Isn't it obvious? Wouldn't it be nice if all doctors chose their profession because the truly loved what they did, and considered their talents not just a gift, but also a means of contribution back into society, without having to deal with the bozoes that are primarily concerned with their tee-time and country club membership. Or teachers that loved to teach and learn and promote independant thought, without having to deal with the ones that are there for the retirement benefits and the summer vacations. People are far more productive when they are passionate about what they do. Removal of profit changes the motivation to get into the industry, but that change is not necessarily a bad thing. If you are asking if processed and gentically modified foods are a good idea, I would have to admit that they are not the best ones to ever come along. I would much rather eat healthy food, that lacks all the "innovations." Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

While profit may be a good motivator in these industries, it is an unnecessary one, due to the nearly universal demand. That is my point. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

Are we becoming what we are supposedly fighting against

Considering Shrub's adminastration, prior to 9-11-01 specifically stated that Iraq did not have WMD, I don't think any delay would have helped, only an honest President. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials! -
Militants in Iraq believe democracy is "un-Islamic"??!!

Except Shrub wanted to give the majority of the tax money back to the wealthy, who will save some of it, putting less money back into the economy than if he had given all the money back to the poor, who would have spent nearly all of it, which would have eventually still resulted in profits for corporate shareholders, only a little bit later. Shrub's plan does nothing but increase the disparity of wealth between the rich and the poor, which ironically, is the very thing that increases the liklihood of socialism ever being implemented in this country. I am well aware of investment risks. Again, I am not completely against Capitalism, I merely acknowledge the fact that it is not best suited for all industries. Nor do I believe socialism is suited to all industries. I do believe that a wise combination of the two could draw upon the strengths of both systems, while also helping to eliminate each system's weaknesses. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! Are we becoming what we are supposedly fighting against

The fact that we invaded Iraq without regard to those strong objections from either side makes me wonder if the answer is quite that easy, or even no. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials! -
Not bitching, just acknowledging an earlier post that in some local job markets, it can be nearly impossible to find work. I have loans, and will get through it, but it would be nice to find a job to help ease the future financial burden. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

So you are saying I do not have a good work ethic or good references? That's dangerously close to a personal attack, Ron. And you may find this hard to believe, but Z-Hills is way too far for me to commute practically. Nor is relocating for a job practical while I attend classes. Math tutoring available. The other 499 sides are also covered on http://news.google.com. They are not all that different than NPR, only mostly less detailed. Perhaps if the media is hard on the right side (I believe the majority of the media is right biased.) maybe its because lately, the right has really been screwing up, and it is honest reporting, rather than bias. Personally, I wish the media would stop treating Shrub with kid gloves, and be objective about just how badly he has been doing his job. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! Before capitalism came to America, we had skilled craftsman. Along came Henry Ford with his assembly line, and suddenly there was minimal need for skill, thus more competition for any given job. Where workers had once sold the fruits of their own labors to earn their living, they now are paid less for their time, so that a middleman, who contributes only capital, but no work, can make a profit. I'm not arguing that Capitalism is 100% evil. It's not. For example, I would oppose nationalization of parachute equipment manufacturers. The demand for skydiving equipment is so low compared to the size of the nation, it would bog down in bureacracy, with little to no application of advances in technology. Profit currently drives the system so we can fly extremes and velocities, if we want. However, that same profit in healthcare, or education, is nothing more than a drain on society. The demand for services is nearly equal to the national population, so there is no need for additional market motivation. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

What risk are you referring to? Do you think suddenly people will completely stop getting sick and being injured? Are we going to eliminate the need for education? What risk is there for the investors? Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

Lots of things did not help the Depression. That does not mean that they single handedly caused the Depression. It can also be argued that financed consumer goods such as cars contributed significantly to the Depression. that does not make it the underlying cause. The fact of the matter is the Depression was caused because people quit spending. When someone saves a dollar, instead of spending it, it costs the economy seven. When no one spends due to a fear of job loss, the actions, or, more accurately, the lack of action, cause the very unemployment that is feared. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! Like I said, a desire and capacity to learn must be demonstrated by the student. You do raise a good point, however, that we do not need lots of advanced degrees in just any subject; certainly some fields have greater potential to benefit society than others. I don't think that we would be overwhelmed by a bunch of underwater basket weaving PhDs, though. How many insurance companies are you invested in, policies aside? Premiums + interest - payouts = profit. Why the need for profit? Good health is motivation enough for advances in healthcare. I am not saying you would be better off without insurance in our current system, but rather that our current system is broken, and suits the needs of the population inefficiently at best. But having an HMO does not guarantee necessary healthcare if the HMO considers it prohibitively expensive. I have always believed an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, but I will happily listen to both of your arguments. That goes against everything I have read by even conservative economists. Something that will pay my rent, food, transportation expenses, as well as a small additional amount to cover other expenses, such as clothing or medicinal expenses. The exact amount necessary depends on where I am living. I wish it were that easy, but a substantial percentage of my classes only have one section available, even with early registartion (ie not due to my own procrastination). For example, the only Calculus III class available at my school is an early-mid morning section, while the only differential equations class available is an evening class. If I could schedule my classes to be more work friendly, I would, but that is not currently an option. That is easy to say, but the current job market just does not support that idea. I have an excellent work ethic, and have good references from previous supervisors, but that is not enough. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

The profit of capitalism comes from workers working for wages, rather than owning the fruits of their labor. The wages are worth less. That is what makes it capitalism. Those wiyth the capital hire those without capital (workers) at a cost that, when added to the profit, equals the value of the labor. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! What I said was: If you quote me, please do not do it out of context. NPR is argued to be conservative by one side (Natinalist Public Radio) and liberal by the other, which makes it appear to be overall unbiased. When tempered with hundreds of other news sources on http://news.google.com then a liberal slant can hardly be credibly argued. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

I've yet to find anyone willing to hire a thirty-something college student at a living wage and the flexibility necessary to work around my school schedule. Especially in Florida. And while I go to school, I am ineligible for unemployment benefits because I am not available to work any hours 24/7. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

It is also worth noting that the assistance that is given is given for the benefit of those that are still working, and not for those that are unemployed. If the unemployed do not continue contributing money to the economy, far more money is lost than what is being paid in assistance. The general rule of thumb is that each dollar spent ultimately contributes seven dollars to the economy. We give assistance so that the economy doesn't lose those seven dollars, which would undoubtedly contribute to even more unemployment. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! Whether one chooses to get a PhD or not has little bearing on the fact thatr the community is better off having more Phds. School is not for everyone, but those that show desire and capacity to learn should not be held back due to lack of funds. That is not paying doctors when you are well. Health insurance only allows the rich to profit from the poor health of the population. Doctors don't see any of that money until you are no longer well, which provides no motivation to keep you well. Why do you think the current system focuses on treating diseases instead of curing them? Since the civil war era, until FDR's adminastration, we were, for all practical purposes, a strictly capitalist economy. The Great Depression and the subsequent recovery showed us that it is necessary to temper capitalism with socialist safeguards in order to ensure a healthy economy. Math tutoring available. First, I should say that it is difficult to discuss socialism without also discussing capitalism, as they are two sides of a single coin. As far as things that everyone would buy anyway, I am referring primarily to education, which benefits everyone in the community, and not just the person in school; healthcare, as a healthy population is beneficial to the entire community (Have you ever stopped to think just how ludicrous it is for us to pay our doctors when we are unhealthy, instead of when we are healthy? Where is the incentive for preventative medicine?); food and shelter, for same reasons as healthcare. Currently, my tax dollars are financing a war I believe to be unjustified, poorly planned, and a threat to humanity and peace. By your logic, which I do not altogether disagree with, this is at odds with my liberty. As to your objection to forcing people to pay, that is a valid point, but I believe that when it can be demonstrated that tax monies are being spent wisely, few people would object. Personally, I do not believe either Capitalist system or a Socialist system, if implemented as designed, would work. (History has proven this with Capitalism.) I believe a combination of the two is necessary to be successful. Some industries will thrive, due completely to demand, without a need for profit, while others rely on profit as a motivating factor. If I had to choose between the two, I believe socialism to be the (far) lesser of the two evils. {Einstein quotes from The Einstein Scrapbook by Ze'ev Rosenkranz (c) 1998, 2002 The Jewish National & University Library, Jerusalem, The Johns Hopkins University Press} For those unaware, Einstein's second love, after science, was politics.
