  1. I get the idea that it's art from the way the bodies are being shaped in for spectacle -- resembles sculpture. Also read a promotion about it with the words "celebrating the wonder of the human form." Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.
  2. My understanding, from this and several other articles about "Bodies: The Exhibition" is that no consent was given by those on exhibit when they were alive. That's something I have an ethical problem with. It is Guther von Hagen's "Body Worlds" where those being exhibited gave consent. 3. Anyone else think this exhibition is beyond morbid and disrespectful to the dead? I have an open mind when it comes to art, but this is where I draw my line. I have friends who have gone to see this and enjoyed it and encouraged me to go, but after seeing some pictures (you can get a glance here) I say no way in hell would I go -- for ethical reasons and simply because I find no aesthetic value in a dead human body. What I find especially revolting is the way some of the bodies are carved up and/or positioned in certain ways for spectacle. And as an aside, I heard the exhibition is smelly too -- I imagine it's the formaldehyde or whatever preservatives they use to keep the bodies from decomposing. I just don't see how someone would be motivated to go see this, but I'm curious to hear other opinions. Thanks. 4. Just keep reading from your news sources and you will get the news that supports your (perfered) views as we all know there is nothing good happeinign over there unless you talk to the soldiers. Just keep reading from your skewed propoganda sources and you will get the swill that supports your (preferred) views as we all know that this cakewalk mission has been accomplished since 2003. 5. Of the handful of episodes I've seen, I think the trans-species surgery episode where the orthodox Jew becomes half-dolphin was hilarious. Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.
  6. I like what Gabriele Marcotti (one of the very few American sports journalists who can write intelligently about the sport) said about the alleged racist remarks Materazzi made, from here: Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.
  7. Maybe you'd be interested in checking this out -- perhaps France will be the world champions after all. Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.
  8. Here's a great read on the matter, though you may not agree with all that the writer says. The writer echoed what I initially thought -- that in addition to the insult, Zidane was frustrated with the lack of scoring opportunities (though I believe his header in 104' would have been a goal against any keeper in the world other than Buffon). As far as the game being cleaned up goes, I don't want instant replay or more refs either, but other than those two solutions I don't see any other way to resolve the problem -- unfortunately, the players themselves are certainly not going to change so long as diving and trash-talking are effective winning mechanisms. If I were to pick one, I suppose I'd choose more refs over instant replay. Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.
  9. But he is a sportsman. Sure, he had his bad moments on the world stage. But I remember he was a good sport during his days in Juventus in Serie A. I also know he does not get carded often and is known for playing cleanly, with skill and honor. I don't watch basketball often. Let's say I turn on the tube and see Dirk Nowitzki throwing a chair on the way to the locker room after game 5 of the finals vs. Miami. Then I judge him and say "he's a complete spaz, unstable and not a sportsman." It's not true though, he is a sportsman, great athlete and team player. He just had a bad moment, and it's not much different with Zidane. I agree wholeheartedly with that. Like others here have already said, this incident in time will mean little in light of his outstanding achievements in the game. 10. I think you've got that backwards. Sure the hardcore French fans will remember his career, but for most of us mortals who don't follow the sport, Zidane will forever be remembered now for his head butt. No excuses ... he fucked up. Fixed. People who follow the sport, French or not, will remember him for his brilliance on the field and the great sportsman that he really is. This is a small footnote in Zidane's stellar career. Those not familiar with the sport will likely remember him for this incident, but I'm sure that doesn't much matter to Zidane; he certainly has nothing to prove since his accomplishments speak for themselves. Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.
  11. No, we still don't know for sure, and I guess since Zidane gave his official statement on the matter, we never will. So, no details. And note, no mention of race or ethnicity, like the slanderous press have been reporting. So he planned the act since he knew there wouldn't be any future suspensions or punishments? Trash talking is a part of any sport, and Materazzi is a master of playing head games on the field (as was French coach Domenech in his heyday). I'm disappointed that Zidane would take the bait the way he did. As Zidane said Nonetheless he remains one of the all-time greats, and I hope he will not go down in infamy for the incident. 12. Wow, lucky man you are to have seen them live back in the day... For those interested, here's a good website dedicated to Syd. R.I.P. ... Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.
  13. Exactly. I could not have said it better myself. I think he deserves it for his game vs. Brazil. That peformance was one to remember, truly blew my mind. Yeah, it's a shame he lost his head, but I think he paid a price for it. In lieu of Zidane, who do you think should have gotten it? Cannavaro? Buffon? Pirlo? I suppose they would come in a very close second. I think the video was put together by one of his cult follower "interista" fans -- note the "FC Inter Production" message at the end of the video. A lot of Inter fans like him for the way he plays. Personally, I prefer a defender that relies solely on skill like Cannavaro or Nesta. Materazzi is a great defender and has been since his days at Perugia, no denying that, but I also know that he's been a cowboy for a long time as well, very prone to yellows and reds. He can completely f.ck up a match since he's so wild, and it made me nervous that he was filling in for Nesta (even though he did a great job vs. Czech Republic). I actually wanted Lippi to put in Barzagli instead of Materazzi for the final since he's so unpredictable. And I damn near had a coronary when Lippi sent him to take the second penalty kick -- I was convinced he would send a skyward rocketball over the crossbar. But he came through when it mattered most, so yes, the rest is all bullsh.t as you said. Hope you had a fun time celebrating there. 14. You think that's funny -- have a look at the way Matrix plays football. I laughed my ass off watching this video -- I think the man is half insane. Great goal-scoring defender, but a dubious choice for the national team given his disregard for clean play. Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.
  15. Danke Christel. I think Germany will be an even stronger team next tournament...certainly a force to be reckoned with in Euro 2008. I'm hoping the Azzurri can win that one, so that we tie you for six major titles; right now we only have one Euro as opposed to your three. Deutschland were great hosts, as we were to your team in 1990. Good deal Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.
  16. Syd Barrett, founder of Pink Floyd, dies at 60 Damn shame. I think Pink Floyd's best stuff was with Syd, and his solo stuff -- especially Madcap Laughs, were works of genius. Probably one of the most underappreciated artists ever. "wouldn't you miss me..." -- yes, I will R.I.P Syd. 17. I'd like to send an Azzurri jersey to your dropzone for you to pick up. Do you make it out to your dropzone often? Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.
  18. You think the well known facist said something to the magrebian that put him over to top? Really? That being said, Zidane should have kept his cool. The red was deserved. I didn't know Materazzi is a fascist, let alone a well-known one...is that his reputation based on rumours or is that really true? According to this article, the comment Matrix made to Zidane wasn't racial in nature (not defending what he did or said, this is just what this article is reporting): Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.
  19. Personally, I like hockey -- it's my favorite of the four major US spectator sports (I'm a Flyers fan). I'll admit though -- I don't know nearly as much about the sport as you do. Have a look at this post. Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.
  20. He did twist Zidane's nipple, and I agree to a certain extent that he is a punk. I think the more accurate term is that he's a cowboy -- wild and unpredictable. And very physical, with a knack for playing psyche-out games. He said something after that encounter with Zidane, which I suppose put him over the top. I think retaliation with a head-butt is understandable, but not during a game where the consequences are so costly. I think Materazzi, or "Matrix" as we Azzurri fans affectionately call him, was the man of the match yesterday -- caused Malouda's dive which gave France the 1-0, scored the equalizer, got Zidane sent off, and scored one of our goals in the shootout. If Nesta were not injured yesterday, Matrix would have been on the bench. He was my biggest worry before this game, since he's so wildly unpredictable and can make or break a match (see previous red card vs. AU). Fortunately for us, he made it yesterday. Have a look at his club play for Inter Milan vs. AC Milan -- that's the kind of guy he is. I personally don't agree with the coach selecting him for the national team because of stuff like this, but he is nonetheless a great defender. Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.
  21. You make a good case for him not to have it...but apparently that head-butt didn't factor in the decision to award it to him. I think Zidane deserved the Golden Ball because of that stunning performance vs. Brazil. He singlehandedly shut a great team down and ran circles around them...one of the best individual efforts I've ever seen. Sucks that he had to go out like that, though -- I'll be curious in the coming days to hear his reasons for going ape on Materazzi like that. Not a cool thing for a champ like him to do in front of over a billion people, in his final game as a pro . I hope he will not be remembered for that, because he shouldn't be. Worse than that incident though was Malouda's dive in the beginning of the game -- truly despicable. It all worked out in the end though, and I truly believe Italia were the best team overall -- our 12 goals were scored by ten different players. Practically everybody pitched in to bring the cup home after 24 long years Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.
  22. I don't know what got into Zidane -- very out of character for him. But I think his Golden Ball award was well-deserved. Cup or no cup, he'll still go down in history as one of the greatest ever. Easily the best player of his generation. I agree -- it was a classic. You had more confidence in the Italian team going into this match than I did...you're the man Mike! Cheers Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.
  23. Grazie Nick. If you remember, I said a while back that your team could very well go all the way, and you damn near did. If there was one team I was fearing most in the tournament, it was France, given your massive lineup and our recent record against you guys. I honestly didn't think we could win vs. Zidane & co. again -- he's been the "bestia nera" for us for a long time now... But I also said that the scandal would somehow help us, and it did. It feels great to be champions again. If I were to take this comment seriously, I'd ask you if you could honestly say to yourself that you did *not* steal the cup with Malouda's dive had Materazzi not equalised (that dive was by far the most flagrant of the tournament). But instead, I will take your comment as one made in jest. Cheers and thanks for being a sport. Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.
  24. What did you think of Malouda's dive in this game? That was the most flagrant one of the tournament. edited to add: That I can agree 100% with -- as a first generation Italian, that irritates me too. Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.
