  1. I heard a nuclear industry huckster talking about hydrogen a while back. His line was that dealing with the unused energy during the normal ebb and flow of power demand raises the cost of nuclear power dramatically. If, however, we have large scale hydrogen production facilities we can use nukes to supply the power for our energy needs approaching the minimum demand valleys, and use hydro/coal/gas etc. to produce the variable quantities above that. This will allow nuclear plants to run at a flat output and reduce costs, making nuclear energy economically competitive. Haven't heard an educated rebuttal.
  2. I think it's just because Vector/Sigma has a much larger pool of TMs. All the Euro-rigs have the handles to match RWS (I think); operating a Strong is a bit like operating a Mac.
  3. If SDU is the standard why bother with the USPA rating at all? Just get your SDU rating and be done with it.
  4. I wonder if they will ease up on Soviet Canuckistan now that they're flogging Foxnews to us on cable.
  5. I do my handle check five times in a row. Kinda like Jack Nicholson with the door lock in "As Good As It Gets."
  6. I don't know thier numbers for sure, but I've been told by those who do that it's in the six thousand range. You really don't notice a couple of tandems on an otter, butwhen they're doing 30-100 otters a day they add up. I could be wrong (first time for everything).
  7. Well it would certainly send a message to the troops.
  8. What's cool about Eloy is that you don't notice the tandems, but make no mistake, larry Hill is primarily in the tandem business. Skydive Arizona is one of the busiest tandem factorys in the US. Perhaps you've heard of some of the others: Cross Keys, Paris, Lodi. Although there are a few tandem only DZs, in general the big factories are also the big up-jumper centres as well.
  9. It is funny, at least it would be if folks didn't take it so seriously (kinda like nationalism).
  10. Yep, Long haired, dope smoking, college students in Che Guevarra t-shirts shouting anti-government obscenities are as American as apple pie.
  11. I don't know if that entered into the decision or not. I believe the arguement was made in both cases on the illegality of what they were asked to do. That said the temptation (legitemate but not necessarily legal) is always there for a tribunal member to decide based on the consequences of sending someone back.
  12. Hyperion Cantos (all four) are some of the most enjoyable fiction I've ever read. I'm in the middle of Ilium now. After you finish the Hyperion/Endimion set find a copy of "The song of Kali" by the same Dan Simmons; It'll scare the shit out of you. I am not really an horror fan but anything written by this guy is worth reading
  13. Heh, heh, heh, Sooo, you don't wannna buy our beef eh? You don't wanna but our softwood lumber eh? You don't wanna buy our dope eh? Oh so you do but the DEA is fucking that up? well we'll talk about that later. Soooo you wanna but some oil do ya? Heh, Heh Heh. No problem, Heh, Heh, Heh.
  14. Mohummed Ali John Steinbeck JFK (just for the vision for the apollo missions)
  15. Y'know, sometimes I regret not trying to become a fighter pilot in my youth (usually right after watching Top Gun). Now I know I never had a chance. I am geneticly inelegible; I suffer from photic sneeze reflex. Is there a government grant or something?
  16. We check affiliation/insurance, and licences. If you have a licence you are competent to look after your own gear. As Cathy Dause said to me about fifteen years ago, "We want you to be responsible for your own safety while you're here. Bring me your ticket.
  17. Americans acted virtually to a man with honor and distinction once they entered the fray. However many Poles, Frenchmen, Czecks, Canadians, Austrailians, Kiwis, South Africans, et cetera died for want of their assistance during the period before Pearl Harbour. The official American stance was 'not our problem' until they were attacked. WWII was not a meaningless war. There was a very clearly defined bad guy. The fact that it was Poles and Frenchmen dying and not Americans was no excuse The free world may not be able to save Taiwan but you better believe the US will try. GWB was very clear about this and so has congress been over the last thirty years. When the US was attacked four years ago their friends showed up. Canada was not attacked, but our servicemen and women spilled blood in Afghnistan, and are still there.
  18. BULLSHIT- there's another election next year. i voted against the winners in the last four Canadian elections. I'll vote against 'em in the next one too.
  19. Cayce, you should never try to fix a line over. Messing with slow developing malfunctions is a major killer of junior jumpers. Just chop it. BTW the longer you wait, the more likely you will have burn dammage.
  20. Under his watch America stood by while their friends were invaded (1939-41) He knew what he should have done but let the polls dissuade him.
  21. We had that in Canada recently. I voted for Don Cherry just to freak the artsy fucks out. I've always admired the writing of Thomas Jefferson. From reading Lawrocket's post I realise I may be misinformed, however, about his importance in drafting the constitution. Chuck Yeager is the greatest living American.
  22. Have you talked to the Ganonoque DZO? His name is Tom and I'll bet he can come up with a safe, effective method. As far as the radio goes, we didn't always have radios. We used to use a big red arrow; that work for you?
  23. Student jump prices include gear rental. If they drop the handles, who cares? The only responsibility for gear we put on the student is for altimeters. If you break it in the plane or on the jump, oh well. If you break it while on the ground (for instance you put it down on the counter and someone else knocks it on the floor) you bought it.
  24. Yes! Way less. It provides stability on 2 of 3 axiis (sp?). Dumping in a flat spin just causes line twists. Dumping while looping or rolling may cause a horseshoe.
