How is ANY form of challenging the administration unpatriotic? Freedom of speech is the root of all our freedoms. To limit it due to war time BS is.....well, BS. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again..... -
Bush: Being against the war in Iraq is OK
ChasingBlueSky replied to ChasingBlueSky's topic in Speakers Corner
Since both sides are tossing about playground-worthy insults and rhetoric.....both are at fault. I'm waiting for the "I know you are but what am I" line of arguments next. This post was in response to the multitude of hard-core war supporters that use any base argument that an anti-war view is 100% wrong, unamerican, against the troops, blaah blah blah. As if having independent thought and opinions of your own was a bad thing. That line of thinking has scared me about this administration. And the trend of it in the populace scared me more of what that could hold for the future....... _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Bush: Being against the war in Iraq is OK
ChasingBlueSky replied to ChasingBlueSky's topic in Speakers Corner
For those saying going against the war is unpatriotic, etc..... http://www.dailybreeze.com/news/nationworld/articles/1994827.html President softens tone as he wraps up trip to Asia. During a stop in Mongolia, he praises the nation for Iraq aid and condemns radical Islam. By Terence Hunt The Associated Press ULAN BATOR, Mongolia -- In the wake of congressional unrest over his war policies, President Bush thanked Mongolia today for standing with him in Iraq and compared the struggle against Islamic radicalism to this country's battle against communism. "Free people did not falter in the Cold War, and free people will not falter in the war on terror," the president said in a speech prepared for delivery to members of Parliament and others at the Government House. Bush said Mongolia has stood with the United States as "brothers in the cause of freedom." He called Mongolians' success in driving communist leaders from power 15 years ago an example for the world. "Like the ideology of communism, the ideology of Islamic radicalism is destined to fail -- because the will to power is no match for the universal desire to live in freedom," Bush said. Bush's four-hour stop in this poor and sparsely populated nation was the first by an American president. The brief visit was a reward for Mongolia's pursuit of democracy and support for the U.S. fight against terrorism. Bush has been fiercely defending his Iraq policy across Asia as war critics in Washington found a new voice in hawkish Democratic Rep. John Murtha of Pennsylvania. The White House initially attacked Murtha, but Bush on Sunday toned down his backlash by saying there was nothing unpatriotic about opposing the war. He told reporters that Murtha is "a fine man" and a strong supporter of the military despite the congressman's call for troop withdrawal as soon as possible. "People should feel comfortable about expressing their opinions about Iraq," Bush said, three days after agreeing with Vice President Dick Cheney that the critics were "reprehensible." Bush brought up the growing Iraq debate when he met reporters after inconclusive talks with President Hu Jintao about friction in U.S.-China relations. He expected a warmer welcome in Mongolia, which has been eager for closer military relations with the United States and has provided about 120 Mongolian soldiers in Iraq. The number is small, but White House officials are quick to point out that, per capita, only two other countries -- the United Kingdom and Denmark -- have sent more of their soldiers to Iraq. The Mongolians have been rewarded with $11 million in U.S. aid to improve military forces. Bush also noted that the country was one of 16 chosen to share in $1 billion in U.S. aid as part of his Millennium Challenge Account that rewards poor countries that show a commitment to economic and government reform. Bush urged the parliament to pass anti-corruption legislation as part of the transition to a successful democracy. Mongolia's share of the $1 billion is subject to approval after the country submits a spending proposal to Washington. The millions of dollars expected from the program could make a big difference for a country with a total gross domestic product of only $1.1 billion. Bush said U.S. forces are proud to serve with the "fearless warriors" of Mongolia, home of legendary, ferocious horseman-warrior Genghis Khan. Bush specifically thanked two Mongolian soldiers who gunned down a suicide bomber who was trying to drive a truck full of explosives into a coalition mess tent in southern Iraq. With eight more U.S. military deaths over the weekend, Bush reminded Mongolians that their transition to liberty was not always easy. But he said Mongolians have built a better life with their struggle against communism. "Like the ideology of communism, Islamic radicalism teaches that the innocent can be murdered to serve their brutal aims," Bush said. "Like the ideology of communism, Islamic radicalism is dismissive of free peoples, claiming that men and women who live in liberty are weak and decadent." Besides his speech, Bush's schedule for Mongolia included a closed-door meeting with President Nambaryn Enkhbayar and a visit to a traditional felt tent to see Mongolia throat singing and other cultural events. Mongolia was the last scheduled stop during Bush's weeklong visit to Asia, which included visits to Japan, South Korea and China. He returns to Washington tonight. Bush ran into stiff resistance from the Chinese to his call for expanding religious freedom and human rights. He also reported no breakthroughs toward reducing China's massive trade surplus, overhauling its currency system or protecting intellectual property rights. The president took satisfaction simply in the fact that Hu mentioned human rights when the two leaders made joint statements to the press. "Those who watch China closely would say that maybe a decade ago, a leader wouldn't have uttered those comments," Bush said. "He talked about democracy." Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice complained that "we've certainly not seen the progress that we would expect" on a months-old U.S. request for action by China on specific human rights cases. Bush said the United States had presented a list of "dissidents that we believe are unfairly imprisoned." When a reporter suggested Bush had seemed unenthusiastic in the joint appearance with Hu, the president responded, "Have you ever heard of jet lag?" _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Texas may have executed innocent man
ChasingBlueSky replied to ChasingBlueSky's topic in Speakers Corner
I'm not a fan of the death penalty. Worthless revenge is not in me, nor do I feel I have the right to judge someone's life as forfeit. Our legal system is not perfect because of the human aspect of it. Therefore something as absolute as state legislated murder doesn't make sense to me. Nothing in this case has been proven - but the fact that there is doubt shows major flaws. http://www.cnn.com/2005/US/11/20/texas.execution.ap/index.html HOUSTON, Texas (AP) -- Doubts are being cast on the guilt of a Texas man executed more than a dozen years ago after the crime's lone witness recanted and a co-defendant said he allowed his friend to be falsely accused under police pressure, the Houston Chronicle reported Sunday. Ruben Cantu was 17 in 1984 when he was charged with capital murder in the fatal shooting of a man during an attempted robbery in San Antonio. The victim was shot nine times with a rifle before the gunman unloaded more rounds into the only eyewitness. The eyewitness, Juan Moreno, told the Chronicle that it wasn't Cantu who shot him. Moreno said he identified Cantu as the killer during his 1985 trial because he felt pressured and was afraid of authorities. (Watch the reporter investigating the case -- 3:16) Meanwhile, Cantu's co-defendant, David Garza, recently signed a sworn affidavit saying he allowed his friend to be accused, even though Cantu wasn't with him the night of the killing. Cantu was executed at age 26. He had long professed his innocence. "Part of me died when he died," said Garza, who was 15 at the time of the murder. "You've got a 17-year-old who went to his grave for something he did not do. Texas murdered an innocent person." Miriam Ward, forewoman of the jury that convicted Cantu, said the panel's decision was the best they could do based on the information presented during the trial. "With a little extra work, a little extra effort, maybe we'd have gotten the right information," Ward said. "The bottom line is, an innocent person was put to death for it. We all have our finger in that." Sam D. Millsap Jr., then the Bexar County district attorney who decided to charge Cantu with capital murder, told the newspaper he never should have sought the death penalty in a case based on testimony from an eyewitness who identified a suspect only after police showed him Cantu's photo three separate times. On the night of the attack, 19-year-old Moreno and his friend, 25-year-old Pedro Gomez, were sleeping in a house they were helping build for Moreno's brother. Burglars had recently struck, so they were guarding the home, located across the street from the trailer where Cantu lived. Both were awoken by a pair of teenagers demanding money. The older of the two carried a .22-caliber rifle. Gomez was killed; Moreno was shot but survived. Afterward, Moreno described his attackers as two Mexican-Americans he thought lived nearby. After a South San Antonio High School teacher mentioned that students were saying Cantu had done the killing, police showed Moreno photos of five Hispanic men, including Cantu. Moreno, however, did not identify Cantu as his attacker and the case appeared closed. About four months later, Cantu was involved in a bar shooting that injured an off-duty police officer. Cantu said the shooting erupted over a pool game and that he fired only when the officer flashed a gun and threatened him. The officer later said Cantu shot him four times in an unprovoked attack. That case against Cantu was dropped. "There was an overreaction, and some of the evidence may have been tainted. It could not be prosecuted," said former homicide Sgt. Bill Ewell, who oversaw the investigation. Ewell, a friend of the officer, said the bar shooting prompted him to reopen the Gomez murder case. He sent a bilingual homicide detective to show Cantu's photo to Moreno for the second time. Moreno still did not identify Cantu. The next day, Ewell sent out a different bilingual detective who brought Moreno, who was then an illegal immigrant, back to the police station. Moreno was again shown Cantu's photo along with four others. The officer's report indicates that Moreno picked out Cantu, then signed and dated the back of the photo. But the photo submitted into evidence at trial was not dated on the back, according to trial transcripts. Moreno said he felt compelled to do what police wanted, even though he knew it was wrong. "The police were sure it was (Cantu) because he had hurt a police officer," Moreno said in a recent interview. "They told me they were certain it was him, and that's why I testified." Ewell, now retired, told the Chronicle, "I'm confident the right people were prosecuted." _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... To those that quit skydiving: Are you happy ?
ChasingBlueSky replied to cocheese's topic in The Bonfire
Newsflash: There is more to life than jumping. You do what makes you happy. Those with the myopic view that jumping=life (jumping=the only way to be alive, etc) are people I often wonder about....you have no idea how much life you are missing out on. Been out for a year now - major injury recovery and career have kept me busier than a one legged man in an ass kicking contest. Jump again? Sure, when I have time and no other plans...and not before that. Haven't sold my gear. If someone wants to leave the sport, let them leave. The question is - will you still talk to them once they are no longer at the DZ every weekend? It's amazing how many "friends" you don't hear from just because you haven't made a jump in a while. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Not all military recruiters are the same. Some have a passion for it and want to recruit only those that will better the ranks. Then there are some that will just do whatever it takes to make their quota. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I don't find it funny. I find it ironic that a man that enjoys spreading his opinion and force feeding upon the nation....has an issue with other people expressing their opinion. Being an American means you can hold a seperate opinion, express it and still be protected by everything this country offers. EVEN IF its a disentening opinion against this country. To think otherwise is....well, un-American. I listen to his show. I enjoy the large amount of fiction he spreads about. It makes me laugh. He reeks of self-importence (well, most personalities such as himself do). I also know that a man with this much money would launch a lawsuit against anyone that said the same about him. For a well educated man he is very ignorant. The sad part about this? Most of this is all in an attempt to play upon emotions and ignorance to get more people to listen to him, to get free press and to line his pockets. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... What can we do about Skyride?
ChasingBlueSky replied to ChasingBlueSky's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
We have a winner! I can go thru this thread and pull out no less than 10 major items that are no where near ethical, moral or legal. I don't care if Skyride wants to advertise on the moon where they have no DZ. That isn't what this is about. Anyone can release multiple websites. Everyone needs to get off that issue. (well, as long as they don't don't promise a DZ location on the moon). HOWEVER! Multiple websites that steal exact text, pictures and misrepresent their location in the effort to complete a business transaction is the real issue. You have theft and bait/switch in there. This is being conducted across state lines and even international borders. On top of that customers are told after the fact that if they "upgraded" (re:spend more) on a ticket that it now becomes refundable. A look at their BBB history shows that Skyride has a history of refusing refunds, committing credit card fraud, and offering no way for a customer to escalate their problem. I can call Skyride right now and they will sell me a tandem certificate for dropzones that VOCALLY refuse to take them - most have gone so far as to post that notice on their website. This takes no more than 5 minutes to confirm. Now Skyride will refuse to tell me where I am going to be jumping until I give them my credit card info. Jeff - you are blocked from sending me PMs. This is a community issue. If you want to resolve this or change the public opinion - the come here with FACTS and PROOF that things have changed. Words like "seems to be" or "I think" or "I didn't know that" will give you no credit here. Too many years of acting as a destructive force to our sport have removed any possibility of that. Just so you know - I have no issue with Ben and Cary trying to make an honest dollar from skydiving. But, it has to be done honestly. That means 100% void of the items mentioned above. Aggressive business and marketing plans are fine if they are LEGAL and ETHICAL! Do not try to wash this over by saying "We are trying to expose the sport to new people" in the hopes of white washing this. IF issues have been changed/resolved - then show me. It seems that Skydive Arizona doesn't believe that these issues are resolved. There is too much you need to clarify and rectify before you will ever have our understanding or support. (Don't even get me started on the Chris Martin phone number theft). _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... The heat mon that came with the board has the ability to crash XP, esp if I have a game like BF2, Q4 or WoW running. Can't get a good read on the heat when it crashes. I have turned on the emergency shut down mode just in case. It just locks up - which makes me think its either the CPU or Video card. Things haven't locked up in a bit because I went McGuyver and interfaced a powerful box fan with the side of my case until I chase down the problem....hasn't crashed since :) _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Helping my friend build his new system - saw the difference between 1 and 2gb. Not that much for 90% of the work you do. 1gb is plenty for most gaming machines as well. However, I did notice that game transitions were a bit smoother with the 2gb in there. Going with high end, low latency memory is good if you are going to be pushing your machine to output top end graphics. Seeing Doom 3 run in VERY HIGH graphics mode is a site to behold. Even with 2gb of typical value ram you wouldn't be able to push your machine that much - one error or a slight bottleneck at that level will slow or hault your machine. A good aluminum case is one giant heatsink - always a wise move. There are a lot of junk cases out there with items not needed, but there are some that do a great job of heat containment better than others. I was having sound issues and swapped from my Audigy 2 to the onboard Nforce 2 audio. Couldn't tell that much of a difference. Ambient sounds and echo effects are a bit over accented by this on board stuff, but the 5.1 sound is still good for watching movies and listening to MP3s. However, the X-Fi card does two things - offloads some work from the CPU and apparently has a away of making your low quality MP3s sound closer to CD quality. I've yet to hear it, but I am tempted to get one just for that aspect. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Cooling is a pain in the ass. Can't figure out why mine is having so many heat issues. Alumn case, fans on each HD, major HSF combo that pushes the heat out the back. Three case fans, nice fan in the PS., heat spreaders on the DDRAM, fan on the back of the video card that pulls the heat out the back, bundled cables, SATA cables, thermal grease, HS on N bridge and S Bridge and reseated HSF combo twice. Only thing I haven't done is pull the HSF off the video card. Might use this as an excuse to upgrade this winter. Those new nvidia cards are looking sweet and I want one of those new dual cores CPUs, and that expansion card that pulls off some of the physics computations (when does that thing hit the market??) 2gb of DDRAM2 sounds nice as well :) _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Actually, I outsourced myself to India. That was probably a bad move from a satisfaction standpoint, but I'm way cheaper than I used to be. Rumor is that some consultant offshored the contract he was given. Never did a day of work and made good cash that way. 5 contracts at a time? No problem! _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....
