  1. That link isn't working now. Anybody have one that does?
  2. Do most purpose-made bailout rigs have the deployment handle in the same place as a skydiving rig reserve handle? I took a trial glider flight last weekend and wore a bailout rig with that configuration. When being briefed, it took a couple of attempts for the instructor to get me to use my right hand! Had we had to bail out, I wonder which canopy I would have gone for first - the 'reserve', or the non-existent main? Whichever, I bet it would have ended up being a left-handed pull
  3. Andrea, I had a problem that sounds like yours - every morning when I started IE for the first time I got an advertising popup that Adaware wasn't detecting. The URL always started 'http://ads.x10.com...', so I did a search for files containing that text. Turned up two files, a dll and a cfg, both called 'Xoff'. I moved them into another area, and solved the problem. So I zapped those suckers and have been popup free ever since! You might want to try something like that. Erm... at your own risk, of course
  4. "After dropping the skydiver, the plane lands and is easily prepared for the next jump...simply recharge the plane in as little as 90 seconds and off it goes..." 90 seconds? Wow! Can the little guy pack that fast? Or does he come with multiple rigs?
  5. Lou, Thanks for your email on Saturday evening and to the other people who got in touch to pass on the bad news. I think the lack of posts so far is a reflection of the shock everyone is feeling. You know what an understatement it is to say that we've lost one of Headcorn's great characters - once we've got our heads around this there will be so many stories to remember him by. Condolences to his family and many friends. I am so sorry. Mike D.
  6. Five minutes to go. Four minutes...
  7. Agreed that there are some skydiving movies that cost a lot of money for not much content - and I won't buy them (ok, I have bought them, but only after agonising about it ). But the thing about blockbuster Hollywood movies is that the millions they cost to make - unless the film really bombed - has already been recouped at the cinema box office. Now all the producers of the DVD have to do is throw in a couple of crappy HBO 'making of' documentaries, add a director's commentary, produce a HUGE run of disks (thus keeping the cost down), sit back and watch the money roll in. And then in a couple of months release the 'special edition' and watch the money roll in again . I think it's safe to say that Warner Bros are making a lot more profit from Harry Potter than anyone will ever make from 'Out of the Blue'.
  8. And if the government wants to introduce a new UK public holiday, I'll be more than happy to 'give thanks'.
  9. Just another workin' day for us Brits...
  10. Just because it's easy to do doesn't make it right. Commercial skydiving and BASE videos and DVDs are expensive, like most purchases in those sports, because the market is small. I see making free copies for other people as taking a bite out of someone's livelihood, and making a mockery of the time, talent and investment that goes into their work. Plus, it reduces the market size further and so arguably bumps up the prices even more for the legitimate buyers. It's an unfashionable opinion, but I feel pretty much the same way about any copyrighted work - although most strongly about the 'little guy' who's producing skydiving movies and likely operating with fairly low margins to begin with - and, let's not forget, who isn't a faceless fat cat record company exec but a fellow skydiver or BASE jumper! For the record, I don't make skydiving movies and don't have any axe to grind! And I don't normally rant like this...
  11. Wow. Blade Runner, anybody? Except that we can't see round the corners... yet Me too. One of those two hot chicks is wearing a wrist watch.
  12. Questionable taste aside, the 'investigative' angle is surely just a cheap gimmick. Like saying a high score in Halo 2 qualifies you to pick up a gun and save humankind from marauding aliens. With all the publicity and controversy this site has generated, and at $9.99 a time, I reckon the owners will make a lot of bucks even if they do have to pay out that prize money. But no, I don't feel compelled to give them mine...

Wendy, If you're stuck in watching TV on a Friday night your social life's taken a serious turn for the worse...
  14. Not that I've seen, but I have noticed people videoing the seminars sometimes. I guess as long as the speaker is happy with that then it'd be a good way for you to get the info.

With you on that one - whenever I'm at Eloy for Christmas I'll tune in to Mexican Radio. I don't understand the lyrics and I can't sing along, but it sure makes a great soundtrack for driving through the Sonoran desert! I also like The Cocteau Twins (some English but lots of made-up language) and Sigur Ros, who I think use a mix of Icelandic and made-up words. Funny how words you don't understand sometimes make for the most beautiful music - maybe because so many lyrics are so bad!
  16. Done this myself, but you're right - it took a lot of effort and stupidity! One of my automatic door locks (on the rear door) was frozen on a really cold morning. Every time I unlocked the driver's door, because the locking system couldn't open all the doors it went right around the cycle and locked them all again. Eventually I managed to yank open the driver's door mid-cycle and start the engine to get the car warmed - then I set to work clearing the outside of the windows, shutting the driver's door behind me since the non-stop noise from the locking servos was driving me crazy. As soon as I did that, of course, all the doors locked again and stayed that way. By the time someone arrived to get me back into my car, it was pretty well warmed up, though
  17. Not sure because we turned up quite late and I think some people had already been and gone. I guess there were 20+ while we were there.
  18. It was sweet! Quite a few people there. First one I've managed to go to in a long time because I've been working in the midlands. Want to get really cliquey and start a Wimbledon skydivers thread?
  19. Ah, but we're not talking about turbines. No way does the Caravan compare to the beast that is the Let 410. Although I have to admit it gives the Beaver a run for its money... Anyway, I like being at the wrong DZ. Gives me something to bitch about...
  20. I liked the US remake of The Ring. Some nice shocks and just a great unsettling atmosphere throughout, plus I think the best use of special effects I've ever seen - like plucking the fly from the image on the TV screen, and the horse going overboard from the ferry. Not flashy but completely convincing. I haven't seen the original, although people say it's even better. Anybody seen both and have an opinion?
  21. We don't have a Cessna at my UK dropzone. But if you're unlucky enough to find yourself riding the piston Islander to 10 grand, you're also unlucky enough to be paying £18 for the privilege. That's right, pounds! I make that about $33, which is way off the scale of your poll options
  22. One thing I don't think has been mentioned so far - although it can be a bit of a chore, it's also satisfying packing your own canopy and jumping your own pack job. It's a self-reliance thing. You pack, you jump, you open. You just saved your own life again!
  23. I was going to say that! When my cats were younger they would attack my feet if they were sticking out the end of the bed. Kind of takes the fun out of it, and it is very distracting if you're expecting to get a toe bitten at any second...
  24. Woo-hoo! I'm currently working in Woking (or am I woking in Working? Can never quite remember). So for once I should be able to make it. See you there...
