showed up at the bottom trey and it looked like a normal dropezone addclick/addcycle address. It was very explicitly broken into 3 blocks, c#m shots, hardcore and slick teens or something. I PM'd a moderator about it and when I went back it was gone. I knew I should have copied print screen!

Anyone else see the porn ad pop up at the ad space on the top of the page here? Just saw it on an incidents page and I can't believe Sangiro would sell a hardcore ad for all the public to see and it was definetly NSFW!

The differance in my 21 loaded 2.1 - 2.4 was amazing. The difference between my 27 was bigger at the same difference my 27 now dives are just as long on the 21 with more bottom end on the flare. The 27 just likes to be loaded heavier to dive.

good point! sounds like a job for the midnight paint team Several of us joked about exactly that at the POP's world attempts!

QuoteI am sure you did not have a problem reading flags. I was just stating that I thought I saw a Tetra at Perris. The color of the tet at Perris makes it very difficult to read from a distance. The solid flourescent orange one at Spaceland is very easy to read from a distance.
