  1. Everybody is losing in this war. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  2. Do you even read my posts? I did. To paraphrase, you suggested rights are conditional. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  3. If they cannot perform their duties within the guidelines of the Constitution and laws, they have no business having a badge. Exercising my rights should not imply guilt in any way. LMAO. You've never been hassled by cops, have you? It doesn't work like that. First off, if you speak, you've waived his/her right to remain silence. I'm not trying to scheme a paycheck from the local tax revenue. I want to be able to exercise my rights with an assumption of guilt. That's how it's supposed to work in free countries. Yes, I should be able to exercise all my rights, fully, everytime, no matter what. That's why they are called rights. I'm FAR more likely to end up in handcuffs by not exercising my rights. Much better not to go to jail to start out with, IMO. That is most probable if I exercise all my rights. Awfully judgmental aren't you? My record's clean (minor traffic violations not withstanding). I don't do anything to cause problems. That doesn't mean I don't get hassled by Johnny Law for whatever reason he might conjure up. A soldier of all people should not judge a civilian for exercising his rights. Or is that whole "defend the Constitution" oath just lip service? Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! 4. Could someone please tell me what "it" is? What exactly is the mission in Iraq? As far as the "cowards way out," it's called not chasing lost costs. You don't decide your future actions with intent to justify your previous actions. Act for the future, not the past. When was the last time we successfully "built a nation" that was not our own? 6. AIR-TCHR SKY-TCHR Disclaimer: Responding to this thread in no way implies I claim to be smart. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  7. The hand grenade is about the only weapon that Hollywood doesn't exaggerate about. In fact, Hollywood tends to downplay the true explosive power of a grenade. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  8. I've thus far avoided most summer/winter classes. I have mixed emotions about that much information in such a short amount of time. It's great as long as you don't let yourself get behind, because there's not enough time to forget what you've learned. If you fall behind, it can be brutal trying to catch back up. Good luck! You'll do fine, I'm sure.
  9. 18 units, 5 classes - Advanced Comp, Spanish, Public Speaking, US History the second half, and Intermediate Algebra. It's not going to be hard, but it will be a lot of homework... It does sound like a lot of homework. Good luck. IIRC, my most intimidating semester (19 hrs: Univ. Physics I, Bio I, Trig, Cultural Arts and GenPsych) resulted in my best single semester GPA. I hope the same happens for you.

  12. I agree, this has been the semester from hell. I'm so glad it is over. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  13. A better question: How is exercising my rights asking for a negative reaction from the police? Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  14. I don't think the probabilities would change. I think most (high speed) reserve mals would result in death, whether they happened to a single person or various jumpers. Okay, I misunderstood. It is neither the first time nor the last, I'm sure. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  15. Which researchers would those be? Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  16. My position has been very consistent. No. I haven't even claimed the cops should be tried, yet. However, based on the evidence that has thus far been presented, which is admittedly incomplete, the cops were in the wrong in this situation, for more than a single reason. I never try to give a cop a reason to be a dick. Nor do I voluntarily give up my rights. I also will not ignore evidence just so I can have a warm fuzzy feeling about the police. 17. I think we have to agree to disagree here. I believe your experience as a cop has given you a biased viewpoint. How many different reserve malfunctions have you trained for? Can you list them? Trust me, it was nothing I'd ever heard about or trained for. There are definitely an infinite number of possibilities up there. I think you are underestimating the probability of surviving multiple reserve malfunctions. I consider myself to be very, very lucky to have walked away from one, and that was only because I maintained a presence of mind and didn't panic, and I was fortunate enough for my first attempt to fix the situation worked. Several such malfunctions in a month would kill nearly everyone, no matter how good they are or how well they think under pressure. I don't buy that typical police work, even in Detroit after 11pm, is as dangerous or stressful as a high speed reserve malfunction. A main mal, probably. I've no problem with police being cautious. Caution is a good thing. Over aggressiveness is not a good thing. Over aggressiveness is a bad thing. It often causes people to be hurt or killed unnecessarily. Math tutoring available. 18. IMO, that's actually an additional qualification, but I understand your point. We are very unlikely to see Gen. Powell in the Oval Office. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  19. Someone posted previously in this thread that SOP for NYPD is there must be another weapon besides the vehicle to justify deadly force. Besides, it hasn't been shown that the three gentlemen who were shot were trying to run anyone over. I haven't seen any evidence suggesting they knew the gunmen were cops, or that they intentionally tried to run any of the gunmen down. So far the evidence indicates the cops were in the wrong. 20. I'm not sure Powell couldn't pull it off in 2008, depending on how he is able to (for lack of a better term) spin his UN presentation during the run up to the Iraq invasion. Even with that presentation, he has the appearance of being the only "good guy" in the current administration, IMO. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  21. It would be that simple if there had been a weapon found. Thus far it appears to exist only in the stories of the (intoxicated) cops. Until such weapon is found, the cops were not defending themselves. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  22. I am absolutely serious. I believe "we think he might be dangerous" is rarely, if ever, a proper justification for deadly force. Considering the police were yelling for him to drop the gun, they believed he is dangerous, which is well above they thought he might be dangerous..... And he claimed to have a gun. However, I never saw the gun. That doesn't mean he didn't have one, but I looked and didn't see it. It very well could have been a case of "suicide by police." No comments on how the video has been altered? That the video and audio are off is not indicative of altered video when viewing such videos over the internet, or even a LAN. However, I'm not going to watch a man die over and over just to prove/disprove a point in an internet forum. Once was more than enough. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! 23. I originally said substantial. Let's go with that. In this context, however, they are synonymous, so it doesn't really matter. Neither implies a majority. I did not quantify any further than substantial/significant because I have not kept statistical records. I can say for sure that I have had three positive encounters with the police. Many more negative, and many more indifferent. The negative and indifferent are very roughly equal. Perspective is everything. You were a cop, I've dealt with a lot of cops. Both are valid experiences that allow us to draw conclusions not based in ignorance. Having never been to Detroit, I cannot comment on their police force. However, I have been to a number of different locales. Cops are not exactly the same from one place to another. For example, the worst cops I've ever encountered in terms with messing with people without provocation were Key West's "finest." On the other end of the spectrum, I've never seen anything but the utmost professionalism from the Missouri Highway Patrol. Most other cops I've encountered are somewhere in between those extremes. Don't believe for a second that your experience is any more valid than my experience. No, high speed RESERVE malfunction. It ain't just another mal. Somehow I doubt this. Compared to a main malfunction, maybe probably. Compared to a high speed reserve malfunction, all bets are off. We both are limited by only anecdotal evidence based on personal experience. This is not the same (nor have I intended to claim it was the same) as statistical evidence. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

  25. Everytime I get a chance, I talk to the troops that were over there. Amost 100% agree we are doing the right thing. Who am I to argue with the guys whose butts are on the line? I also take the opportunity to talk to returning troops when possible. So far I have heard of only one who thought that we should be over there, and that things were going well. And that one was from very early in the invasion. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
