Don't you mean that the UN imposed? And that's not the reason anyway... Sadam's rule/plundering was the main reason J All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke

Not all situations are the same... if we blew someones house up, and it was not a military target, we should rebuild it. But we did not take out the electrical backbone or the water disto system, Iraqis did, and that money should be repaid. As for the UN, I'm not surprised that they are reluctant to jump in at this point (the administration should not be either), but I still feel they have some responsibility... so on that I guess we will agree to disagree. The coalition went through great pains to avoid damaging infastructure during the campaign... utilities were not denied throughout the action, until Sadam loyalist denied them, that is. Should the US, or any country other than Iraq for that matter, be paying for the reconstruction? IMO, No. Any money we spend on Iraq should be considered a loan, and be repaid. You think the '91 war was Bush Sr.'s war? Far from it, and it stopped where it did because taking it further would have draw the ire of the international community. Then it was the UN's turn to keep Sadam in check, which it failed to do. Clinton wanted to go, but did not have the political will. Bush lumped it in with the war on terror, maybe he should not have, but it still needed to be done. He was and continues to be hamstrung by some bad (IMO) advisors (read Rumsfeld), and failed to fully develop all the contigencies and long term plan, but here we are. The UN holds some responsibility for how the situation got to where it was pre war, and in turn, holds some responsibility in fixing the place. I jump a Firefly camera suit, and love it... there are several others that make them, Tony and Flight Suit come to mind. The Firefly has great range, from slow tandems, to fast 4-way... can even sitfly (yes, sitfly not backfly) under a 125 way. Curious canopy question for the Napkin jumpers
jdhill replied to jumper03's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
You do not need to induce speed into a sub-100sf canopy to land it safely... I have seen a 68sf VX loaded at 3:1 land in half breaks uneventfully. Josh (velocity 96 @ 2.4:1) All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke -
For seven years in the army I wrote EVERY one of my evaluations and awards, and for that matter, I've written every one of my civilian evaluations since getting out too... it is SOP... bosses are lazy, especially at the MAJ and LTC level. When I finally received my ETS award (3 months after getting out) I returned it unopened. It had been 8 months since I wrote the recommendation, and it held absolutely no meaning anymore. You will still find them in some arms rooms around the US Army... for whatever reason, when my Infantry Battalion was deploying to Somalia they took them away... Some units still have them for entry teams, SRT, Rangers, etc. It is a better gun than the POS Mossberg "Military Model" As for your original question... I used to have an FFL, so they are on a list somewhere anyway Benelli M3 HK USP Glock SA .45 AR-15 Carbine (pre-ban) Colt .38 Super Auto Pre-ban AR-15 receiver (can decide what I want to build on it yet) Used to have... You are correct that Clinton won both elections... but in neither election did he gain a majority of the popular vote. Ross Perot was a spoiler in both elections. The majority of the voters in the country voted for someone other than Clinton. J All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke

I don't think it was a matter of not thinking, just not thinking it all the way through. The war still would have (IMO, should have) still happened, only with more thought put into the planning for the aftermath. Saddam needed to go, daddy Bush knew it, Clinton knew it (but didn't have the political cajones to do anything about it), and GWB knew it too. In the end, I think the region will be better off for Saddam being ousted, but there is a LONG and rough road before we get there. The problem is I don't see them identifying viable solutions... The CENTCOM commander says the problems are lack of cooperation from the Iraqi people and insufficient intelligence... how do you address these problems? In the short term the answer is more resources, i.e. troops. I do think they understand that, but they continue to sing the "our current troop strength is sufficient" song... but continue to ask for more international support (troops) for the operation. And they can't figure out why other countries won't send them? Because a large part of the world says, "you didn't want our input before the war, now you want our troops? Screw you." The US is unklikely to relenquish any authority to the UN, so it will be up to us, and that will ultimately mean more troops. I would have a hard time identifying a "cause" that they are fighting for... the profit motive is right on the money (no pun untended) though. J All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke

Most folks who know me , know me as being fairly right leaning, but in this instance I find myself agreeing with many of the critisisms of the current SoD. I have begun to tire of old Rummy and his experimentation with our forces while in harms way. The time for experimentation is in training, not in combat. The prosecution of this conflict on a political level is pathetic, IMO, and Rummy's "more with less" attitude is largely to blame. "Not possible to predict..." I must throw the bull shit flag on that one. When I was a young 2LT working in the S2 (Intel) shop of an Infantry battalion we knew it was a possibility, and we trained for it... when I was a slightly older CPT, and an operations officer in an intelligence battalion, we knew it, and planned for it. It happened because we did not have sufficent resources on the ground to follow the lead elements north, namely the 4th ID sitting of the coast of Turkey. Had they been in the theater they would have been able to secure POWs instead of releasing them with a pat on the head saying, now you guys don't come back and fight now, ya hear." Lead elements would have been able to move faster because their rear elements and lines of communication would have been secured. And by moving faster, prevent the drifting away of significant units on the battlefield, troops that are now fighting against us on their terms instead of ours. It's not all Rummy's fault, afterall he was handed a military after 8 years of Clinton (and if you don't believe that had an impact, your wrong, those were the years that I served, I know the impact it had first hand)... But part deciding when to go to the fight, is knowing when you have the right resources in place... and we went to the fight short handed, because Rummy thought we could do more with less, and still win. "Major" combat might be over, but we have far from won. Just my opinion. J All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke

I would venture to guess that there is at least one skydiver who has the virus on their machine... I have received several hundred of these type messages, but only to my aerialfusion.com address, and none of my others... only other skydivers have/use that address. And its not my machine... mine's a Mac that is virus free. Josh All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke

Well, I have a Sigma 15mm and a Canon 20mm that I use on my D60... on that camera and the 10D a 20mm lens is equal to a 32mm on a film camera, the 15mm is equal to a 24mm... 28mm was more or less the "standard" general purpose lens for film cameras in skydiving, which is righ in between what the 15mm and 20mm lenses... with a 6MP camera you can crop quite a bit, so some have chosen the "wider is better" approach (if they can only get 1 lens)... I like having options in the bag for which lens to use... but I tend to use the 20mm more often, and the 15mm for special stuff, and up close stuff like Freeflying.
