I think one more thing we have in common is that we all sell the other stuff in our life to but jump tixs! I am putting up my Stang which I have been working on for four years! I am going to cancel my cable, thats a jump per month! Whatever else I don't need is on the chopping block!

I feel that noone should urge anyone to jump if they're nervous or worried, but that is human nature (they're not necessarily trying to pressure you, just to support you and ease your fears). She shouldn't have jumped. If she jumped and fandango'd she should sue. If she cutaway and opened under a reserve full of holes, she should sue. If she opens with line twist, isn't smart enough to cutaway or put more fabric overhead, that's her decision (or indecision as it may be). I will not likely ever consider suing a DZ or another skydiver. I can only imagine doing so (and this is a stretch since I don't think this can ever happen) under conditions of obvious gross negligence or malicious behavior (sabatoge). We all know how unlikely either of these items ocurring is, so we'll never sue. You got in, you got out, you have the problem... Not the DZ!

Hey Sis (and everyone else) If the letter was not clear, and I think it was, I in NO way whatsoever wanted to link maintenance to the Skydive Texas' crash. As I had jumped their plane, it just made methink more than most accidents. There are plenty of other aircraft that have gone down because of negligence. BUT that plane was not one of them. As I said at the end of the email, I will fly on Tom's load anyday. As it has been pointed out, people don't want to talk about the depressing stuff....so let's go back to sex...something that will certainly make us all safer jumpers, right? whatever. Malachi

Yup jumped a round once! Only once it was a reserve ride. I won't ever jump another round on pupose! My knee is stell healing two months later. Hats off to all of you that do!

This was Jimmy Tyler in the mid-80's although it's been done numerous times. Rod Pack ended up on the cover of Life magazine because of his jump in 1964(or there abouts). Jimmy died a couple of years later doing a base jump from Half-Dome. I heard Greg Gasson is actually wired in too. If you see his videos, he always has long sleeve shirts on and never loses contact with the rig. That would hide the wires pretty easily. I did a see a video of a guy who actually jumped without a rig. This was way back in the 60s-70s. He had a partner who would jump with the rig and hold it out so it stayed stable in freefall. The guy without a rig was wearing a harness (kinda like a passenger tandem harness). Webbing ran up his arms and out his sleeves. At the end of these webs was a couple of metal D-clips (?). He would dive after the guy holding the rig and then clip onto it once he had it. The parachute was mounted on a thin board so he could grab onto it when he pulled. Seemed like a very stupid thing to do. Falling after a spinning, potato chipping rig would be even more foolhardy.

Skreamer, You are misreading what I wrote about Jan. I met Jan twice and she was a wonderful person. I was saying that SHE DID EVERYTHING SHE COULD to stay safe. She DID NOT MAKE ANY MISTAKES. I used that tragedy as a reminder of how even a person as smart and aware as Jan can get killed. I feel horrible for her close friends and family. But I will not be disciplined by a rookie jumper for reminding people out there to please be safe on every jump. I am not registered since this is the first and last time I will post here. Jan touched the lives of a lot of people. I've never known anyone to go in until now and I only knew her over rec.skydiving. The internet is bringing a lot more of us together with even getting to jump with each other and she had a huge amount of friends at her home DZ and Nationally. Very Sad black skies ramon

This is a post that I hope will help in the cause of safety in this sport. There are dangerous trends that having been going on in this sport over the last five years. Ten years ago, no one dared to take unnecessary risks because the sport of skydiving presented itself with plenty of dangers of its own. Now, as the sport has developed better gear and training, people in it have found ways to make it more and more dangerous. Whether they do it by poorly maintaining their gear, or failing to get a gear check on EVERY JUMP, or going on jumps they should be avoiding(such as large RW or freefly jumps while a beginner), or by pulling low; it seems a sad inevitability that people are going to die in these preventable mistakes. I have seen many a new jumper be too timid to ask for a gear check for fear of looking "uncool" and I have seen people with a dozen jumps to their name go on large 8 way RW jumps, that they should be avoiding. Being a total safety nut is not at all "uncool". It is the safety nuts that get to live to see 10,000 jumps. The ones who casually shrug off safety with bravado are the ones you hear about who bounce after 1000 jumps. There is unavoidable risk in skydiving, and even safe and smart jumpers can still get killed. Jan Davis was a safe and smart jumper, but she still died from an incident that could happen to anyone. She did everything she could to avoid dying, but most jumpers do not. It is scary to think that there are at least another 20-25 people out there in our skydiving world, who will be gone by the end of this year. About 1 in 1000 of us die each year. My hope for the future of the sport is that safety is made number 1 by ALL jumpers of ALL experience levels. You must not wait for the crowd to shift though. You must take 100% resposibility for your own safety. Draw the line that you will not cross and then take another step back on the side of safety and maintain that level at all costs. If you do that, you just might live to see 10,000 jumps and your family and friends will never have to deal with that phone call telling them that you are gone forever.
