I don't know if they have a *right* to use a soldier's name without permission from his family. I believe they should have gotten an OK from the family of each of the soldiers whose names they wanted to use, and should take down a name if requested by the family to do so. I believe the father was well within his rights to take down his son's name and demand it not be used. That said, I think driving one's truck over another's lawful protest, no matter how much one disagrees with that particular protest, is a bad move. I think she would have gained more support for her cause had she shown the same sympathy for this father as she hopes the rest of the nation will show to her. If she's going to use the fact that she lost her son as a tool to affect people's emotional response to our involvement in Iraq, her being sympathetic to another parent's loss would have been appropriate. As far as rights go....I hope that the extent of our behaviors is not limited only by the boundaries dictated by our legal system and the Constitution. linz -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. Seriously, don't you feel the difference? It's like having a next door neighbor who is a nosey busybody for a couple of decades then having a group of Aryan Nation members move in. The first one annoyed me frequently. The latter scares me. jen This is exactly what I was thinking about this morning on the drive to work. There was a story on some news show yesterday about a father being arrested for allowing teenagers to drink at a party at his house. He had allowed the kids to have the party there on the condition that none of them would leave (i.e. drive). Things we use to just shake our heads about, now we're criminalizing. Heck, we're ALL gonna be criminals at this rate. It frightens me too.... The "Land of the Free" is becoming, more and more, quite a misnomer.... Wow...what an overwhelming list. I think I know people in allof those categories, and I'm sure I fit in here or there myself. For whatever negative these folks bring to skydiving, I see more positive. The "alcoholics"--can be a helluva lot of fun at the bonfire. Check on 'em, and make sure they're not drinking or hung-over when they board the plane tomorrow. When you see your friend needing help, be there to point it out to 'em. I know plenty of people who have substance abuse problems that I don't call dangerous to others. Incompetents--If you look a little deeper you mind find what their competencies are. Sometimes the things we dislike most in others is that which we hate most about ourselves. If you can't find their competencies, then don't try to make them live up to a standard that you know is not possible for them. Just enjoy them as human beings. Such a person might turn out to be a friend. Bullies. I honestly haven't met any bullies in skydiving that try to keep people from progressing. That just makes no sense to me....unless maybe you're someone who is not progressing, and someone else is looking out for your safety. Maybe then you'd see that person as a bully. I'm at a loss here. Grandfather of the sport types. You can learn a heckuvalot from these folks. You should never discount a grandfather's experience, in or out of the sport. ....and so on. I have to go to work. And being a woman, you'd know. I'd much rather be with a dirt poor guy who lives in a tent and is happy with himself and his life than with a millionaire who hates where he is and what he's doing. ditto. Sure skydiving enriches my life. Otherwise, I doubt I'd do it. But, as others have also said, there are other aspects of my life that are even more fulfilling.....family and family time, friends, and work.... Great topic! I hadn't worked on my belch in years, but now that my child's at an age that I often humiliate him in public, I'm able to make up for it (in his eyes) by out-belching ALL of his friends.
