I've been wondering what women talk about with each other all my life, when they run off to the bathroom in groups, or have their secret slumber parties. Thanks to the Women's Forum, now I know. Interesting....My most recent bathroom conversations with my girlfriends have been about intubation (on really fat people) and lumbar puncture techniques, about the fact that nobody really pays attention to the 80-hour work week rule, about interns being *the* ER coverage at our hospital, about how long I should treat the yeast that grew out of my patient's sternal wound. What's worse...or at least as bad...was when, playing scrabble, I used the word "et" when they were my only letters left. My mother challenged the word, and it was in Webster's as a slang for past tense of eat. LOLOL! We hear all the rednecks talking about how they "done et" and laugh because it's funny. Scoop is very right. There are well over 20 drugs and their derivatives, which are "whiteish" in nature and found in powder form. Whether it's heroin, cocaine, refined crystal meth nobody knows until it's tested. And by testing I do not mean "tasting" That's a television thing. NO law enforcement officer is going to ruin their career/life by ingesting any amount of drug to jail a criminal. Officers at road checks for drunk drivers don't take swigs out of bottles to test the contents. LEOs are NOT trained to taste the product. For the most part, you cannot tell from the taste, it's the effects. The airport security personnel(nor the police) are going to taste a potentially lethal chemical compound. Her joke was in piss-poor taste. As for there being no law against transporting flour in condoms,, whether it's in a suitcase or your rectum, I'm sure there's no law against having a sillouette of a handgun cut out of aluminum foil and placed in a magazine in your backpack. It's just stupid!! Try saying "Hi" to your friend Jack at the airport. Hmm. Well, I guess I shouldn't be able to transport a plant (of any sort, you name it) to my mother then either. I mean, It's green and leafy, and these security folks may have never seen a plant that has abusable characteristics to know the difference by looking. They're not very well trained if they're looking for drugs and can't do any better than that. Sounds like Barney Fife to me. Bottom line. She was silly, got caught out. Why should she get any damages as it was a result of her stupidity. Because she shouldn't have been jailed for even one week for carrying flour in condoms. The problem, Jeffrey, in your thinking is that people with addictions see many more people using alcohol or other substances with NO problems at all. You say you drink. So do most of us here. Some of us find, after experimenting with alcohol, that LO and BEHOLD there's a problem.... Didn't know it before ever having started drinking. Whether that means they were addicted BEFORE using the substance....heck, I don't know. But people don't not start drinking recreationally because they know of someone out there who is an alcoholic. Did you???? Surely you could have learned from the example of some poor chap who couldn't handle his liquor? Same with other drugs. People see more people partying and having a good time with these drugs than they see people having problems. So, just like with alcohol, they partake. Then....LO and BEHOLD, they find there's a problem. There they are with an addiction that they didn't know they were gonna have. It sneaks up on a person that way. Being acquainted with people who have been in this boat, I try not to be so harsh. Where I have a problem, though, is with people who "once" had a problem, and go back again. Either way, it's not comparable. This girl, despite her poor (juvenile) judgment, was jailed for 3 weeks for a prank that neither harmed nor threatened to harm anyone. It was stupid, imho, to pull her stunt. But there's NO excuse for keeping her in jail to prove a point, or to teach a lesson to her and others who might question the authority of the authorities????? It's such a difficult problem. We give a lot of lip service to racism (and sexism and all the other -isms) that is really superficial, imho. And I've tried to teach my son not to make judgments about people based on appearance, whether that be color of skin, what car they come to school in, what clothes they wear and so on. However, he spent most of his days until he was 7 yrs old at Montessori school, where there were black kids, white kids, Guatemalan kids, Chinese kids....even a black and Chinese mixed kid....and they all got along as though they were all the same. Now we've moved to a rural town in south Arkansas--my hometown--and my child is in the public schools here. Now he wonders why the black kids aren't as smart as the white kids and why the black kids are "so bad." This is where a superficial lesson on racism just isn't an adequate explanation. This is where only a real explanation of where the class divisions have come from will give him a way to sort through his now-prejudiced beliefs. While I can understand how things became as they are, I still think that people who are not doing better by now are the only ones who can make the changes in their own lives. Black history month isn't going to pull anyone up by his/her bootstraps. Black History Month is for people who are already doing better, imho--for the kids in Montessori school and the like. I think the talk about racism has made the field more equal for people who are willing to excel. It doesn't equalize anything for people who don't. After my bf succumbed to the stresses of spring pulling, and I found that I just wasn't strong enough myself for the task, my mind went to work....and I found that pull-up cords make the job a snap! So, for future reference, anyone who finds herself (or himself) with the job of trampoline putter-togetherer. Pull-up cords are the ticket!
