  1. Yeah....me too. My little boy doesn't want to live there either. That's the point. linz -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. A liberal is just a conservative who's been to jail
  2. Gonna interject.... I just finished reading the 2nd book by Lois Lowry to my little boy...."Gathering Blue." It followed "The Giver." The Giver was my favorite of the two, but they're both excellent for helping kids learn about rules in society and different kinds of communities--really about social policy. Well, The Giver was based on a community in which, for safety purposes and equality, almost all individuality had been eliminated. People weren't burdened with the responsibility of making choices. That would be too dangerous. They had gone to sameness. In this community people were relatively happy, though ignorant. Since they had lived this way for generations, they had no idea what they were missing.... It was a pleasant place with no crime, no choice, and really not much risk. Just thought I'd share. My little boy's 8. He really grasped the concepts pretty well and discusses his thoughts about these communities pretty easily. It's a great book to read to you 10-12 y/o's.... Now you can all get back to your previous discussion. -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. A liberal is just a conservative who's been to jail
  3. Those toys....the Lincoln logs and stuff....are the best. My kid's getting MORE Lincoln logs this year, some blocks (even though he's 8--it's fun to build stuff with blocks), a new stronger wagon for hauling stuff in and out of the woods, a BB gun, and of course the coveted XBox 360--although last night he said he may not want that. I'll have to do some fast figurin' if he scratches that off his list. Haven't spent the money on it yet, but I don't know WHAT I'll replace it with . Can't forget the cheap chess set for family game night--which is just about every night during the winter. Last night I made him cry, though, when he started having to mortgage his measly properties in Monopoly -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. 4. Typing. Just typing. I typed a novel for Jack Butler..."Living in Little Rock with Miss Little Rock." The perk(???) was that I also got to babysit for extra money. Painting the college dorms. Mindless. Receptionist for an interior designer. The WORST mindless job I ever had. Patient care tech for adolescent inpatient psych. THAT was a fun job. All you need's a BA or BS....or something along those lines. linz -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. A liberal is just a conservative who's been to jail
  5. I think about how I'd feel if that were to happen to me. If I were wrongly accused and convicted of a crime that carried a sentence of life in prison or the death penalty, the horror would be in being convicted and sent to prison. I think that whether I stayed in prison for the rest of my life or executed wouldn't really matter to me, because either way my life would be fucked. If it were my child, I'd rather that he be alive in prison. The problem is more in the wrongful conviction, though, than in the sentence when the options are life in prison or death, imho.... linz -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. 6. And maybe you should see the little 3 y/o whom I treated in the ER a week ago. I promise you I've seen people die. I've seen gruesome. I've been the one to treat people that someone else tried to kill, and I've been the one to treat the person who did the killing. I've seen what I think is evil. I don't care to visit someone on death row. But I do have enough experience where the rubber meets the road to form legitimate opinions on things like the death penalty. I do not have a strong opinion about the death penalty, but my thoughts are not haphazard about it either. I think a lot of innocent people are convicted of crimes and sentenced. It's horrible that people are convicted wrongly. -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. A liberal is just a conservative who's been to jail
  7. I don't disagree that taking life is wrong. I also don't disagree that taking away someone's freedom is wrong. I'm not sure how I feel about the death penalty. But I certainly see the difference between capital punishment and murder. They're not the same....especially when people know what the likely consequences of their actions are going to be. I see the difference between being sentenced to death by the state, as a punishment for a crime, and being killed as a follow-up on a threat made by another citizen. You say that killing is wrong...as though it's an a priori truth...and that using it as a punishment doesn't mitigate that. I also say that locking a person up is wrong. Why is it not wrong when used as punishment? Once a person has committed a crime, the rules change. Best to know in what ways they're likely to change before doing something like smuggling heroin in Singapore. linz -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. 8. You argue that the fact that a person committed a crime does not change that taking a person's life is wrong, that killing is wrong whether sanctioned by the state as a form of punishment or not. Why then does the fact that a person committed a crime change that holding a person captive is wrong? Using that line of reasoning as your argument, any person can say with equal validity that it's wrong for the state to uphold any form of punishment.... The strength of that argument doesn't hold water, imho. linz -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. A liberal is just a conservative who's been to jail
  9. Yeah....my first 700 or so jumps have mostly been out of a Cessna. It's great! You get to be real cozy with the cute boys during the 22.5 minute climb to altitude. Just gotta make sure they don't accidentally touch your boobie. I use to even take my board out of the Cessna. Followed tandems out even. It improves ones flexibility and spatial relations. 10. I've acually been thinking about this a lot. And I don't think I'm a big enough person to be able to forgive a person who would murder my child. As much as, in theory, it seems like a good idea--rational and right--I just wouldn't have it in me. By looking at how I've responded to lesser situations in the past, and that there's at least one person for whom I think the death penalty is too small a price, if someone really hurt/killed someone I love, like my son, I'd only wish the worst for him. linz -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. 14. If you took a person and held him in captivity against his will, that'd also be against the law. However, we hold people in jail. 15. So, you don't think there's anything wrong with doing it, yet you think it's ok for there to be a law against it. I guess I just don't get that attitude. I don't think I ever said that I was in favor of our current drug laws. There are other laws that I think are ridiculous too. But I still try to live within the law, most of the time (depending upon how concerned I am about consequences of doing something that's illegal that I don't personally think is wrong).... linz -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. 16. really? What crimes do you have a desire to commit that you don't only because you fear punishment? Is it because you want to commit evil deeds, but are scared. Or do you think some laws are unjust? Sometimes I'd like to drive faster on the way home...lol...but don't for fear of punishment. But honestly....it was fun to smoke a little weed back in college. I don't think there's anything wrong with that, but now I have too much to lose to risk getting caught. So I don't smoke dope because of the potential consequences. I don't care to commit evil deeds, but not everything that is illegal is evil. linz -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. A liberal is just a conservative who's been to jail

  18. 7 to 5 is typical. This month it's 8 to 8 (either am-pm or the other way around). When I'm on call, it's usually 7am until 1:30 the next afternoon--oops 30.5 hours, but who's counting. I don't necessarily get the 4 days off in a 4-week period all the time. Only once did I work 28 days without a day off. But I still think we have pretty good hours for residents.... linz -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. A liberal is just a conservative who's been to jail
  19. I guess I'm just annoyed by different things than you are. We rode to Jefferson, TX a month or so ago for the Boo Benefit. It was pretty fun, but there were a LOT of people there all decked out in some pretty pricey get-ups fitting into a particular mold that I thought was funny. There were some chicks in particular on some NICE bikes who obviously weren't very experienced riders...or maybe I just noticed them more because of the catty nature of women . I find that particular crowd amusing, but not annoying. Maybe they do have an attitude that I don't recognize since I tend to be oblivious to such things. I suppose from the perspective of someone who pretty much doesn't do the cliques, who certainly doesn't look like a biker of any sort but enjoys riding, I DO get bothered by all the people who have an attitude toward me because I bought a Harley. I don't get why anyone cares! Having ridden my first bike, a Yamaha, for a good decade and my second, a Suzuki, for a good many more years, it baffles me when someone wants to try to tell me how much better performance they get out of this bike, or how much more power they get out of that.... I have no need to put anyone down to build myself up. But that's what I get from a lot of other people. I never got that attitude when I rode a Suzuki. In my mind, the "pretty" people out on their bikes may put off a certain arrogant vibe....but it's that outright obnoxious attitude that I'm talking about that really, really, really gets under my skin. I am with you on this....if you're out riding and having fun, then get on with it!!! Have a great day. Hell, I'll wave at you any day, aggie Dave.... linz -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. A liberal is just a conservative who's been to jail
  20. I understand your point, but I guess the only attitude problems I see on a regular basis don't come from people who are new riders, whatever they're trying to look like. I think that everybody has to start riding sometime, and if they're trying to look like a rider, how is that different from somebody who starts skydiving and tries too hard to look like a skydiver? So what if somebody wants to drop some cash on a bike and he doesn't know the ins and outs of the bike. He wants to ride! I don't see a problem with that. In my experience, these people's attitudes are simply based in their newness to the experience. What's much more bothersome is people who think they are REAL riders--whether they wear the patches or not-- who can't get over what the next guy is riding and wearing. But maybe that you don't get it demonstrates MY point.... Peace~ linz -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. A liberal is just a conservative who's been to jail
  21. You think my little rant is bad, you should hear what a true patch-wearer says about the wanna-be riders! That's the point....why is a "true patch-wearer" any more of a rider than "wanna-be" (whatever that is) riders? I'm saying that if you ride, then have fun....that's great. Why does it matter why a person buys any bike he buys. Usually there is some "image" factor involved, imho. You buy what you like, for whatever reason. What I've seen of this thread is that the snobbiest riders are not in the group that you're targeting.... linz -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. 22. Exactly my point. You guys are whining about not getting a wave. Maybe it's because the guy got sick of hearing the comments like this. Uh-huh. Yep....that's what I'm sayin' too. I have never heard a single negative comment from one of my Harley-riding buddies about anybody else's choice of bike. But I hear that garbage all the time from people who ride Hondas, Yamahas, Kawasakis.... linz -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. 23. Heck Dave....how in the world is it any different than people who ride Kawasakis, Hondas, etc thumbing their noses at us who ride Harleys. I think it's hilarious that people get worked up about what Harley riders do and say when they turn around and do the same damn thing. I've not put anyone down for what they ride, but I sure as hell get a lot of it from people who want to run down people who ride Harleys.... Or maybe it's okay if the shit's flying in our direction. It's really no different than everything else in the world that people get snobbish over--what dz you frequent, where you go to college, what neighborhood you live in, where your children go to school, what kind of tennis shoes you buy, and whose label is on your shirt, what you do for a living, whether you wear make-up or not.... Why would you care if somebody who hasn't ridden all his life chooses a Harley. Is that a reason for you to run him down? What if he chooses a Kawasaki for his first bike....is that more honorable somehow? I just think it's an issue worth getting over.... linz -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. 24. Sorry--couldn't resist. Christel, it's not guns that are the problem, it's the mindset of the people who commit those kinds of crimes. With or without a gun, they will find a way to kill their intended victims. I think that's probably not true most of the time. I think a lot of people are probably killed with guns who wouldn't be killed if there were no guns. BUT, I still think that saving us from ourselves by taking away guns is the wrong response. People have to have choices, even if some people choose very, very badly. More regulation of our lives is not an acceptable solution in my mind. linz -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. A liberal is just a conservative who's been to jail
