  1. Don't consider skydiving as an escape from my job (C# programmer) - I consider it a suplement to my sanity But I've been programming alot longer than my interest in skydiving... Jen Arianna Frances

  4. I had surgery on my leg last year - it was very minor, just a big cut that was stitched up. I was down and out for 6 weeks. My mom had the same thing you had done last year - and she was not able to walk again without pain/crutches for 3 weeks - let alone be able to jump up and down on it. Take your time - its not worth it otherwise. Jen Arianna Frances
  5. http://www.cnn.com/2005/POLITICS/10/27/miers.nominations/index.html Miers withdraws Supreme Court nomination Bush: Decision confirms 'my deep respect and admiration' Thursday, October 27, 2005; Posted: 9:24 a.m. EDT (13:24 GMT) WASHINGTON (CNN) -- President Bush on Thursday accepted the withdrawal of Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers, according to a statement from the White House. In her letter to the president, Miers said she was "concerned that the confirmation process presents a burden for the White House and its staff and it is not in the best interest of the country." "It is clear that senators would not be satisfied until they gained access to internal documents concerning advice provided during her tenure at the White House -- disclosures that would undermine a president's ability to receive candid counsel," Bush said. "Harriet Miers' decision demonstrates her deep respect for this essential aspect of the constitutional separation of powers -- and confirms my deep respect and admiration for her." Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist said he respected Miers' decision and looked forward to working with the president to quickly picking a new nominee. We remain ready to fulfill our duty to provide advice and consent on judicial nominees," the Tennessee Republican said. "And the Supreme Court still awaits its next justice -- a highly qualified nominee who is committed to upholding the Constitution and who believes in the limited role of a judge to interpret the law and not legislate from the bench." Miers, 60, was nominated earlier this month by President Bush to replace retiring Justice Sandra Day O'Connor on the high court. (Profile) Bush's decision to nominate Miers, his White House counsel and a longtime adviser, had divided his supporters, many of whom wanted a nominee with a clear record of opposition to abortion. On Wednesday, White House spokesman Scott McClellan had dismissed the suggestion that senators were reluctant to come out in support of Miers because they are unimpressed with her as a nominee. "I think you're seeing a lot of members of the Senate saying, 'We want to hear what she has to say in the hearings,' before they make a judgment," he said. "With Harriet Miers, there are many in the Senate that simply did not know her previously, although she is widely respected within the legal profession." Senators had hoped to begin confirmation hearings the week of November 7. Arianna Frances
  6. Can't the same insurance be used for something that is far more likely to happen? such as a car accident? Most of those insurance plans don't cover skydiving anyway - be sure to read the fine print. Jen Arianna Frances
  7. sounds about right... this is the pits Jen Arianna Frances
  8. I was in Rutland, VT on Sunday - woke up to 4 inches of snow! It was very pretty... Okemo was running its lifts Wish I could ski this season... hell, wish I could do anything close to fun right about now Jen Arianna Frances
  9. I've travelled a bit through airports with my rig. The key is to keep quiet. I always tell them its a parachute as it goes through the machine. I also can't go through airport security points because I have metal in my body - and I'm always travelling with a laptop computer. I've never had any problem than at Ontario, CA airport - where they got quite the giggle over the metal in my body and my being allowed to parachute as a result but... its best to keep quiet until you see that they may do something questionable. This year I heard of the girlfriend of a skydiver who had her rig conviscated and the reserve popped - which I'm sure may have been due to her mouthing off to the TSA people, from her reaccount of the incident. Silence is key! Jen Arianna Frances
  10. I'm about an hour and a half from there - I'm not a fan of Hartford. Not much to do there, but since I've only ever driven out that way for my cat rescue stuff or to go to IKEA, I guess I'm not much of a help. Hopefully someone else can pipe in. Its unfortunately a bit far from the coast which is where all my favorite spots in CT are. Good luck with your interview! Jen Arianna Frances
  11. They don't say it. I've sat in job interviews where the people we are interviewing are weeded out according to sex. "well, we already have 2 guys in the architect area, bringing in a girl might change the great chemistry they have going on"... That train of thought didn't sit well with me and thankfully that manager was later fired. It does happen. Jen Arianna Frances
  12. I have seen so many female male managers who don't seem to know their ass from their elbow when it comes to doing their job and it makes me wonder if they were hired just to avoid it being said that they were sexist. It goes both ways. Jen Arianna Frances
  13. Anybody that can get to see DM in concert should do whatever they can to get tickets. I saw them in 1998 and it was life altering. I got the new CD last night - its great! Jen, waves 'hi' to Arlo Arianna Frances
  14. I don't think that's a bad idea. Why don't you quit while you're ahead there sunshine. I hope you really can't be stupid enough to alienate yourself on the largest skydiving website in the world right? Or maybe you are... Jen Arianna Frances

  16. Actually, push-ups are working your chest muscles more than anything. The best thing to do is stretch and make sure you have FULL range of motion. I work out with a personal trainer twice a week and frequently have this problem. I also hurt my shoulder this summer on a botched landing and know that I have to be sure to not aggrevate it. If you can do a pull up you should be ok - if you can fully move your arms from at your side to over your head without any stiffness or pain its fine - but if not - don't jump. In all seriousness, its not worth it. I've jumped with a sore shoulder which I thought would be fine, but the wind pressure affects you in ways you can't imagine on the ground. My motto has always been, if I'm not 100%, I don't jump. Jen Arianna Frances
  17. National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance Isn't that a bit of an oxymoron, or am I missing something? I didn't know such an organization existed until I saw a woman associated with this group arguing with a well respected doctor on MSNBC that being fat had no effect on ones health. "I'm going to be fat and happy like my 80 year old mother in law" I just checked out the 'hall of fame' on their website, where they list Mama Cass of the Mamas and the Papas as a 'famous fat person' - who happened to die of major heart failure due to her poor eating habits and lack of taking care of herself. But being fat had no obvious effect on her health - right? I hope I'm not the only one that finds it distrubing that a group of people are actually trying to debunk what the medical community has been saying for years now. But they must be winning considering, at least, the US is the most overweight its ever been. Jen Arianna Frances
