I have a small collection of my favorites here.

When I was out there last year, I did not carry my log book, my desktop computer would not fit in my gear bag... so they asked to see my protrack... fired it up, and xerox'd the screen (glad the date function was still working then)... On the whole, I did not find it to be any big deal to check in, no more so than any other DZ I've been to. J All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke

With over 1K camera jumps on either elipticals or x-braced canopies, I would say no adding a camera in and of itself does not increase your chances... That said, there are other things that go into the mix... camera suits, body position, what's going on under you at opening time... you must pay extra attention to body position... If you flip on you back to get a tnadem opening shot, then flip right back over and dump, you may not have the best of body positions... that is just one scenario... When flying camera, you need to be very deliberate at pull time... J All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke

Premier... there is a learning curve, but its not too bad... there are lots of training resourses out there for it too. It is a little pricey, but you can get high end results... there are cheaper ones out there, but you get what you pay for. for me, at some point it is just not "fun" to fly my canopy in given wind conditions... I can still do it, with a saftey magin that I am comfortable with... its just not fun... If I'm getting paid, I am willing to "work" during my canopy flight, still with my safety margin... IMO, it is not a matter of increased risk for a buck, it is increased work. There is a point at which the safety margin has shrunk beyond my comfort level... at that point an extra buck is immaterial, and not worth the risk... I don't do this for a living... what money I make at it goes right back into the sport... those that do do this for a living might approach this differently... similar to jumping while injured... I'll take a few days/weeks of to let a sore or tweaked neck heal... full timers might get right back on the plane. My fun jump limit is 20mph, and at that it needs to be a jump I really want to be on... 25 is my working limit, knock off 5-10 if it is gusty... $30 ain't worth getting hurt or breaking a camera... I've jumped in 30mph... coming straight down under a velocity is not much fun... my highest was about 46mph... the winds came up after take off, and word did not get to the plane before most had already exited... whoops, how do i convert CRW to anything else

The software that came with your camera should do the trick... or get either the RAW plug-in for PS, or the newest version of PS (PS-CS) where it is a built in feature. J All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke -
Anybody using the photoshop CS raw plug-in ??
jdhill replied to speedformula's topic in Photography and Video
I've used it... Using a Canon, I don't see alot of benefit for shooting RAW in Frefall... the file size is bigger and takes longer to process, for not alot of gain in end quality... plus it adds another step in your processing workflow... Now for someone shooting an Olympus E-20... there may be some gain... assuming you would use the highest file setting otherwise... the RAW file size is smaller and clears the buffer faster... meaning more shots per jump... the extra in the workflow might be worth it... In any case, if you shoot RAW, the plug-in works well... J All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke -
Epson 1280 is also my choice... I have tried other inks and paper and found that 3rd party ink tends to require much more cleaning... the Epson paper is great... looks and feels like the any other photo... other paper looks like you printed it at home. There are lots of discussions about the topic... do a search... The Canon D60 / 10D have a proven track record. Not sure if the D100 has a remote plug. J All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke

While "playing" might have been a poor choice in wording, the spirit of the post is correct... For officers, time away from branch specific assignments are not good for the career (for those of you that are still in, if you have not learned this yet, don't believe your assignments officer!)... Officer jobs in Recruiting Command (where the GKs fall) are considered to be Branch Immaterial, and time "away from your branch" except for maybe AG types... Not a good use of the money invested in LT's and CPT's that are needed elsewhere in the Army. It is also in line with the rest of Recruiting Command, where NCO's play (or should be playing) a more prominent role in the chain of command (no officers below Company Commander) Additionally, Officers are in shorter supply than enlisted (both in raw numbers and in % of slots filled). The Army can afford to detail a battalion's (-) worth of enlisted to the work or the GK's, but not a battalion's worth of officers. The are other Army organizations that you won't find many officers, such as their sports teams, and very few (if any) on the marksmanship team. And here I am, a vetran, at work... BTW... I think he should take the CM... I doubt any jury would convict. J All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke

You're correct, it is not in the account in the original post, but it was reported, by several TV outlets, when the story first came out last week. J All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke

One should note that he discharged his weapon into a discharge barrel, there was no possibilty of hitting the prisioner... the threat of phisical harm has alway been an effective means of soliciting information... the problem with it is that one cannot determine the credibility of information gained in this manner... I disagree that this was a case of torture... if he had shot at the wall next to the prisoner's head or shot him in the leg, I would agree with you, but not into a discharge barrel. 1st... learn to fly your body, fall straight down, move without thinking of the mechanics of the move, rear float exits (from the step if you've got one), 0 momentum docks, etc... you may also want to learn some freefly... the more positions you can fly in, the better you will be able to manuver to "get the shot"... As far as canopy control... lear to pack soft openings on a canopy that is appropriate for your experiance... second, become consistant, and controled in your landings, if you are not standing up 99.9% of your jumps, wait on adding the camera. On the ground, learn as much as you can about: Cameras (what type do plan on using? Video, Still, both?) editing (how do you intend to do it? Liniar Non-Lin?), principles of photography and videography, and the software packages that go along with them (Photoshop, Premier, etc.). Take it slow, there is no rush... wait until you are completely comfortable in the plane, in the air, under canopy, and on the ground, before you add a camera(s) to the mix. If you've got 2 bodies in your trunk, don't speed in maryland :)
jdhill replied to kevin922's topic in The Bonfire
I thought everybody knew not to speed near Elkton... that place has been a speed trap for years! But thanks for the heads up, next time I have bodies in the trunk, I'll keep it to the poseted speed limit... 1st - get more jumps before thinking about shooting tandems... Since you mentioned Tony as your suit of choice, the A or C wing should work for you... I think a B would be too small, and a D would be way more than you need... When you get it, jump it a few times without the camera helmet, get used to how to pull and how to get control of you canopy before adding the camera to the mix. Spend a good number of jumps shooting RW stuff before going out with tandems. J All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke

How 'bout we try this... shoot an accuracy approach ONLY when the area is completely clear. That might mean pulling high and waiting until everyone else lands; it might mean a second pass or even a separate load. Safety outweighs convenience, I think. There, I think that works nicely... On both sides of the issue, you have to know when to say when... everybody is responsible for not doing stupid shit in the landing area, HP pilots, LP pilots, and everybody in between. Perhaps at your DZ, but not all... I've seen plenty of experianced jumpers casue this problem, and are jsut being a pain in the ass... accuracy approaches to imaginary pees... Just as big a problem as swoopers having to swoop the beer line every jump. All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke

I'm used to the "for sale" year-end type thing... if your's is for personal use, then go for it... probably should have gotten a VHS instead of DVD. J All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke
