That's a good point... But some viruses are endemic to specific places, so it's possible that this virus does not affect people in other parts of the world. I don't know... I seriously doubt that a virus is the main cause of obesity for most people, but I do think it's a possibility for some people. (Hmm, I'm posting in a thread that I said I was giving up on - I hate it when people do that. ) Yeah....but the whole virus thing does seem pretty far fetched. We Tricked and Trate in the rain tonight. Not too many out here either this year. I think it's because of the churches....lol. They go having all of these "Halloween Fairs" and stuff to minimize the ghoulishness on the streets. It really makes sense to people who stay slim with relative ease that when you eat less and exercize more that you get the desired results. That's how it's always happened for them. And the bottom line is that it's TRUE! I mean, how many fat people do you see among those who have been deprived of food for any period of time??? But it's all the variables in between that are so easily, and conveniently, overlooked when people want to bash folks who are overweight. There are issues, like RhondaLea points out, of things like Thyroid disease. There are also just genetic differences in people. Many years ago there was a survival advantage for people who held onto those pounds. They're the ones who didn't dry up and blow away in times of famine. Well, nowadays we don't have famine, but some people still just hang onto pounds.... They could REALLY eat less and lose weight, but they'd feel HUNGRY....a LOT. Those who just eat less and exercize more and lose wieght don't have to really feel hunger in order to lose the desired weight....usually they just have to eat healthy. Anyone CAN lose weight by eating less and exercizing more. It's just that some people can eat a little less and exercize a little more to get a desired effect. Others have to eat a LOT less and exercize a LOT more to get the same effect. Then there's a phenomenon of the human body that makes it even MORE difficult to lose weight once you take off about 10-15%. If I take off that much and level off, it's fine, because I've never been obese enough to need to lose more. If you ARE that overwieght, and it's hard to lose 10-15%, then it's gonna be damn near impossible to lose more. Some people do it, but they're few and far between. Sure it CAN be done.... I think a lot of people, me included, are often annoyed when we see really obese people putting away incredibly large amounts of really unhealthy food. It's easy to generalize that to the rest of the overweight population.... When I flew from Little Rock, to Philly, and then to Orlando last year I was kindly pulled aside on two of the three legs of my trip for the more extensive search. During one of these searches, as they had were patting me down, a big guy comes over holding my rig. It went like this: Big guy: Ma'am, does this belong to you? Me: yes sir. Big guy: Is this a parachute? Me: yes sir. Big guy: Do you use this to jump off of bridges? Me: no sir, airplanes. Big guy: Do you plan on wearing it on this flight? Me: no sir. It's a start. While adult stem cells don't offer the same promise that embryonic stem cells do, sometimes a foot in the door is a door that's partially open instead of all the way closed. We're talking about athletes....not all of the human race. There are traits that occur more commonly among certain groups than another. Maybe, on the whole, black people are better athletes than whites. If you put the Irish National basketball team up against the Lakers, I'd be bettin' on us. Maybe it's culture or maybe it's something in the genes. Who knows???? But there's no doubt that there are differences among groups of people (grouped by whatever criteria you want). We southerners prob'ly eat a helluva a lot more catfish and hushpuppies than those damn yankees do. I'm not offended by the supposition that that's the case. It's true. I think that we women aren't as physically strong as men, on the whole, but I also think that we're a helluva lot smarter (but that's just me).... Here in Arkansas, there are a lot of people who ain't too bright with r e a l l y funny looking foreheads. In the hills in the wintertime it can be hard to wander far from home, and family trees don't always fork as they should. As an Arkansan, though, I have to look at it and say, "heh....damn hillbillies need to find some other way to relieve that particular pain...." But do I get offended? No. Even if it's said in a hateful tone. Know why? Because it's true....lol. Sometimes we just have to realize that the world ain't a homogenous heap. Be thankful that we're a colorful lot, and learn to be glad that maybe black athletes are faster than whites. Even laugh at the fact that women are smarter than men...heh, heh, heh.... In my mind, it's not so much an issue of whether people are "moved" by suffering but of what the answers to this suffering are. Giving 3/4 of what you have will not solve the problem I don't believe. And there's really nothing wrong with some degree of suffering. I, personally, pretty much come from where the rubber meets the road. If you have a problem, you do your best to solve it. The governments job is to make sure everyone has the option to work because jobs are available. It's up to the individual to be a slack ass or not be a slack ass. New word.. It seems to me that it's no more pessimistic than telling people the truth about the dangers of sex. I agree that we need to educate teenagers. But unfortunately, simply telling them what "can" happen to them doesn't seem to go very far. At least it's honest though. The other situation seems to be manufactured for a purpose that's not necessarily in a person's best interest.... And there are people who believe a cow's life is as sacred as a humans. To them killing a cow is murder. Should you not have the choice to eat a steak because of someone else's belief? I think a blastocyst is no more sacred than a cow, and the cow is, without a doubt, more alive. People can believe anything they want. A belief that a ball of cells is alive is based more on a moral and religious stance than a scientific one. My big toe is alive when connected to my body. Dagny's a junior medical student at an Osteopathic medical school. I bet she could fill you in on some of the specifics. Their medical education really isn't that much different than ours I don't think. But they do get trained in manipulations....which can be a good thing :) Their training is 4 years and is pretty much set up like allopathic schools--2 years of didactics and 2 years of clinical training.
