How about this....our education system has enough on its hands just trying to teach a bunch of kids, who couldn't care less, how to read and write. The schools' resources have to stretch a long way as it is. I think we should be lighting a fire under PARENTS to teach their children how to get along in the world. I see it as MY responsibility to teach my child how to have a phone conversation, how to get along with people in general, how to make decisions about what's right and wrong, and all of that "daily living" kinda stuff. I think that parents who shirk their responsibilities as parents and expect that the government should pick up the ball are more of a problem than the schools. ....and then there are people who weren't circumcised and wish they had been. Parents usually do the best they can when they make difficult decisions for their children. Do kids grow up wishing their parents had made LOTS of different decisions for them? Of course they do. But that's life. It's funny that anyone would get so worked up about the "trauma" associated with circumcision, when it is far less traumatic than being born, especially if you were born vaginally. Perhaps we should next label people as bad parents who delivered their children vaginally.... I am certain that circumcision is painful, and I am also certain that circumcision is not usually necessary. BUT it's not so painful as to traumatize a child anymore than the event of his birth or many events that he will experience in his lifetime. Children develop coping strategies based, in early life, on how their parents respond to them and comfort them during painful events. Should we completely shelter our children from painful events??? I don't think so. I'm not an advocate of circumcision, but to claim that a person is a bad parent who circumcises his/her son is really, really not very rational. As far as I recall, there's more than "a piece of skin" involved. There is a rich supply of nerves and some blood vessels that are removed too. well....there are cutaneous nerves and the blood vessels that supply the foreskin. They'd be pretty useless without the tissues that they supply.... Neither affects the functioning of the penis. There are many, many things that people do for religious reasons. That some circumcisions (though not most) are done for religious reasons does not make it similar to removing a girl's clitoris. What you wrote could apply equally well to female "circumcision"; just the removal of some bits of tissue. Most of us consider that to be mutilation. Calling it mutilation is being a tad dramatic, dontcha think? It is, afterall, just skin....a piece of skin that I personally like, but skin nonetheless. I won't perform a circumcision, because it's a painful procedure that is unnecessary. But in no way does it disfigure or handicap a person....unless there's a very unfortunate slip of the knife.....ewww. There is evidence that shows medical benefits to circumcision, and there is evidence that shows medical benefits to leaving the foreskin intact. Like you said, the AMA doesn't recommend circumcision, but it also does not condemn the procedure as something that is harmful to a human being. It's a personal decision made by parents, who usually want to do what's best for their children. Dagny....that really stinks. My first thought is that junior year of medical school is *really* tough. You don't need worries like what you're talking about in this particular year of your life. Getting into a less stressful living situation might be a good idea. But I'd probably be hesitant to leave myself (like you seem to be) because it's not really in my nature to be so easily defeated (lol....I know that leaving doesn't mean you're defeated, but I'm kinda hard-headed). You have no idea who's doing this stuff, though, and that's kind of scary. Honestly....looking back on the necessary stresses of 3rd year, getting rid of any other stresses that you can is a REALLY good idea. My $.02 is to find another living situation. I've never seen a child sedated for a circumcision. After seeing many of them, I will NEVER perform an unnecessary circumcision on a child. The American Academy of Pediatrics policy on circumcision says "Potential medical benefits of circumcision are not compelling enough to warrant the AAP to recommend routine newborn circumcision." The American Academy of Family Physicians takes the same position. While there are some studies showing some possible benefits to circumcision that have already been stated, keeping the penis clean is as effective as circumcision for most. Others....like penile cancer for instance, is SO rare in all men, circumcised or not, that it's not a compelling reason for having this procedure done. A cowboy in Oregon got pulled over by a State Trooper for speeding. I don't think I'm particularly warm-hearted about issues of people sucking off the system and things like that. But I just don't understand why people care if homeless people sleep in a place like a train station. What is so wrong with that? It's not a homeless shelter...that's right. It doesn't cost the rest of us a penny to let them sleep in the train station. Homeless shelters require funding. And, at least around here, there's not nearly enough space in homeless shelters for people who need shelter. It's difficult for me to grasp how people can be so mean-spirited as to kick people out of a place like the train station when all they're seeking is shelter. Are people routinely being robbed and murdered there??? Somehow I don't think so. I'm sure it's nothing more than people wanting to pretend that other part of society doesn't exist.... If we treat certain people like they're subhuman, we'll come to believe they are, and then maybe in our own minds we can justify these kinds of actions.... I think you're overlooking the fact that if a drug company creates a product that uses this virus successfully and reliably to cure cancer, they'll make LOTS of money. But I think it's true that if people are unable to make money for the research and development of new medications, we won't see new medications come onto the market. Good eyes, being heads-up, prepared, and knowledgeable are the things that immediately come to my mind when I think of things that make me safer.
