There is an interior chamber with a bench. You walk in, the doors are sealed and the fans start up. It's noisy with a slight breeze in this interior waiting room. There are two doors and you just cycle thru - in one door for your two minutes, fly out the other door grab a seat on the bench and slide down until its your turn again. I didn't understand how helpful tunnels were until I finally got in one. You will also not understand just how many bad habits you have until you are in there with a coach. I think the ones in Vegas and Orlando are the smartest tunnel locations around. You have a steady 24/7 stream of tourists that pay more per minute of tunnel time. I don't know the Perris or Eloy areas, but it sounds like both are a bit off path from typical attractions, but having them on two of the busiest DZs around will work to their favor for a good flow of customers. Pigeon Forge has lasted for many years - but then again there was very little competition at the time. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... full time skydive employment
ChasingBlueSky replied to skyfreek's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
From what I've seen, I have to agree with Chuck. On top of that make sure you are ready to mow the lawn, empty the garbage, etc just to pick up a few extra bucks most weeks. A good packer on a busy DZ will tend to make more money than the jumpers. However, packing is not fun, it burns you out quicker and you will more than likely hurt your body more this way than jumping. Also, if you quit your job make sure you have some cash for a rainy day because you won't be making money when the clouds roll in. I've heard a few full time jumpers say "If I don't get at least three jumps in this weekend with students my car is going to get repo'd!!" Plus your weekends will be work days for your compared to your friends that are there to kick back and relax. I used to want to work at a DZ full time until I spent a summer doing so. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... are we so jaded that the media must hype EVERYTHING?
ChasingBlueSky replied to cameramonkey's topic in The Bonfire
We only have ourselves to blame. Why? We are the ones that slow down for car accidents, get caught up in OJ running down the expressway, read tabloids, watch trashy reality TV, make Jerry Springer popular, etc.... Most honorable reporters are long gone. It's about glam, popularity, ratings, bill rates, looking good, getting it on the air 2secs before your competition, fitting as much news on the TV screen at once no matter how of the meat of the story has to be cut.......but more importantly it is about making money. Therefore they look at what most of what people fall for (see above) and present the news in that fashion. Look how popular the Cable News Nets are, the Primetime live shows.....and then look at the last remaining real news shows and how much their ratings are dropping off. Therefore the phrase "If it bleeds, it leads" is what most news stations live by. And also - don't forget that sometimes the medium is the message. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... ChasingBlueSky replied to ChasingBlueSky's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
From my understanding, Skyride will be an issue brought up at this meeting. If you are in the area, it would be worth it to attend the meeting and get your opinion out there. So....What can we do about skyride? Go to the meeting and express your concerns! http://www.uspa.org/news/index.htm#120605 USPA Board Plans Winter Meeting (12/08/05) The USPA Board will meet February 17-19, 2006, in Phoenix, Arizona. I would say Claudia lost out when the new BSG came out. But I think IRL I would prefer someone like Kaliegh. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....

Someone showed this to me over the weekend....figured it would be classic once it got around. Still not sure if those that don't game will find it as funny. WoW FTW! The Tauren joke at the end was the best. Alot of work went into that video! Much better than Leroy Jenkins. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....

If Skyride wants to market in other cities or other mediums....there is nothing wrong or illegal with that. This is essentially what 1800 Skydive does. As long as they remain legal and ethical I don't think anyone would have a problem. The issue is the alleged activities documented in the other Skyride thread. Those are the real issues. People shouldn't be soo itchy to react if they are just operating like a business. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Everyone was damn stupid last night. Walked to a place downtown for dinner with some coworkers. Just watching everyone pretend that traffic rules were out the window was....well, just nuts. I think there was more than just water in that snow last night. Either that or we have a shit-ton of imports living here now. Hopefully yesterday was enough to get them to leave. Did you take I6 for that drive? I55 was backed up because they closed off exits that feed the Midway area. Not sure I understood why Cicero (a mile east of the accident) needed to be closed but they left Central (where the plane was) open. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... THE END OF ROCK & ROLL HISTORY: CBGB'S to CLOSE.
ChasingBlueSky replied to RastaRicanAir's topic in The Bonfire
We came close to the same thing here in town with The Double Door (they wanted to make it a Starbucks!). A massive amount of public letter writing kept it open. Sucks, CBGBs is always one of those places I've wanted to get to. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Where is trollhagen? Why is it better than DH? The good thing about DH is that I can still make a day trip out of it from Chicago. MN or the UP makes it a much longer ordeal. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....

Wow...took me over an hour to get around my neighborhood this morning. Really odd to see a 737 nose down in the middle of the intersection. When you live that close to an airport you always wonder....esp with how close we are to the runways. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Have it in IL - Galena area, and a few places in WI (where I learned). Devil's Head is considered one of the better WI places to go. You deal with what you have. We have more hills out here than people realize - this area is where the glacial extension of the last ice age ended. But we don't have mountains. Our hills should be busy this weekend as we just saw nearly a foot of snow fall yesterday. If I was to make a trip out west for some downhill, I'd choose Utah from everything I've read and seen. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... It was insane around here last night. 10pm and traffic in the city was like the middle of rush hour. I left work at 9pm and it still took me over 2 hours to get home. Due to a busy work day I had no idea what happened in my area until I got the radio on. Trying to get into my area was hellish between 10inches of new snow and the cops closing off everything. That intersection is the least populated of the four around the airport - if the plane had skid off in any other direction this would have been a much bigger disaster. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... High School Student suspended due to Blog
ChasingBlueSky replied to ChasingBlueSky's topic in Speakers Corner
http://www.suntimes.com/output/news/cst-nws-blog08.html WHAT WAS POSTED Edited excerpts from blog postings about Taft High teachers. Posted Nov. 3 "She'll see oh yes, there will be blood, well no that's just this damn pen that exploded, and no, I won't kill her ... yet ... however ... Ms. ------'s neck will be ... slit like a ...... chicken! Now...WHO DO I HAVE TO KILL BESIDES... MS. ------!! SHE'S SOO SHORT!!!!! Posted Nov. 23 "....Yes, Ms. ---, she [obscene act deleted], literally I mean what do you think she does in that secret little back room of hers'' Posted Tuesday "Wow, I'm an idiot. And I'm done self-pitying. It's time I took the blame. I cannot defend what I wrote. I want my future to stay intact and my past not to harm me.... I didn't know our Xanga's were being monitored. I should have expected it. It's not private like we'd like to think. I thought it ...was freedom of speech, but it's not. What I wrote was vulgar and slanderous." Three male students at Taft High School -- seventh- and eighth-graders in an Advanced Placement program -- were disciplined Wednesday after obscene and threatening remarks were posted about Taft staff on a Web log that reportedly had a teacher in tears when discovered this week. The issue has divided students and teachers at the Northwest Side school, with many students, even those who disagree with the nature of the remarks, defending the students' right to make them. "It's none of their business. Why are they monitoring online student journals in the first place?" demanded 16-year-old junior Fabiola Segovia. "You would think teachers and staff have better things to do, like making this school a better place. This school is crappy. I think they had no right to read it, much less suspend those students." Many teachers, however, said such hurtful actions should never have First Amendment protections. "They should definitely be suspended. I don't think this fits under freedom of speech," said English teacher Maha Jarad. "I think the issue also has to do with responsibility.... You want freedom of speech, you have to respect rules governing how to treat others and conduct yourself." 'The school is on solid ground' One Nov. 3 blog posting said of a teacher: "She'll see oh yes, there will be blood,'' and, "no, I won't kill her ... yet'' and her "neck will be ... slit like a ...... chicken!" Chicago Public Schools lawyers Wednesday approved disciplinary action against the students after a long review over whether outraged Taft administration officials were wading into First Amendment waters by seeking suspensions, sources said. "The school became aware of some disturbing and offensive remarks that these three students were making through blogs about several staff members at Taft. They met with the students and their parents this morning," CPS spokesman Mike Vaughn said. "The law department's determination is that the school is on solid ground with disciplining the students involved." CPS officials cited confidentiality issues in refusing to divulge the action taken. Taft students, however, including one of the three involved, said the 13-year-old and two 14-year-olds -- gifted students who attend seventh and eighth grade at the high school's Academic Center, were suspended, one for as long as 10 days. Taft, at 6545 W. Hurlbut in Edison Park, offers academically advanced students a six-year high-school program that begins in seventh grade. CPS officials handled a similar case differently last year. In March 2004, a 16-year-old white female student at Walter Payton College Prep, 1034 N. Wells, posted derogatory comments about gays and blacks on a Web log. In that case, CPS' top lawyers converged on the Gold Coast magnet school to explain to students that the junior was not being disciplined because she had a right to free speech. School officials had told angry black students that the most they could do was meet with the girl and her parents and discuss tolerance issues. "The comments weren't made in school. They may be opinions we don't like, but they're opinions," CPS general counsel Ruth Moscovitch told the Sun-Times. Teacher 'was very upset' Wednesday, Vaughn said the two incidents are different. "The Payton thing involved racially insensitive remarks not directed at specific people. The Taft incident involves specific remarks about people who were named in the blog -- offensive, disturbing, threatening comments. ... At least one of the teachers involved was very upset." Tuesday, one student posted an apology. But that didn't end the debate at Taft. "A blog is like your journal. You should be able to say whatever you want in it and not worry about getting in trouble, especially because it's done on your own time and not in school," said 16-year-old sophomore Cindy Black. But bilingual teacher Genaro Cueva disagreed. "I don't think that's right. Other schools hold kids accountable for what they do outside of school. Why shouldn't Chicago?" Most courts have held student bloggers accountable BY ABDON M. PALLASCH Legal Affairs Reporter Can schools punish students for actions they take off-campus, such as exercising First Amendment rights on the Internet? Yes, in many cases, the courts have ruled. Twenty years ago, a judge in Maine ruled that school officials had no right to punish a student who extended his middle finger to a teacher at a restaurant parking lot outside school hours. The court ruled it was beyond their jurisdiction," said David L. Hudson Jr., a Nashville law professor who researches student expression cases for the First Amendment Center. "Some argue that school officials go out of their jurisdiction [punishing students for Internet postings], that it's the online equivalent of flipping the teacher the bird." Columbine used as example But he said the majority of courts around the country, especially since the shootings at Columbine High School in Colorado in 1999, have held that school officials are well within their rights to discipline students for what they post off-campus on the Internet. In the 1969 "Tinker" decision holding that Iowa students had a right to wear black armbands to protest the Vietnam War, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that "school officials can regulate student expression if they can reasonably forecast that the expression would cause a substantial disruption or material interference with school activities or invade the rights of others." The high court also held in 1986 that school officials can curb student speech that is "vulgar, rude, or plainly offensive." Students have won cases against administrators for postings that criticize school policy. A federal court last month ruled that a New Jersey school district had no right to suspend an eighth-grader for running a Web site critical of the school. But expulsions of students who compile "hit lists" of classmates generally have been upheld. A junior at Jacobs High School in Algonquin was suspended last year for posting such a list on the Internet. Four students at the Illinois Math and Science Academy in Aurora were expelled for posting a song a teacher felt was threatening. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Any rumors on the Katana 135/150 release?
ChasingBlueSky replied to SkydiveMO's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Don't forget the Stiletto 190 and Safire up to 260. I haven't kept my ear to the ground to know what is going on at PD these days. The lack of a KA 150 doesn't effect me that much as their are other options (and nearly the same performance). The KA 135/150 could be a lot of fun and safe in the right hands. It could also be a conservative path for more performance for someone like AggieDave. Should this force PD to put one out? I think not. Should the fact that someone might screw themselves in be a reason to hold it back. I think not - if that was true we would have no HP canopies. However, I will say that the ST190 was a good trasition canopy for me. It allowed me to stay at my same wingloading while learning how to fly a eliptical. There is a market for jumpers the fall outside the typical 145lb male. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Any rumors on the Katana 135/150 release?
ChasingBlueSky replied to SkydiveMO's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
If someone is that focused on getting on to something too small too quick...not releasing the KA in those sizes is the wrong way to keep that person safe/alive/educated. We've seen people die from low turns on a ST 190 and a Manta in the last few years also. I've said it before - unless the culture changes, we will continue to see an increase in good-canopy fatalities. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me....
