  1. Turns out that being a larder doesn't help with gas mileage Weight gain means lower gas mileage Reason #20001 to lose weight: save money on gas. Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.
  2. Pardon if my my post seemed argumentative; I certainly didn't mean it that way. Yup -- that's where the 1.0 incline comes in. The bigger factor is air resistance while you're running outside. Inside on a treadmill, there is none, and that's what makes it easier. Adjusting to a 1.0 incline fixes that problem and helps you get just about the same workout that you'd get outside. Yes indeedy, I cross-train on ellipticals for that very reason. Good luck in your workout program and happy runnin' to ya. 3. Hi guys. I've been following these threads, and using them as motivation because I've started a workout program designed for me by my old high school coach (who is now in some of my law school classes with me). I wanted to pipe up and say that while running in a gym on a treadmill may be more convenient, you have to run twice as long in order to get the same workout as running on the road. It only takes about half the effort to run on a treadmill. Indoor tracks are a whole different story, though. Brie Are you sure you're adjusting the treadmill to a fast-enough speed? If you crank up the treadmill speed to the pace you would normally run at on the road, with a 1.0 incline, you'll get pretty much the exact same workout. I know from experience because I train during the winter in the gym for the Boston marathon, which is in April (and inevitably requires at least some indoor training). Also, an elite female runner from Norway trained entirely indoors back in the late 80's, and ended up setting a world record on marathon day. It's entirely possible to get the same running workout on the treadmill. The only thing you won't get out of a treadmill is decent hill training -- that you will need to hit the roads for. edited to add: I hear ya. That's why I use a gym that offers TVs in front of its treadmills. In addition, I bring my IPod with me, and some books and/or magazines. All those distractions combined really make time fly by. 4. A drink with a suggestive name and provocative branding draws the wrath of young shoppers' parents. Petty stuff like this makes me wonder -- why is there no outrage from pro-family groups over viagra/cialis/levitra commercials shown ad-nauseum on the television? I figure that would be more offensive to parents than a drink in a store, no? Plus, I don't see how the name of a drink could encourage kids to try the illegal drug -- I think most kids are smarter than that. After all, I ate candy cigarettes when I was a kid but that certainly didn't lead me to start smoking. 5. Not even to save up for the double wide??? Oh SNAP!! Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.
  6. I, for one, would like to see more troops in Iraq. Just as the generals advised from the start, which the ass-in-charge ignored. Abandoning the cause would be a bad thing to do on so many levels. If we're going to fix this, it's going to require more than what we've committed. So we should do it right. And it should have been done right YEARS ago. Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.
  7. I like ya, Lloyd. I always liked ya. You were always the best of 'em. Best god-damn bartender from Timbuktu to Portland, Maine - or Portland, Oregon for that matter. Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.
  8. $31,000,000,000. Billion, not million. There are people in Florida serving life sentences for robbery because they used a gun, instead of a pen and a lawyer. I wish he was in the same cell so they could discuss the fairness. Billion. I think he got off lucky. 24 years for ruining peoples' lives and retirements is a slap on the wrist. Also, what kind of prison are they sending him to? He should be in the company of some real criminals, like murderers, rapists, etc. That's punishment. If he's in some posh, white-collar prison then there's not much justice, is there. I hope they send him to a high-security prison, where they put him in confinement for months at a time and comes out in 24 years a completely broken man. He deserves nothing less since he still denies the wrong that he did. Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.
  9. Actually I'm going out at 10pm downtown with some friends visiting from out of town -- but yeah, I can see how posting this on a Saturday night would seem kinda lame. I just felt the need to share this with others, one of those bizarre things that made me laugh, kind of like a monkey washing a cat. Plus I did a lot today on very little sleep so I'm a tad slap-happy.
  10. Go shrimpy, GO!! Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.
  11. At the time I watched it, I had no idea Silent Hill was based on a game. If I knew something about the game and was into it, I probably would have appreciated it a lot more. One thing I can credit that movie with is that it had some pretty amazing special effects. 12. Surprised to see that on a list here, what a classic -- I used to catch re-runs of that flick annually on WPHL-17 in Philly. That scene of the head rolling down the prom floor is truly unforgettable. To the original poster: A few recommendations -- Audition (Japanese with subtitles), truly a freak show, best watched on an empty stomach! Ringu (Japanese with subtitles, original version of The Ring, much better than its American remake) and Frogs, 70's invasive critter horror at its best (or worst, depending on how you look at it) Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.
  13. Sarcasm/practical joke? I was angry at myself after it was done for sitting through that movie, IMO truly one of the worst and unentertaining films I've ever seen. If you're serious, I'm curious to know what quality you found in that movie if you don't mind sharing. Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.
  14. Good stuff, gave it five stars. Thanks for sharing it. Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.
  15. Trent: Not necessarily declaring war on NK, but it's essentially a challenge to China that they will react to. We'd be inciting a bombing/invasion of Taiwan, as China has said repeatedly that they will invade the island if they get uppity with arms or declarations of complete sovereignty. Sundevil: China is just as macho as we are; they have the ambition of dominating their region. They won't put their tail between their legs and react by doing something we'd like them to do.Your assumption that China will react in our favor (straightening out N. Korea) after arming Taiwan isn't realistic. Really, I wonder if you're being sarcastic too. I agree, but unfortunately the risk of doing so outweighs the benefits. It's why we've been taking such a pragmatic approach to this. Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.
  16. In principle, this is a good idea. Your logic for China doing something about N. Korea is as a consequence of recognizing Taiwan is completely incoherent. "Throw gasoline on the fire, yeeehaawww cowboy" is kinda what you're getting at, yeah? It's in line with the kinda foreign policy of recent years, so this kind of rubbish doesn't surprise me at all. Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.
  17. That helps, thanks!!! Okay, I'm going back to the warm fuzzies of bonfire now. You kids play nice! But, but, but...we want you to stay....stay with us in the corner...you'll get used to it...stay...join us...muhuwahaahaahaahaahaa!!! 18. No real physical injuries to speak of, but I injured my reputation when I was 15 and finished an entire bottle of wine at the dinner table and vomited on the floor in front of my grandmother, mother and sister (it was really good wine). I think I remember taking a piss in front of everyone but I'm not sure if that was something I dreamt while I was passed out or actually did. I'm pretty sure I did it...but I was too embarrassed to confirm it with my mother or sister Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.
  19. Good post -- my thoughts exactly. "Compassionate conservatism" is giving Mr. Chavez an opportunity to make complete asses of us. Apparently, we still haven't learned from last year. 20. Okay, since you recycled a lame argument from Rush Limbaugh, I'll recycle a lame one from Al Franken. Read an excerpt from Bill O'Reilly's Those Who Trespass: So WHY NO MORAL OUTRAGE from fellow right-wingers, let alone at the fact that Mr. O'Reilly sexually harrassed an FoxNews employee over the phone? Such perverted literature poses a grave threat to the American family and its values!! And of course, we all know how much fictional books and theatre monologue influence public policy. Just as much if not more than actual politicians, right??!! Yes, this is a very lame attempt at a point. Just as yours/Rush's is. I'm done playing. Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.
  21. Anyone catch this over the weekend? I thought it was phenomenal, IMO Scorsese's best film since Kundun. Brilliant performances all around, not a single dull moment from start to finish. Highly recommended if you haven't seen it yet. Unlike most Hollywood films these days, this one is certainly worth the price of admission! 22. Not to speak for kallend, but perhaps it's because the original post is such a pathetically weak attempt at a point that it's not even worthy of a serious response. If there's any thread that deserves a good derailing/hijacking/bonfire-esque fluffing, it's certainly this one. Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.
  23. Careful now, you might invoke the wrath of one of the über-patriotic republican Texans here and get hit with some recycled comment about one of the Kennedys, Clintons or other liberal neo-communists. 24. I went last week, here are the pics. Even though I wasn't allowed to take pics, I couldn't help myself. That place was amazing. Thanks for the tip Micro! Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.
  25. Very cool. I really admire the athleticism and discipline it takes to achieve what you did on the ice there. I hope you translate that skill into the air and upload some freestyle videos when you have them available. I'll be waiting to see them. Thanks for sharing.
