  1. Properly implemented, socialism, or marxism (which eliminates a need for a government, which substantially increases liberty, collects taxes only to pay for, at a better price than what the individual can purchase himself, things the individual will purchase anyway. That is it eliminates profit from a market that has sufficient demand to not require profit to motivate innovations. I fail to understand how this is in more at odds with liberty than the exploitation of the poor majority by the rich minority that we call capitalism. Please explain. BTW, I completely agree with you that no country has ever implemented socialism or Marxism in its purest form, and the US long ago went away from a completely capitalist system. 2. Was in response tou you saying they wanted the Government to be secular...Just because you may WANT it to be secular does not mean it was not based on certain principals. There is a pretty big difference between founding a country on Christian beliefs (ie. Jesus as the Son of God, Creation, etc.) and Christian principles (ie. tolerance of those that are different than we are, pacifism, honesty, charity), which are shared by most all religions. You have stated both, but I am interested in which one you meant. Have you flipped, Ron, or just flopped? I understand why you like Shrub so well; he won't admit when he is wrong, either. 3. Don't take this to be a personal insult, but the idea that socialism is incompatable with liberty shows a poor understanding of both socialism and liberty. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

  7. There is a reason why states with higher taxes have better healthcare, education, etc. than their low tax counterparts. Well spent taxes buy, less expensively than an individual would otherwise have to pay, things that the individual would otherwise have to buy him/herself. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! 12. The fact that this incident happened in the UK would mean that US constitution has no bearing, but if the shirt were worn in the US, it would most likely be considered protected speech. I believe the case with the applicable precedent would be Cohen v California. Cohen wore into a courthouse in California a jacket that said "Fuck the Draft," and was charged and convicted of a crime. The Supreme Court ruled that The use of the word fuck was not obscene, as it did not appeal to prurient interests (contribute to sexual arousal) of a typical member of the community. The jacket also did not, and was very unlikely to, incite immediate violence. In order for a t-shirt saying "jesus is a cunt" to be deemed obscene, it would have to be arousing to an average member of the community. Only if it could be argued that "jesus is a cunt" would have an extremely high liklihood of inciting immediate violence, would wearing such a shirt not be protected by the first amendment. That would be a very difficult argument to make, considering those most likely to be offended, devout Christians who believe and follow the message of Christ, should be among the least likely to be violent. That doesn't make the wearer any less of an ass, though. But that's not illegal. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

  23. First, I agree completely that military justice in a combat zone is and should be different than that a civilian judicial system. And morale should always be among the chief concerns of any good general, because even low morale can be used to your advantage (see Sun Tzu's concept of death ground), in some situations. Most of the time, though, high morale is better. As such, executing a captured spy is not necessarily the worst thing a commander could do, especially if it will significantly improve morale. I do believe, however, that such an execution, if done in front of cameras and press, should abide by by all applicable national and international law. But, I am looking at it through the eyes of history, and not trying to judge the man. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  24. For a job with no requirement for a degree for an entry level position, and with failry liberal hiring standards, (tempered with a fairly conservative training process), the military pays pretty well, compared to civilian jobs involving unskilled labor. I am not saying that our servicemen are unskilled (or all men), by the vast majority of "junior enlistment folks" got their job training after they joined, and it was paid for by Uncle Sam, so I believe it is a fair comparison. While some benefits are a joke, others are valuable, like food, quarters, medical. (breathe) Having said that, it is very difficult to put a price on the time of someone who is willing to risk life or limb for their country. (I would hazard to guess that their combat motivation is their immediate brothers in arms, and their loved ones back home, before thought of country comes to mind, at least under fire.) The current situation is not helped by this administration's lack of reasonable justification for the war in Iraq, and seems to mitigate the fact that civilians know what they are getting into before they sign the proverbial dotted line to become a member of our armed forces, and combat is part of the game they play. BTW, I think the Prof was comparing Shaq to the CEOs, and not soldiers in his brief job skills analysis, in the context of similar salaries. As in it would be a more effective argument to compare the pittance the soldiers are earning for their job well done, at least as far as their orders are concerned, and the poor job that many CEOs do for $everal million annually. I don't think he meant anything unfavorable by it, although it might have been a cheap shout at some incompetent CEOs. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  25. Nah, just tired of my posts being attacked because of who wrote them, and not because of what was written. I lose patience with the cons that don't bash us progressives all equally. One does not have to agree with the Constitution do acknowledge what it says. By the same token, one should not feel obligated to believe in a concept, just because it's laid out in the Constitution. Our Founding Fathers had the wisdom to understand the only constant is change, and so wrote a document that allows for that change. While some ideas might be rejected, others might be well received, and could justify amendments. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
