  1. Substantial: of considerable size and worth. Notice it does not specify "over half." I've not quantified it into an exact number or percentage. I've dealt with the police on too many occasions to try and do so in retrospect. See above before you twist my words any further, please. significant amount does not equate to majority. Not naive, just realistic. You might want to try a more realistic analogy. As well, cops also like to get involved when no none summoned them. It sure would be a shame to let someone get away with driving while black, wouldn't it. It's a dangerous job. So is being a tandem instructor. If you a cop (or TI) is not comfortable with the danger, then they should find a new line of work, not bitch and whine about how dangerous it is. Lot's of things cause stress. Not just being a cop. Have you ever had to clear a high speed reserve malfunction? No, I look for non-violent ways to settle disputes and deal with stress. Unfortunately, such situations are not always settles peacefully. Also unfortunately, sometimes it is the police that escalate the situation to violence. If they only appeared when called, cops wouldn't be such a problem. Unfortunately, that is not the case. All to often they look for reasons to take people to jail instead of letting peaceful folks be. An admirable goal in any job. unfortunately, too many cops (one is too many) are all to eager to pre-emptively hurt someone because they are too scared of what might happen. That would make you different than a good number of cops. Fortunately, some judges still recognize the necessity for search warrants. Don't like the job, find something else. Don't bitch about how dangerous it is. Do you really believe there is no reason for people being distrustful of the police? That is pretty naive. Better advice would be to know and exercise your rights. One of the people I used to live with was, at the time, freshly off the force. He openly admitted that most people that are in jail are there because they didn't know their rights. He left because he was fed up with the lack of integrity of his coworkers. As I said, I do not look for violence to solve problems. Violence causes problems. As for respect, I always give any officer the benefit of the doubt that they are one of the good guys when I first interact with them. I've met three that really were good guys. Two were Highway Patrol, and one was a county sheriff's deputy. I've also had many indifferent interactions with the police. However, I've had to deal with some real bozos with badges, also. A significant number of them (not a tiny minority). In fairness, I believe good cops probably outnumber poor cops. However, since good cops don't mess with civilians just for the sake of messing with civilians, they don't interact with the public as often, and are under represented in public opinion. 2. Over a period of time, in a large population, yes, it means we have no control. At the individual level that control may exist in some people, but it is unrealistic to expect that control to exist in all people. Like when Clinton got a blowjob? Math tutoring available. 4. We are wired to like sex. We're wired to like sex a lot. Maybe more than anything else. Orgasms feel good for a reason. The only thing we have to do before we die is pass on our genetic code. If we fail to do that, we are evolutionary failures, no matter how great our contributions to society. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  5. Not guilty would be a more accurate phrase than innocent, but yes, I do not assume guilt without evidence. If a cop scuffles with a civilian, I do not automatically assume guilt on the part of the officer. Nor do I automatically assume guilt on the part of the suspect. Without evidence I withhold judgement. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  6. The reason we have not had this conversation in person has much more to do with the fact we have never met in person than me not having the courage to express my opinion up close and personal. However, when communicating with people from all over the world, it is much easier to use the internet than to meet up at a pub. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  7. If a cop shoots a suspect, and that suspect shot first, the cop is justified. If there is no justification for the cop to use lethal force, and he does, that cop should face charges. I've had enough experience with the police to know that a substantial portion of the time, they cause their own problems. Maybe I'm cynical, or maybe I'm just a realist, but when I hear cop vs someone else, I no longer assume someone else is guilty until I see evidence of it. This is the United States, not a television police drama cleverly crafted so that the protagonist is always right and always wins in a nice hour time frame. It's truly a shame that poor cops are not culled from the force, but as long as that appears to be the case, I do not automatically assume to police to be in the right. Maybe I missed the point of the analogy, or maybe you don't understand why it is so important to presume innocence until guilt is proven beyond a reasonable doubt. Math tutoring available. 8. I haven't had a chance to play with the MBPro, but I've played with the small (13"?) MB, and compared it dimensionally to my iBook 12.1" The MB has a larger screen aspect ratio. my 12" screen is taller than the 13" screen. I may actually have more screen real estate with my 12" screen. The point is, the 13" MB isn't really bigger than the 12" iBook; it's wide screen as opposed to ~4:3. I like the removable drive idea. That would be handy. I don't use my optical drive much either. The extra battery life would be nice. What kind of options does a separate graphics card open up? I don't use my button on my trackpad. I would be content being able to make it a right click in preferences, while trackpad taps remain left clicks. CTRL click doesn't bother me, though. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! 9. So now objective posts are the same as "x-file conspiracy theories?" If you disagree with my posts, you should attack the post. What "conspiracy theories" have I presented, specifically? If you don't like how your words are interpreted, perhaps you should choose them more carefully. I do not intentionally twist them, I can assure you. If you post something I disagree with, I'm likely to call you on it, but I've no need or intention of twisting your words. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  10. As deserving of the protections of the justice system as someone who was arrested for jaywalking. Suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty. Police officers are not the judge, juror or executioner. If they cannot perform their duties without passion or prejudice, they should find a different line of work. Math tutoring available. 12. It would be very difficult to draw a conclusion unless I had seen everything that led up to the attack. A badge in and of itself does not make its bearer a good guy or a bad guy. 13. I was disappointed to see that Apple eliminated the 12" screen size from their notebook lineup. However, I was pleased to see they brought the Firewire 800 port back for the MacBook Pro. (IMO, it was a boneheaded decision to eliminate the port in the first place.) All in all, I can't wait until I can upgrade my iBook. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! 16. Like I previously posted. I can understand the handler going straight to helping the dog. It's still the wrong decision, but I can understand the emotional charge. However, in this particular situation, no attempt was made to give the suspect medical attention in a timely manner by any of the cops, at least before the video ended. That does not speak highly of the officers involved, nor those who are defending their inaction. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  17. How can we prove that anyone has the qualifications to run this country? The best and the brightest just don't run. So the next election will turn out just like 2004, where we have to choose between two power hungry bottom feeders who serve primarily as bad examples. I agree with Wendy's post from a few days ago saying billvon should run (I think she made the post in jest.). He's a +3*sigma type of guy. Plus, a non career politician would be a refreshing change in the Whitehouse. I think we would have a very difficult time convincing billvon that it is a good idea, however. I can't really blame anyone for not wanting to campaign for president. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

  20. She's the closest thing we've had to a decent president in the past 25 years. Might as well let her have her old job back. Oh, c'mon. 21. Nice blatant misrepresentation of my post. It not about holding criminals in high or low regard. It's about not minimizing the value of human life just because it's not mine or because I don't agree with the actions of that person. It's not my place to be judgmental. Math tutoring available. 22. Fred had been a religious man who was in the hospital, near death. The family called their preacher to stand with them. As the preacher stood next to the bed, Fred's condition appeared to deteriorate and he motioned frantically for something to write on. The pastor lovingly handed him a pen and a piece of paper, and Fred used his last bit of energy to scribble a note, then he died. The preacher thought it best not to look at the note at that time, so he placed it in his jacket pocket. At the funeral, as he was finishing the message, he realised that he was wearing the same jacket that he was wearing when Fred died. He said, "You know, Fred handed me a note just before he died. I haven't looked at it, but knowing Fred, I'm sure there's a word of inspiration there for us all." He opened the note, and read out loud, "Hey, you're standing on my oxygen tube!"
