At the risk of getting this thread kicked over to Speakers Corner, pets are members of the family. Decent people don't leave family members behind. Particularly with dogs, there is also a trust relationship there. Abandoning a pet, especially a dog, is an act of betrayal that speaks volumes about the person that does it. Walt Lots of decent people who love their pets barely have money to feed them. A lot of people didn't have money to find accommodations for themselves that would accept their pets. That was the harsh reality. The fact that they kept themselves safe and hoped that their pets would survive doesn't speak badly of the people who left their pets behind, imho. If I had to choose between my child's safety and my pets', I would keep my child safe, no doubt, even if that meant my pets would drown. Yeah...in my mind there's enough "evidence" that God exists. And there's lots of evidence that the Bible is flawed--inaccurate on many counts. I still believe in the spirit of the Bible, and I still beleive in God. My point was that you don't prove the accuracy or reliability of a historical document in the same way you'd prove that an electron passed through an object. Gotta be more specific than that in order to discuss what you're talking about. Well...there is proof, there's a preponderance of the evidence, and there's complete subjectivity. It's a continuum. I tend to trust things MORE as they get more toward the "proof" side, and less as they tend toward the "subjective" side. That being said....there are some things that are totally subjective that I still believe in, BUT with enough evidence to the contrary, I'd probably, with some degree of sadness, let go of my need to believe.... -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. Of course. You don't prove something happened in recorded history with the scientific method. No one alive today actually saw John Hancock sign the Declaration of Independence. I believe he actually did it, though, because reliable people recorded that he did and we've got his "John Hancock " on the document. It's not something you can prove over and over in a lab but I believe he did it. Don't you? Yeah....something about that signature lends a little credence. I also believe in God. BUT I recognize that the Bible is simply wrong on many, many counts....because the reliable evidence points to the contratry. The flaws are apparent. Thomas saw Jesus beaten, crucified, buried, and standing in front of him days later. He saw him along with hundreds of other people. He not only saw him but put his finger in the holes left by the nails and spear. That's not a reproducible effect as in a scientific experiment but proof positive nonetheless. What we observe of electrons is reproducible time and time and time again, consistently, by whomever the observer is. Individuals' perceptions often are incompatible....and then to choose what we think is correct or incorrect, sometimes we go with our gut, which probably is equivalent to "what we WANT to believe." There are a lot of "responsible" parents who simply don't take their children to the doctor every single year for a check-up....and that's okay. There are also a lot of doctors who don't address weight issues of every child who comes into clinic. Kids (and adults) who seem just a little chubby by today's standards are often at risk for chronic health problems. That's a given. What I think is also true is that as a society we're becoming far too complacent with being a little overweight. People who are at risk for diabetes, heart disease, and hypertension because of their weight blend right into the crowd and are considered the norm. It's hard to think of "normal" people needing intervention. Calculating a BMI takes all of 2 minutes and costs next to nothing. Making people aware of the risks to their children's health can potentially benefit society greatly. Nowhere in my mind can I find justification for NOT screening kids this way. I'm usually on the other side of this argument. I do think that parents often shirk too many of their parental responsibilities, hoping someone else will pick up the ball. This time, with the cost being so little and the potential benefit being so great, I'm all for school nurses adding this screening to the other screenings they've been doing for years. Funny....I don't take that kind of crap from friends. Those folks just don't end up being my friends because we part company before it ever reaches a real "friendship" point. Rather they end up being my husbands...or husband...most recent one. Sometimes it's so nice to shed someone, whether friend or husband, that it's best not to even ask why.... If you can't see the problem with the pres playing his guitar at a party while Americans are begging for help, then I must admit, I feel soory for you. Most reasonable people would be appalled. I'm not appalled by him playing guitar at a party. I'm much more appalled at people's desire to use this situation as an opportunity to polarize us against one another. Considering that this country was founded by refugees and continues to grow with refugees, I think it's racist to discriminate against refugees by calling them second class or not American citizens. The surgeon I'm working with this month is a "refugee" from another country. I'm fairly certain he'd be relatively unhappy to hear that a refugee is not equivalent to a citizen. lol....that's funny. JEEEEZ! What's worse than the stupidity of it is that the last thing needed in the midst of this crisis is something else that is meant to divide people. Jesse Jackson should just shut up and do something helpful for a change. Since this weekend, I've spent many hours taking care of sick refugees, evacuees, people who lived in New Orleans. Most of those who landed here are white. Is it derogatory for me to call them refugees? Or is it only derogatory if we're referring to black people? So do we just leave them to be on their own? No. I sure don't think so. I think in a crisis you help, regardless of why the problem exists in the first place. BUT....if people would depend more on their own resources and take some responsibility for their own situations, then solving their problems would probably be a little less overwhelming.
