Should USPA raise there standards to Skydive U level for ratings
JustChuteMeNow replied to ozzy13's topic in Instructors
Never thought of it that way, so don't say that too loud, because we don't want any more of them figuring that out. Think of how stupid the average person is and realize that statistically half of them are stupider than that. -
I know you are talking about the pictures and don't worry because unlike Paris Hilton I would never share these intimate times

Should USPA raise there standards to Skydive U level for ratings
JustChuteMeNow replied to ozzy13's topic in Instructors
I think what tdog says bears repeating. Very good training can be received from course directors that are USPA or Skydive U certified. The same can be said for students that go through either course. Some will be great coaches and some won’t. Attitude accounts for a lot as well as a competent skill set. The skydive U course IMO has a higher standard but IMO the USPA course does what it is designed to do which is to provide a resource for new jumpers to go from student status to an A license. Working with new students involve a pretty simple skydiving skill set that most coaches can demonstrate in either course. Skydive U shows some great ways to teach and it is certainly beneficial to use those methods; however, many new jumpers will benefit from a USPA coach. Put another way, if I have to teach math to someone learning calculus and I am a teaching assistant and not a math professor can I help them. Most likely I can help them even though I haven’t had the training of the college professor. What I am trying to convey is that a USPA coach does meet a certain standard and it is enough to help new students even though higher standards could be imposed. Thanks for the reply. I think the confusion came about with section 5-1.9.A.3 3 from the Sydiver's Competion Manual. If an infringement in the scoring formation of a block sequence is carried into the inter, this will be considered as one infringement only, provided that the intent of the inter requirements for the next formation is clearly presented and no other infringement occurs in the inter. However, since no correct formation was ever presented there should be no points awarded and I agree with you the rules are pretty clear. If on block 2 (Side body donut to side flake donut) an infringement occured due to a wrong grip on the donut will any points be awarded since technically no correct formation was built or will one point be given if the inter and the side flake donut were completed even though one person had an incorrect grip. This question came up at our last meet and two very experienced competitors had two very different answers. No one was a 4-way judge and so I am trying to get some feedback since the rules are vague. The optima does not auto turn off. It is set up more or less like a watch. It automatically sets itself to zero where ever you are and never needs to be touched until the battery starts to lose power. It is pretty damn convenient

Wow Andrea, Great news and congrats!!!!! He is one lucky man even if he probably doesn't understand the powers that you wield as a greenie

Hey Ozzy13, The Skydive U coaches course has higher standards than the USPA course. The Skydive U course requires video of certain manuvers in freefall ie so many points of a specified sequence in order to show proficiency. Off the top of my head I seem to remember 10-15 required skydives. Many USPA coaches would not be able to meet those requirements. Of course there are many USPA coaches that could meet the same requirement. All of the requirements are in the Skydive U packet that you should have. Knot slippage on Reserve Closing Loop, BUT only on MY Jav
JustChuteMeNow replied to ZigZagMarquis's topic in Gear and Rigging
The cypress manual calls for a double overhand knot (which is the first part of a surgeons knot) and then another overhand knot to lock the first ones in place. I also finger trap the crpress loop all the way down to where I do the knot. I prestretch the knot by placing the loop in the leg of my sewing machine and this allows me to get some great leverage for the prestretch. I have not had a knot come loose yet doing this. I did have problems when I just tried to use a screwdriver and my hand for the prestretch. Like you said blah blah blah there are many ways to ensure the correct length blah blah blah Think of how stupid the average person is and realize that statistically half of them are stupider than that. -
Hell yeah. I love to bike and living in Iowa we have one of the premier biking events in the world called RAGBRAI. Come do it some time; it is a blast. Here is a clicky to my riding team for RAGBRAI. RAGBRAI is like a Mardi Gras on wheels and like I said it is a fun ride. Last year we went right by a DZ and several jumpers on the ride were able to make a jump together. Sherry's suits are great and as a rigger, I pay attention to sewing intricacies. These suits are solid. I ordered a two piece suit and both the top and the bottom fit perfectly the first time. It even arrived early. Sherry helped me decide what type of suit and pattern that I wanted and her suggestions were again perfect. If you want a quality suit from a person that is easy to work with, get a firefly suit.

So why would the chicken cross the road anyway?

What's the difference between containers?
JustChuteMeNow replied to dweeb's topic in Gear and Rigging
I will try and answer some of your questions. Both the Mirage and the Infinity are good rigs and both manufacturers have information on their web sites regarding container size and compatability with reserves and mains. This would be a great starting point. Most containers can go up or down a canopy size with very little problems but when people try and put a canopy a little too big or a little too small in a container it can create a malfunction as the incident reports can attest. It certainly won't always cause a malfunction and many jumpers will continue to operate their gear outside of the recommended and tested configuration. Hey Andrea, Thanks for the reminder. Normally I would need it but this Mother's day I actually knew it.

Just follow your master rigger's advice!?
JustChuteMeNow replied to UnusualAttitude's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I am a rigger but just like doctors there are good riggers and bad riggers. Most riggers just like doctors seek advice and second opionions if there are areas where they are unsure. In my opionion no one can learn how to be a truly knowledgable rigger by attending a one week crash course on rigging. That is not to say that people who get their rigging ticket through this method are bad riggers but that most would recognize that they still have a lot to learn. Hell most riggers are constantly learning and this is no different than any other profession. Riggers can and do make mistakes just like doctors and second opionions depending on the issue are good things. For example, most people don't need a second opionion from a doctor on minor medical advice but do get a second opionion on major medical advice. Gear advice is no different. Most jumpers wouldn't hestitate to follow advice concerning how to clean up sprite but might want a second opionion about other issues. However, getting a rigging ticket is a great way to start learning about every aspect of your gear and this certainly makes for a better understanding of this sport. As a side note, master riggers have at a minimum been rigging for 3 years and have done over 200 pack jobs. Most are very knowledgeable and know their stuff.
