PST uses 5' for pro and 10' for Adv... the old PPPB course was 14' for speed and 5' for distance and carve accuracy... Red Bull has a 5' bonus gate and 10' normal gates with "noodle targets" about 2' tall and a taget at the end of the course... each size has different utility... 5' gates really force you to be on and also pose less of a snag risk... camera flyers take on additional expense and risk so that you and/or others can watch/debrief/judge skydives after the fact... and if you want a dub that extra time... if you don't feel they are worth it, choose not to use their services. If your organizer is not getting good video people, tell them that its not worth the price or that they need to find another cameraflyer... I'm not debating, perhaps you're not getting my point... I'm not saying anyone should change the RW, FF, Student type exit order... I'm saying the the type of jumprun makes the exit order more or less of an issue. I have been on x-wind jumpruns at Eloy and Perris (which, according to Q only flie jumprun in one of two directions, leaving the possibility of alot of x-winders), WFFC, and others. I have read the attachements... does not offer anything that I am not aware of, or do not practice... x-wind jumpruns do not change the airspeed or groundspeed of the aircraft, but do change the impact of drift on any given group, all groups will drift downwind, which is neither toward or away from any other group from the same aircraft. Another advantage is that one under canopy, no path back to the landing are is under another group (to include a 180^ second pass). Jumprun is in to the wind...RW group jumps out first up wind of the landing area... FF out next, further up wind of the landing area... FF group falls faster and opens higher... upon opening flys downwind back to landing area... this path takes the second group (now under canopy) under the first group (still in Freefall)... both logical and physically possible, even where you jump. I am not saying that FF should go in front of RW, am saying the x-wind jump run is a better answer (where possible), and some "big" DZ's use them with no problems. I just don't understand why skydivers feel they ought to get video or pictures for free... go figure Josh All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke

To me it's not so much that FF have higher wingloadings, but that they tend to open higher (at least at my DZ)... FF out last but open first, and say at 3.5K turn toward the landing area and fly under an RW group who is opening at 2.5K... potential disaster... The answer... crosswind jumpruns! No drift problems, no long spots (shouldn't be anyway), no exit order debate because it does not really matter... you still need to give appropriate separation between groups, but its not dependent on winds and jump type, just leave enough room so you don't track into the next group. Then it becomes work... Don't get me wrong, I rarely give any of my stuff away for free, but I get on a fair amount of loads just looking for good things to shoot... if I get something sellable or publishable, great... Now for teams and students, that's a different story... although those are becoming less and less of my jumps (by choice). Josh EDIT: Has this thread been sufficiently hijacked? This is a problem here in TX in the summer... not much you can do about it... anti-fog on the lens surface may help some... another trick is to take a hand warmer (wal-mart hunting section) and put it in a sock, put the sock over the lens for the ride to altitude... this will work in "mild" conditions... This past weekend, we had several layers... camera would fog up around 8k, then clear, then fog again around 6k. Nothing was working to stop the fog that day. here is a shot from Saturdays Hybrids put on by Spaceland Anomaly... Stevie, Trent, and Jed did a great job getting everyone together, with as many as 8 belly fliers! More are on my site here. Josh All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke

After brief period of general laziness, I have finally gotten around to putting some new pics on my site, including some of a BIG hybrid (16-way). Enjoy Josh All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke

Thanks for the info... I've been kicking the idea around a little more seriously since the last event I shot... several folks wanted to use CC's and the like... maybe as I run out of my paper stocks... Josh All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke

You can, but it takes more time than its worth... you treat each frame of the video like a picture... @ 30fps for full speed (half that for the web) it is still ALOT of time. EDIT: That vid was not a PS job. Josh All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke -

You can get it at Sam's Club (at least in Houston)... it's still over $1 a can, but you have to buy a whole case. J All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke

It's amazing what you will find in some waivers... I have seen a waiver (for a specific event) that said they owned the rights to any video or photos taken at the event... I lined through that part. Josh All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke

I just e-mailed Pier earlier this week about the same thing... should be out in June. Josh All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke

Just put it inside the helmet... cut a pocket in the lining, unless you have a huge melon, it should fit. Did this with my mindwarp millennium. works just fine and can hear it better too. Josh All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke

No, my last nationals experience was '01 @ Eloy... I don't think I waited more than 5 min... Never had long waits at local meets either. If the line was 4-hours long, then the dishonest type could find a hole to do 5 minutes worth of voodoo. Still takes time... not to mention a place to do it where no one notices you playing with your camera and a laptop in the middle of a comp. It might only take 5 minutes, but thats 5 minutes that no one can notice what your doing. Josh All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke

Could it be done, sure, but would you have time to do it? It takes time to re-render the footage... comp video is due upon landing... drop your rig and go to the dubbing station... even with faster laptops, you would be running suspiciously late. I agree that the off brands are somewhat of a risk... My Sigma 15mm works great, but my Sigma 20mm was hit or miss... so I got a Canon 20mm... which works great. It costs a little more, but it works every time. Josh All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke
