Any idea for what model gun it would have been used to train for? Or was the army's mentallity back then that all rifles pretty much worked the same? Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

Good, I have a question for the firearm afficionados in SC. I own an old Mossberg .22 cal military (I think) rifle. It is bolt action, with a seven shot clip. The front sight is what I would consider a normal style sight for most any .22. The rear sight is an aperture sight, which flips open either up, or from the side, I don't remember which, and don't have the weapon in this state, so I can't look. I beleive it is set up for a sling, but has not had one since I inherited it. It is a rather heavy rifle, and has a wooden stock that ends only 3-4 inches short of the end on the barrel. My dad remembers my grandfather having it when he (my dad) was a young kid, which would have been about fifty years ago. It has "Property of U.S. Government" stamped in the barrel, so I've always assumed it was purchsed as surplus. I am trying to figure out exactly what this rifle was used for (generally speaking). I don't remember ever reading about soldiers being issued .22 caliber rifles during WWII, but it seems I have heard of basic trainees firing .22 caliber training rifles as late as the Viet Nam War in BT, so I am inclined to believe it was a training rifle of some sort. Does anybody know? Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

Do the moderators play favorites in deciding who to ban?

Sorry, but I've not seen the movie. I do hope you don't think I seriously thought nightingale had an abrasive tone. I've honestly never heard any rude or abrasive dialog from her at all, especially compared to some of us that have been warned and/or banned. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! You must have missed all the news stories of eligible voters being prged from the registers. Or last minute polling place changes made in predominately Democratic precincts. You can't recount votes that were not able to be made, and accounted for far more votes than the narrow margin Shrub "won" by. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

If Bush weren't currently on his third reason for the war, your argument might be valid, but he has done nothing but change his position to spin mistakes in Iraq positively. To suggest he had honorable intentions completely disregards the fact that helied about reasons to go to war in the first place. Instead, he had to use scare tactics against Americans with threats of imminent attack by WMD, which his adminastration had previously acknowledged did not likely exist in Iraq. I'm wondering why I should be ashamed for not remaining quiet as my government f___s up. It takes integrity to dissent, but only fear to be complacent. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! Not bait and switch, just sticking to topic. Here's an example from 2002 in FL http://www.csl.sri.com/users/neumann/insiderisks.html#149 You do, however seem to be dodging the election irregularities that overwhelmingly favor your favorite party. Let's try to stick to topic, shall we? You call me an extremist. I have to ask, can you think of a single great moderate idea in history? Today's radicals hold the views of tomorrows conventionalists. So, coming from a conventionalist as yourself, I will take that as a compliment. As for Iraq's situation, We can't fix Shrub's mistake within the month, but as someone on here said, Iraq's future has to begin somewhere. I just believe touting it as a victory is total BS. We are doing nothing but trying to fix the mess we made. I do think that the Iraqi people should be the ones that decide their future, but it has to be of their own accord. Just because we give the oppurtunity to vote, if a substantial percentage of their eligible population abstains, due to fear (likely) or boycott (self-defeating), then the election loses objective fairness, which is the goal of a democratic government, correct? To imply that we have done Iraq a favor by destroying their country and killing thousands of the civilians for whom we claimed we were invading, that is nothing short of apalling, from my perspective. There may in fact be some good come out of this situation, but there was nothing good or just about our invasion. It is a low point in U.S. history, not something to speak of proudly. I overlooked the typo, actually. Perhaps I should rephrase my question. If you were going to replace "tha[t]" with a noun, what would that noun be? I am not clear wht you are referring to with that particular pronoun. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

What is what we have now? (serious question, I need more than a pronoun for definition, no offense) As for the election fraud in this country, could you show me where it has favored the Democratic party? I'm not saying that the Democrats are all noble, but your's is the first accusation of Democrat election fraud that I've heard, at least in recent years. There are lots of cases where the "error" favors the Republicans, especially when there is solely Republican oversight of the election. For more info, check out http://blackboxvoting.org or http://www.votersunite.org/electionproblems.asp?sort=date&selectstate=FL&selectproblemtype=ALL This sounds like the same argument that claims dissent is unpatriotic, or unAmerican. If stopping civil war were your concern, why remove SH at all? He was keeping that from breaking out. Do I not have a right, as a citizen and a veteran, to expect my county to have a just foreign policy, and to not meddle in other nation's affairs for profit? I am an idealist, which differs from a realist by understanding that there are alternatives to the current status quo. Okay. Turn command authority In Iraq over to the U.N. preferrably, accompanied by an apology from Shrub to, primarily the Iraqi people, and secondly to the international community, for threatening hopes of world peace and increasing global terrorism. Then remove the veto power from the permanent members of the Security Council, and give it to the General Assembly. Next, join the World Court. That would be a good start, anyway, and would remove from the insurgents (read enemy soldiers), as well as the rest of the international community, the ability to use anti-American sentiment as a rallying flag. Of course it is not the status quo, and considering the general tendancy against conscious change, such improvements are unlikely to be implemented. Yet when such international observers as the Carter Foundation bring our attention to our own obsticles to free elections, you dismiss them as unimportant. After all, not many election outcomes have changed with recounts. I am having little difficulty seeing reality, but there are many on the right who refuse to open their eyes to it, simply because the status quo favors their candidates. Math tutoring available. So you are in favor of election fraud as long as there is an appearance of fair elections? I don't understand. Isn't that what Iraq already had? "Where a government has come into power through some form of popular vote, fraudulent or not, and maintains at least an appearance of constitutional legality, the guerrilla outbreak cannot be promoted, since the possibilities of peaceful struggle have not yet been exhausted". - Ernesto Che Guevara Math tutoring available. I'm not trying to stir up trouble, but is there somewhere where all the clarifications that have been posted can be found in a single place? I respect the mods, and the job they do, even if I do not always agree with their decisions. I have been given warnings for personal attacksthat, while they may not have been intended that way, could easily be interpreted as such, so the warning was wholly justified. On the other hand, I do not understand Kallend's offense that resulted in his temporary banning, although I admittedly do not have all the facts, and am not trying to pass judgement. If this county hadn't had MAJOR voting discrepancies for two consecutive presidential elections, you would have a point. We know in hindsight that Shrub did not win FL in 2000, so any re-election as an incumbent is inherently fraudulent. Election fraud is wrong, whether it changes the outcome of the election or not. It would be hypocritical to disagree with that premise, while simultaneously supporting democracy as a superior form of government. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! I just don't think it is possible to hold "free" elections in such a climate of violence. If the violence is quelled, then democracy has a chance to take root. The fact is that the violence has not been quelled, and it is unlikely to be before the national elections. As far as our standard of free election, the Carter Foundation (I think that's the name) has gone on record, prior to the 2004 election, as saying that conditions necessary for fair elections do not exist in florida. One of the primary reasons given was the lack of non-partisan election oversight. Stalin was correct. Voters decide nothing. Those that count the votes decide everything. Math tutoring available. I suppose it would be possible to be more rascist, but certainly not admirable. It has nothing to do with pride. I am not terribly bothered by my unemployment, as it does offer oppurtunities I would not otherwise have, But I would take a job in a second, provided it will not have a detrimental effect on my studies, which are far mor important in the long-term. I can't fathom how anyone can realistically consider that refusal to work. An old Chinese proverb says: If you are planning for a year, plant rice. If you are planning for a decade, plant trees. If you are planting for a lifetime, get an education. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

That is an assumption you have made, not a statement I have made. Even poor paying jobs are hard to come by around here, especially for people who are not available M-F during the day. Of course, if you have employment leads, feel free to share. But your attacks are quite unproductive. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

Inability should not be confused with unwillingness. Healthcare costs lots of money, and is a significant drain on my income even when I am available to work 40-60 hrs a week. The jobs simply are not available here. But, as I am always looking, if you know of an employment lead, I will enthusiastically look into it. Careful, the mods are really cracking down on the personal insults. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

Okay, I asked for an example, you provided one. Thanks. I do have to question whether or not we can compare those two cultures. After all, the hostlities were over when we installed democracyu in Japan. Also, honor played a tremendous part in their culture. When they gave an unconditional surrender, it meant exactly that, so we really didn't force democracy on them, but rather they willingly and peacefully accepted it, something unlikely to happen in Iraq.
