  1. Assuming this is the Judeo-Christian g-d documented in the Bible and depicted by most American Christians, my question would be "If you are omniscient of all present, past and future, why would you create people whose souls will go to hell for eternity?" If I could ask a second one, it would be "Why did you create Satan?" PS, sorry if the questions are a repeat of what someone already posted; I didn't read through the 12 pages in this thread. 3. Not me. Nursing a f.cking stress fracture that I came down with on my lower left shin one week before the NYC marathon, after six months of training. Healing *very* slowly, g-ddamnit. 4. Thanks for the helpful advice all, much appreciated. edited to add: I jumped the day after the breakup and it didn't feel good at all, but perhaps a few days of it will. Maybe I'll hit up one of the holiday boogies, seems like a good idea. Thanks again for the advice.
  5. That's why I think the ban is a great idea. Hopefully the idea will catch on and the FDA will eventually follow suit and make a federal-level ban and corporations will find something healthier to help preserve the food they put on the shelves. 6. I recently broke up with someone I truly love, whose move to the other side of the planet is imminent because her job of five years is moving her there. I've been strong with breakups in the past, but this one is especially painful because of my feelings for her. I'm not the same person I was a couple weeks ago when we were still together. Nothing really feels good anymore -- being around friends, visiting family, eating, etc. On top of that, I'm nursing a nasty injury that prevents me from exercising, so working out isn't an option. I'm also not sleeping well. Being together until she leaves is no longer an option; we already tried that. And I'm not moving to the other end of the world -- we haven't known each other long enough for that kind of move together. The relationship is over and there's no hope of rekindling anything (already tried). To add to the problem, I'm not exactly the kind of guy that can just get out and meet someone new to fill the void. To be candid, life is feeling rather pointless right now. It's tough getting through each day. Just curious to hear what you do to help yourselves through these kinds of situations, looking for new ideas. Going out with friends isn't much of an option since most of them are out of town and/or married. I might take some classes and/or join some groups, but I'm looking for ideas that can help in the immediate term. Thanks for reading, thanks in advance for your input.
  7. Only time I heard that expression is in the chorus of Iggy Pop's "Lust For Life." The lyrics to the song are pretty bizzarre to begin with, but now I really wonder what the hell it means since I heard it elsewhere. 8. Don't take this as me being a re-post nazi (not my intention), but here's a thread I started back in July on the controversy of the exhibit -- you can see some points of view on the subject there in addition to the ones in this thread. I'm not quite sure what to make of it, though I might see it one of these days. 9. Why not? I took a one-hour nap in the Common last April and slept quite soundly. Just wonderin' -- seemed like a safe, clean place to me. Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.

  11. I believe hell just froze over! See there..now we are talking important stuff like music. Ever seen Bowie live? I've been to see him 4 times. First time was when he was doing the Ziggy Stardust tour with Mick Ronson. Kicked F*n Ass. Yes, saw him live once, in 1990, Sound & Vision tour at the Spectrum in Philadelphia. Great show -- he performed mostly his classics. He even played Life on Mars, which was a nice surprise. Crowd went nuts when he started on that one. Other than that, I've only seen videos of him live. Fantastic performer. Nothing like what you saw though, you very lucky man. What a show that must have been seeing him live at that time. Here's some nostalgia for ya... Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.

  13. Nice to hear there are other Bowie fans around here. A few of my favorite songs, in no particular order: Running Gun Blues Station to Station It's No Game (Part 2) Up The Hill Backwards Rock n Roll Suicide Panic in Detroit Width of a Circle I have an MP3 of Heroes in German, called "Helden." It sounds great in that language. If you're interested in hearing it PM me with your addy and I'll send it over.
  14. Any Bowie fans up in here? I'm listening to a CD that my ex-gf lent me, "Reality" from 2003, and wow, I'm blown away by it. His best stuff since 1980. I've been a fan of Bowie since I was 16, but only enjoyed his works between 1969 and 1980. After the album "Scary Monsters" (one of his greatest works) it seems he woke up one day and simply lost his creativity. The albums "Let's Dance," "Never Let Me Down," and the "Tin Machine" albums got progressively worse and some hurt so much to listen to that I lost faith in him as a musician. I figured it was the coke or the money that killed his inspiration. But this album "Reality" is really something, and I heard that "Heathen" and "Earthling" are good ones too, though I haven't listened to them yet since I got cynical on his recent stuff and gave up on him long ago. Now I look forward to hearing them. My faith is renewed in Bowie as a genius musician -- the man is making some phenomenal tunes now as he did 30 years ago. Long live the Thin White Duke!
  15. That's a beautiful snake -- my compliments. I used to have one just like it when I was in college, but it disappeared on me when I was cleaning its tank out (put it on the table, stepped out to empty the tank, came back 30 seconds later and it was gone forever). Scoured the apt. for it, but never found it. If I get a snake again it will be an albino corn snake -- they are one of nature's masterpieces. Only downside is feeding them the live baby mice -- they're awfully finicky aren't they. Post more pics later when he gets bigger, eh? 17. I have no idea. How do you explain it? Weakest cop-out ever. Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.
  18. So how do you explain the double standard? I'm all ears. Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.

  20. That's awesome -- I've seen people who do entire marathons joggling. What kind of distance did you do, or was it just for fun? I admire the coordination and concentration that takes, and once thought of taking it up myself. 21. ditto Same here. I never quite understood *why* someone would join a fraternity. Not knocking it -- but the way I looked at it, it's kind of like renting friends. You pay dues, and you have former strangers that are now called your "brothers." Not to mention the outrageous hazing rituals people go through just to belong to these groups. I mean, soggy biscuits, WTF?! Only with a gun to my head, and even at that, it's not a definite thing. And people do this voluntarily to become part of a group. That always baffled me. Ethnic/religious and academic fraternities -- I can understand why someone would join one of those, but I never quite understood the social ones. Again, not knocking it -- I've just been a loner as long as I can remember so social fraternities seemed very strange to me. I'm open to hearing another point of view on it, as I'm sure there must be a half-decent reason why so many people do it. 22. Care to share what some of those delicacies were? I'm curious.
  23. Nope -- I don't think Scorsese will get an Oscar for this one either. Hollywood is *extremely* politically correct, and using the N* word in the beginning of the movie (for no real reason; was totally unneccessary, really) doesn't help his cause. This kind of bigoted dialogue IMO has cost him in the past, albeit that Scorsese is simply a realist. It's almost as if Scorsese doesn't give a damn about winning an Oscar as he keeps on defying PC convention. Whether he deserves to win an Oscar for this one? Personally I think so, but then again, this is not an original screenplay. Turns out this is adapted from a Hong Kong crime flick called Mou Gaan Dou (Internal Affairs), so that may cost him some points as well. 24. from here: May seem like "government paternalism run amok," but I think extreme situations (obesity in America) call for extreme measures -- and what better way to begin attacking the problem than to ban one of the main ingredients that causes it -- partially hydrogenated vegetable oils. I hope the ban becomes law and has the nation-wide ripple effect that the article suggests will follow as a result. Maybe one day we'll even stop seeing the garbage listed in the ingredients of half of the packaged foods available on supermarket shelves. And maybe I'm dreaming, but perhaps some day the republican corn lobby will be shut down and we'll stop seeing high fructose corn syrup listed in those ingredients as well.
