I've been at my office since 4:45 a.m. I'm spent and my brain is fried. Shouldn't you be in hour 60 of your 72 hour shift, there, newbie doctor? Even we newbie doctors need a little R&R every now and then. I've spent most of the last 3 days with my...ahem...lawyer, and yesterday in a courtroom. Now that THERE's some shit! There is all that looting and ugliness going on. There are also a whole lot of school children cleaning out their closets of clothes and toys and delivering their treasures to churches in the area that are housing people who have lost everything. There are people who are dropping everything to go and help. Disaster can bring out the best and the worst. There's ugliness, but there's also compassion. I think there's a lot more of the latter. The forces of nature? They're strong, and sometimes they really do put us in our place. But they're not ugly. It's just nature. Teach whatever you like in religion/civics/ethics class; science class is for science. That's the problem here: Kansas want to impose religious doctrine on science teaching. I disagree. If he gets a hard on every time he sees her, THAT is when he should step back and take the time to think with his other head!!! Yeah....being from Arkansas I do know what you mean. I tend to stick pretty close to the South most of the time, but even through this part of the country an Arkansas accent tends to stand out. I guess I'm just so use to listening people mock me that I'm not bothered by it and can usually laugh along if it's in good fun. In time most people come to realize that even we hicks can have some substance. Diversity is wonderful among flexible and open-minded people.... When I'm sick, I usually take 2 aspirin (or some such mask for symptoms) and wait for the illness to pass. If you're healthy, and the illness is minor, that's usually good advice. Try giving that advice to someone coming to you to give them something to make them well. Usually there's something you can give that will make them well a little sooner, and that usually makes folks happy. I always tell people that I can give them x medicine and it might help symptoms to resolve sooner, but if they just ride it out, they'll also get better. People WANT medicine. Some people want to complain that we prescribe too much medicine. What's a doc to do? I tell people what kinds of side effects to expect, what benefits to expect, and what ot expect if they don't take medicine. If I know of alternatives (like gargling salt water) that will also help, then I offer that too. People usually WANT the medicine.... Insurance pays.... Costs rise. BUT then take someone with diabetes, hypertension, and things that will REALLY make their lives crappy. Give them medicines that they really, really NEED. They won't take it half the time. That happened to me once. Went out with this guy for a couple of months! Had a great time. When I KNEW he was gay was when we went skinny dipping and he STILL didn't try to kiss me. It's not killing the animal that's inhumane (either by cutting off its head, shooting it, or giving it an injection), it's inflicting pain that is inhumane and cruel. Most of those that I know, probably all, would have preferred that we neither assassinated Saddam nor invaded Iraq. It was never an either or situation.... Likewise you can imagine how things would have gone if world news had been instantly available in everyone's living room during WWII. Many, many things are different now, and those kinds of "what if's" aren't very relevant. I will point this out: The President is my Commander-in-Chief. People that say they support the troops but don't support the President are lying to themselves. If you support the troops, then support their commanders, for it is they who direct the troops, and execute the policies as they are developed. That's absolutely ridiculous. I support the people who are sent over there 100%. BUT I think it's WRONG that they were sent there to begin with. I think we're gotten ourselves into a helluva mess that's not going to have the peachy ending that the president and his compadres promised. Now people use tactics like saying that I'm "lying to myself" if I think beyond their simplistic algorithm --that's bogus. They call me un-American for not supporting this horribly shameful course of action. My world is not so black and white that I can't have thoughts that to you seem conflicted. I hope that you're right, but being photographed hugging doesn't tell a very reliable story. While I have been opposed to our occupation of Iraq since the beginning, I would not be pleased if she were to use my brother's (who is serving in Iraq now) name on one of her crosses unless she had the blessing of my family. I think the names that she uses would also mean a lot more if she asked for families to contact her who supported her cause and were willing to have their child's, or brother's, or sister's name on a cross.
