Bath -- Once a year whether I need it or not.
jdhill replied to quade's topic in Photography and Video
I too believe in avoidance... but in CA (where Q and Duece jump), like in AZ, dust is a fact of life, short of buliding a clean room on the DZ where you can change your lens... Unfortunately the problem exisits here in TX too... I find my camera is need of cleaning, just been too lazy to do it. I would say that would not be legally praticing your rights. J All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke

Which is which? Most of the swoopers I know fly more predictable patterns than the so called "conservative" landers do. The problem with separate landing areas is that they are not respected, by either group... We once set up a swoop lane, and made announcements over the PA and on the AC, that only swoopers were to land in the lane, and that the swoopers should also not fly the beer line... guess what happend... so many "conservative" landers landed square in the middle of the lane and stood there, that all the swoopers went back to the beer line... I gave up on the idea because it was not worth my time to set up the lane in the morning. J All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke

A left 270 is nothing but a normal left hand pattern with greatly abriviated downwind and base legs... you are just entering the pattern a a different point than others... The problem I see with a right 270 is that you cannot see the traffic that is behind and bellow you in the pattern... that you will trun directly in to... a left 270 allows you to see them and they to see you (with the exception of someone else doing a L270) J All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke

My preference is to do a left 270, because it allows me to see all the other canopies in the pattern and chose my route to avoid them, or abort my turn if the pattern is too congested (because that is my responsibility)... yes potentially put you head on with others on their base legs, but should they be on a base leg at 700-1000'? Not how I leard to fly a standard pattern. The key is to fly a predictable pattern... the majority of swoopers at my home DZ fly very predictable set ups for their landings, and those that do not are encouraged by to do so by those of us that do... I have advocated setting up separate landing areas for HP and LP landings, and a one way or the other landing direction in the MLA, but neither was respected (typically by those performing LP landings). I would say that is too long for my tastes... but it depends on the style of your whole video... I try to keep my works more fast moving, with very few segment dedicated to any one jump... I may do a segment dedicated to an event or a particular team, but I still try to keep the pace fast. But that is my style... find what works for you, and your chosen audiance. Not very good publicity, if you ask me... 9th overall (not too bad)... only in the top 10 in one event (7th in speed, 17th in distance, 12th in accuracy)... best you can say is that is no better than a VX, but more likely a 4th place canopy (after Velocity/Xaos/VX in no particular order)... I don't forsee too many folks standing in line to get one... there is more publicity about the Katana... J All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke

It is surprising to me that Jim, or anyone for that matter, would jump a proto in a world chamionship. J All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke

Who's got the info on flying a CANON GL2 3ccd?
jdhill replied to Vertifly's topic in Photography and Video
I have seen one in my travels... The guy reported no problems, but he was only a belly/above the formation type flyer... it has the same image stab. as other canons, I don't know why it wouldn't have the same problems. In short, yes... just understand that there may be some things in the book the FCE won't have... Why not get a book on FCE instead? There are several here. J All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke

Read up on "Actions" and "Batch Processing" in the help file or manual... it should tel you all you need to know. J All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke

Congrats to Trent, Stevie, and Jed of Spaceland Anomaly for getting the Silver in Open Freefly! Way to go. And to the Alchemy (Gold) and FSC (Bronze) guys too. J All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke

Reads to me like it started off just fine... and the opportunity was squandered... still, no reparations. J All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke

If they want reparations, they should go to the folks that first sold them... not anyone else. Slavery was an accepted practice in the western world until the 1800's... once slavery was officially abolished in this country, those of african decent were offered an opportunity to return to their homelands (the creation of Liberia)... most of them stayed here... no reparations from this side of the pond are owed, IMO. I don't think any US Citizen should be held w/o representation... As I stated before, there are big problems with the Patriot Act, and I don't necessarily agree with the way some of the the detainees are being held at Gitmo... If we are not going to charge them, then we should turn them over to their repsective governments, not just let them go. But I don't have a problem with the DC sniper suspects being charged with terrorism. J All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke

If it is a guy holding a dime bag, it doesn't... if it is a guy holding a few kilos with the intent of selling it to generate income to finace operations... it does. J All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke

What about that was not terrorism? I know several people who were more concerned about being shot by this nut bag than getting blown up by Bin Laden... on a personal level terror is terror... it may not have been politically motivated, but still terrorism. Different than other serial killers, not really... they may have charged with terrorism today too... the same as BL, no not in the grand scheme of the things... but why should he be the bench mark? I agree that the Patriot Act has some problems and casts too wide a net... and the name "Dept of Homeland Security" still brings images of brown shirts and jack boots... but these guys could, would, and should have charged with terrorist activities without it. There is a difference between learning rear riser landings, and learning high performance rear riser landings. Everyone should lear to use their rears in the event of an emergency... only experianced pilots should explore HP rear riser landings, and they should approach them with great caution. What the President says IS the party line... his personal opinion IS de facto administration policy The general made these statements at engagements he was inviteded to as a general, becuase he was a general... that equals official capacity in my book. If he is taking that type of view into the office and uses it in his command capacity, imparting it on his troops... we will not win this war... the operations that his command is engadged in are central to the war on terrorism, and if he has such a narrow view of the conflict and the enemy... we will not win this war... and he will be too blind to see it coming. J All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke

Not when he is speaking in an official capacity (i.e. in uniform - as a general)... then he is speaking for the governement, and must spout the party line. If he were in a suit and tie, as Mr. Boykin, then yes he could say what every he wanted... You give up a lot of rights when you put on that uniform... you are the defender of democracy, not the practicer therof. Someone with his credentials should know that. Although I don't think they will ever get to see him... because they have perverted the very religion they claim to fight for... When I studied islam some years ago, I was taught that it was a religion of peace and acceptance... Extreamists have turned it into something else, something to promote themselves, not the religion (you don't see too many Imans blowing themselves up, do you?) The enemy may believe that they are fighting a holy war, but I feel they will find out differently when they are judged in the hereafter... As for us, we are not fighting a holy war, we are fighting against an attack on our culture, what ever the basis, our fight is not based on religion... theirs might be, but ours is not. And for the general... it's meatheads like this that made me want to leave the Army... Too many people with agendas, not enough soldier's soliders... unfortunately too many of the DoD policy makers today are idiots. Royal Gorge incident aftermath -- Press Clips
jdhill replied to quade's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Well... that depends on how their deed reads... if they own "air rights" to the property then they can own the airspace. The question would be to what altitude, which I believe is a local issue (have not been able to find the exact numbers, but there is a limit). I am very well versed in how classified material is handled, and not handled in many cases... too many people have clearances... and unfortunately the "need to know" criteria, is very loose... did Monica need to know? She had a TS clearance pushed through in a few days... IMO noone but members of the intelligence community (and then only those who work directly with the agent) should have knowledge of the names of specific agents that either are or maybe posted to the field. There are lots of ways this can play out. Some involve there being a crime, some don't. Some involve the administration, some don't. It will be interesting.
