And that right there is really the point. I couldn't agree more that the government should get out of the marriage business altogether and only recognize civil unions. I would fully support making that change. I don't see that happening anytime soon and until it does then everyone needs to be treated equally. I think what she is saying (Wendy forgive me if I am wrong) and what I would agree with is the fact that just because she personally would think that some people don't deserve to live, that doesn't me she thinks the government or legal system should be killing people. You can say the same for free speech. There are some people who's words make my blood boil and I would love nothing more than to have the law shut them up, but I don't think the government should be restricting speech so I bite my tongue and let them say what they will say. In the case of capital punishment there is just too much of a chance for failure within the system to risk executing someone. That doesn't mean they should be set free, it just means that we shouldn't be in the business of killing people. It also doesn't mean that I wouldn't like to see that person killed, it just means that I don't think that a civilized society should execute people. Lock them up sure but at least if we find out that they were wrongly convicted we can let them out. Killing em, well, unless they were only mostly dead, you just can't reverse that. I don't think you will find many that will deny that it has become that. There are just many that feel that it goes against the principles that this country was actually founded on and it disgusts us to see the fanatics trying to push us further and further towards a "christian taliban" running the country. I don't see him saying that at all. It is torture either way so I guess you can say that yes we do torture our own. We are doing it to teach them how to resist it when bad people do it to them. There is also the fact that they volunteer for that position in special ops and that is part of the training. They have the option to drop out if they don't like it. The people that we are doing it to for real didn't make that choice and don't have that option. I also know that both the military (certain branches) and other organizations often require that before someone is allowed to carry pepper spray they must submit to being sprayed with it. That is a requirement for the job that they chose (albeit a dumb one in my book). It doesn't mean that the military can walk around and spray anyone they want with pepper spray on a whim.
