Actually I think many kids are so bored by the end of the summer - sad, but true - that they can't wait to go back.

Sometimes a thread just dies of natural causes. If you're unlucky enough to be the last one to touch it, does that make you a killer?

There are bra jumps organised for this coming weekend at Target Skyports in the UK, in aid of The Lavender Trust (a breast cancer care charity). In addition to the girls (and boys) skydiving in lingerie, "it is hoped that there will be an attempt by a wing suit flyer to dock on a skydiver holding a double H cup Zero P Bra over his head." I think that's one for the 'gotta see' category...

Funny you should say that. I remember a team mate telling me in her drunken stupor she'd tried to stop the room spinning by using knee turns!

Luckily there's always cat food going spare.

Agreed! Hokey as hell, but as a representation of the joy of freefall - absolutely spot on.

I agree. And in spite of that site's assertion that the Sphynx is 'very robust' I don't like the idea of a mutant breed being encouraged when it results in a cat that's susceptible to cold and needs bathing. That negates two of the coolest things about cats! Madscape, from what I can make out allergic people are more susceptible to some cats than others, even within the same breed - and I know of people who've become immune to individual cats by actually living with them. Although your reaction sounds pretty extreme, so that's probably too much to hope for...

We regularly have sheep grazing on our landing area, so - nothing nice.

Also looks from the approach as though the pilot was (God forbid) trying to hit him, or more likely scare him. Why else would he dip a wing like that? If it had been emergency avoidance he'd surely have banked in the other direction. Does anyone know the context of that clip?

Funny how the word 'record' is becoming popular again because yeah, I associate it with big old vinyl disks. I have to admit I became a CD convert many years ago, just for the convenience (and now everyone else is downloading mp3s I'm old-fashioned again, damn it!) But recently at the Virgin Megastore I noticed there were vinyl copies of just about all the new albums. And I have to agree - there's nothing like the sound of the needle hitting the vinyl at the start of your favourite record. It's like the sound of turbine engines starting up. It's an anticipatory thrill...

Maybe the mortuary staff wanted to charge too much to prepare him for the chapel of rest. It must take enough work just to make a dead person look presentable from the neck up...

How do you explain Skydiving to whuffo friends?
MikeJD replied to GogglesnTeeth's topic in The Bonfire
Don't bother, unless they have another activity that they're passionate about and takes up most of their free time, in which case they'll probably get it anyway. Unfortunately a frightening number of people can't imagine anything in their weekend beyond sleeping, shopping and TV... -
What she said. I used to spout stuff about the drive to the dropzone being more dangerous than the jumping, but I've lost enough friends in the last few years that I don't say that any more. I would point out to your parents that, sad to say, most fatalities happen through carelessness. If they know you to be level-headed and responsible then that should help. But they'll probably only start to relax when you've been jumping for some time and you haven't suffered so much as a twisted ankle. So make that your goal!

Congratulations! And be thankful that toggle didn't detach during your flare. Happened to a friend of mine, and she was lucky that she just tumbled on landing and didn't hurt herself. Others have been less fortunate. Oh, and look at it this way - you handled your first cutaway just fine and you got to practise it under relatively easy conditions. Nice one!

Skydiving as a demonstration sport in the London 2012 Olympics?!
MikeJD replied to nigelh's topic in The Bonfire
You want to introduce skydiving the year the Olympics are held in the UK? People are going to come away from that saying, that's not a sport - it's a lot of sitting around on the ground bitching about the weather... -
You must have the stretchiest optic nerves in history.

Interesting Statistics of our industry
MikeJD replied to MikeTJumps's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
Some interesting figures in there. But I had to laugh at the age statistics - 20% of skydivers are aged 0 - 29. Wonder how many of those are aged 0? -
Funnily enough, I don't think that picture is a fake, or even originally a joke - it's just a more extreme version of this technique, which I found on a genuine cat care website: "You can resuscitate a drowned cat by holding it upside down by the hind legs and vigorously swinging it to and fro between your legs." Luckily I don't live anywhere near water, so unless either of my two fall into the toilet I'm happy to say I won't be having to do this!

My cat likes to lie on top of the TV too - I think because (when it's on) it's warm up there, and also because cats like to get between you and whatever is making you ignore them. She dangles her tail in front of the screen, which is a sure way of getting my attention.

Nice one! Although when I saw the title of your post, I thought you meant A for antenna. I was gonna say, that's a little keen...

That is a great shot. I was once looking at the moon through a telescope when a jet flew across it. Made me jump!
-
Her (or his) reaction should be the same as yours - glad that you proved you could deal with it, and the system works!

That snowman looks pretty floaty. I'm guessing the parachute is the heaviest thing about him.. Friends of mine did jump an inflatable doll a few years ago. Don't know who was supposed to hold onto her at break-off, but I think everyone endedup with a bit since she was instantly dismembered on exit!

I'm not particularly scared of spiders but I didn't enjoy feeling one run up my leg when I was in bed one night. I whipped off the covers and shook that sucker off - I couldn't kill one - but it took me a while to get back to sleep afterwards!
