And the plural is "y'alls", or sometimes "all y'a'll"? On the southwest side of Chicago we have "youse" (singular) and "youses" (plural). Close.... "Y'all's" is plural possessive. "All y'all" is plural and including everyone except the speaker. "All y'all over there" is more specifically speaking about a subset of "all y'all." This may be true of some people, but where is the harm in a kind gesture? If you have the attitude of treating all people with respect, you will encourage someone. You may never know who you encourage...but you will encourage someone nonetheless. There's nothing wrong, and a lot right, with making another person's day just a little bit easier to cope with. A story....that could go in the Iatrogenic morbidity thread. I have a patient who came into the hospital with a COPD exacerbation. His blood pressure was also REALLY high, and he had chest pain. His EKG showed only a little ischemia that could be explained by his very high blood pressure. His cardiac enzymes over 24 hours were normal--i.e., he wasn't having a heart attack. After we brought his blood pressure down and got his breathing under control, he had no more chest pain. A week later, as he was being discharged, we all thought he was in better shape than when he came in...until he had the heart attack on the Sunday on which he was being discharged. He was given Plavix by someone (I'm not sure who), so he had to wait a week (maybe should've been longer) off Plavix before he could have his coronary bypass. Well, he finally went to surgery. It went fine, but in the next 48 hours, his chest was opened up 4 more times because of "bleeding" (200-300cc/hour) from his chest tube. The surgeons never found the source of his bleeding, but it eventually stopped. He was kept sedated for 4 days after surgery. When he was weaned from his sedation, he was found to have a huge motor deficit on his left side. A CT revealed an equally huge stroke that he had had within the previous 3-4 days. Now I suppose this guy can be happy, but his life is probably gonna suck for a while. Picking yourself up by the bootstraps is a good idea, but probably not very realistic without at least some support from other people. I'd rather be a person who gives this guy a hand, and makes it a little easier for him to recover, than to be a person who says, "Eh....if you're gonna be happy, you'll have to do it yourself," and walk away to make my OWN day a little better. linz -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. In Arkansas? It sounds like you haven't fully embraced your culture yet. After years of very expensive and very intensive therapy I managed to fully embrace my culture. Have too much money in it now to go back There is still an education system in place here.... And for those of us who choose to take full advantage of it, it's not as shabby as some might lead you to believe. I have only embraced some elements of my culture...lol. Where is here? okay....my bad....I'm post call. "Here" is where I am...lol...in Arkansas. We're progressive, apparently, in both family court and family planning. There is a group of people who think that AIDS is a punishment sent by God. Doesn't matter what they think. If you don't treat you children for a life-threatening illness, the state can, should, and often does take them away. That's the easy part. Where we fall really, really short is providing children in these circumstances with an acceptable alternative.... I have known far too many children who were abused and neglected to at least the same extent in foster homes as in the homes from which they were removed to begin with. Sometimes kids are just SOL. You have to register to get that story, so I didn't read it. Here, either a mother has to have an HIV test while she's pregnant or her children have to be tested when they're born. Refusal to treat your children for a serious illness is medical neglect. It's insane to let a mom keep her kids who is so friggin' stubborn that she's willing to let them die rather than admit the obvious. Nope. I don't think children should skydive. 13 y/o children are just beginning to be able to think abstractly. While the dangers of skydiving don't register with a lot of adults, at least we should be developmentally capable of grasping what's at risk. 13 y/o's aren't there. Also, I'd imagine that most children who go skydiving do it because it's the dream of one of their parents for them to skydive. You have your own life. Thanks for saying so Rick. I think I'm a pretty good mom too. BUT the point is that I wasn't just handed custody because I was the mother. I was granted custody because I was THE PARENT....the ONLY parent that my child had really had....because my child had been MY priority for years while he and I had been my ex's LAST priority....and because I spent a lot of money making sure that all of my i's were dotted and t's were crossed. People talk like the system is set up so that men always get a raw deal. Despite the fact that they really didn't have any dirt on me and that I had LOTS of dirt on him, there was nothing automatic about my remaining the custodial parent. Yeah....I spent the $10,000 and got custody of my child. A nurse I know had her child taken from her because her ex accused her of using meth. Not until she proved with a hair test that she had used NO drugs did she get her child back. That was in the same district that I am in. Now, maybe I would've gotten custody anyway. Maybe the threat of him taking my child, and his relentlessness, had me feeling less confident than I should've felt. In the end we did slam the sorry jerk and left him looking like the fool that he is. BUT never once did my attorney leave me feeling that we had it all wrapped up. In fact, at one point when we thought we might have a different judge than we were supposed to have, he said he was worried. So....basically...I don't know what the odds really were. What I DO know is that I went a year without sleep, but eventually got custody. I know women here who have lost custody over not much of anything. Maybe it's just where we live though.... Interesting. That's what I always thought too...until I got into the custody brawl. Despite the fact that my ex had been reported for child abuse, had admitted to leaving my 7 y/o son home while he went to work overnight, and that he admitted that I had always been the primary parent and a very good parent, the fact that I was seeing another person after we separated (but weren't divorced) DID threaten my keeping custody of my child. I did get custody, but there were certainly no guarantees. I basically had to demonstrate that I had NEVER done anything to jeapordize my child in order to keep custody....he had jeapordized him at every turn it seemed, but still had a shot at taking my child away from me. You'd have to have really good reason to believe that this person who says they're 13 is really an adult for that argument to fly. Talking to a person who you believe might be 13 years old about even the remote possibility of having sex with her should be prosecuted. For an adult to talk to a child about having a sexual relationship is abusive, whether a real physical act occurs or not. If he has a sexual fantasy that involves children, he should be DAMN sure that the person he's acting this fantasy out with, whether it be through verbage or physical contact, is an adult.
