"Pete the Pup" is what we called this 16 year old kid that started skydiving at Baldwin in 1979 or 80. Yey Pup! Pete here may remember John Killdahl who jumped a Dactyl for many years. I do recall him doing some CRW with it. John was also one of the early camera guys I can remember. I'd love to get in touch with him to see some of the old shots he took of us. In the good ol days, we had to be warry of every asshat that showed up at a DZ wanting to jump. We had no way of knowing what stupididty they were capable of. Those days are gone... deal with it. Maybe, maybe not. We are the USPA, remember. Members need to complain. An S&TA needs to talk to an RD. The RD can petition the USPA. If there are enough complaints, then maybe. It's not up to me. As I understand it, you have to be packing under the direct supervision of a qualified rigger. (too lazy to look it up in the SIM) If you met that standard and have a rigger that ok's it, I'd be ok with it if I wasn't planning on packing for myself. Which, I usually do. Two possible answers come to mind: 1) Then why have "state records"? 2) Why do people root for their home football or home soccer team? Because a bit of friendly competition is fun. There is more to this... Alot of us may never get good enough to break a world record. Being part of a State Record attempt (especially an organized one) is a challeng, a learning tool, and a stepping stone to bigger things. There is real value here. Also, Outside Expertise, brought in to organize, train, teach, participate, even compete for slots, help to raise the bar for all of us. A little heathy competition only makes us better. If you get benched at a bigway event, it's not a disgrace. It's a challenge for you to get better. Plus, often it's a safety net to keep it safe.
