TK - I also don't remember ever seeing you with a smoke, didn't know you ever smoked but am glad you have quit for 11 years now. Yep - You can't play with it....I am positive that if I smoked one today, tomorrow I would be up to a pack a day again. After 25 years, I will still get the occasional twinge...it's really quite amazing. I take a deep breath like I am taking a long drag and that gets me over the craving. Just a few months ago I had a very weird thing happen. One of my habits when I smoked was to pat my shirt pocket when leaving my house or apartment...to make sure I had my butts with me. So, recently when I walked out of the house to go somewhere my hand went up and patted my shirt pocket. It just floored me. Hope all is well with you TK my old friend we should talk one of these days. Cheers, Murray

Never quit trying to quit until you succeed. Quit for 10 seconds at a time....Count to ten when you are having a strong craving...take deep breaths. Repeat if necessary. Quit for 10 minutes. An hour. A day. Another day. Before you know it, you'll have a bunch of days, weeks and years behind you. It was torture! But I am so grateful to be able to remain smoke-free...it is worth the aggravation. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

I just did the math for myself at 30 cigarettes a day...likely a bit low: 25 x 365 x30/day = 273,750 Cigarettes....over a quarter of a million cigarettes!! I am certain I would not have lived this long had I not quit...seeing that number reinforces my suspicion. 25 x 365 x $2/day average (they were under a buck a pack when I quit) = $18,250....not a huge, huge amount of money but enough for a new main every 2-3 years! -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

since I quit smoking on May 3, 1983....25 years and 2 months right about now as I butted out at about 3:30 pm. If you're trying to quit or thinking of it...it can be done!

Please let me know if you hear of a way to make an Ubuntu partition on a Mac that already has OSX Leopard & Windows. I've found ways to do this that would involve erasing and reinstalling the existing partitions, but I don't want to go that route. I've tried the Ubuntu bootable LiveCD, and I like the look and feel of it and would like to use it more often. Too bad you can't save settings or connect to the internet with a LiveCD, or I would use it much more often. I have a copy of Ubuntu running as a Virtual Machine using Fusion on my iMac if that counts...

You can buy an iSight off eBay or buy one of these new Logitech units that you can read about on this TUAW post.... Dogs and Cats Living Together You'll have to check the specs on this Logitech unit to make sure it is compatible with your G4 and 10.4. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

What I found more interesting about yesterday's keynote was the announcement of Snow Leopard, the next version of OS X. No new user features! They are going to make under the hood improvements to make better use of multicore chips and REDUCE the footprint of OS X to make it more efficient and reliable. I think that is an excellent move....concentrating on improving a good OS instead of adding more complexity/features. From Macrumors.com...... Apple has posted pages for Mac OS X Snow Leopard for both server and client and describe a bit of what users can expect from the next OS X release. Apple promises that Snow Leopard "dramatically reduces the footprint of Mac OS X, making it even more efficient for users, and giving them back valuable hard drive space for their music and photos." Some early screenshots from the Developer seed of Snow Leopard do indeed show significantly smaller application file sizes over current Leopard installations. Other features listed on Apple's site were largely touched on in the press release. The New York Times, however, reveals that Snow Leopard's big focus is taking advantage of the recent trend towards multi-core and parallel computer processes. Steve Jobs provided some information on Apple's direction: "We've added over a thousand features to Mac OS X in the last five years," he said Monday in an interview after his presentation. "We’re going to hit the pause button on new features." .... “The way the processor industry is going is to add more and more cores, but nobody knows how to program those things,” he said. “I mean, two, yeah; four, not really; eight, forget it.” According to Jobs, Apple has made a parallel-programming breakthrough. Specifically, Apple claims their new "Grand Central" technology is "way beyond what Nvidia or anyone else has." There had been talk from Nvidia's CEO that Apple may adopt their CUDA technology, but it appears that Apple's implementation may be more advanced. CUDA allows programmers to offload processing to the computer's graphics processors, which can be very powerful. Apple's focus on parallel computing comes at a natural time with Intel upcoming plans for Nehalem processors which will scale up to 8-core processors. Apple has announced that Snow Leopard will be delivered in "about a year". -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

Soft second goal that Fleury should have had...and Osgood robbed Gary Roberts...ROBBED him. Could easily be 2-1 Penguins....such is hockey. Should be a good third period. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

I just checked to see if the CBC coverage was available on iTunes...it is @ $1.99/game but it is the NBC coverage.....in the Canadian iTunes store....that just ain't right!!! You can see quite a bit of the CBC commentary and highlights on the cbc.ca website...just go to the sports and Stanley Cup area. This could now become a very interesting series... Fleury just had the game of his life when Osgood looked tentative and seemed to lack confidence (according to the CBC commentators). A hot goalie at the right time perhaps??? Malkin and Sykora combined on the winner...first points of the series...have they started to get on track? Should be a good Game Six!! I started watching with about 15 minutes left in the third when the Pens were still up 2-1. Then, the Wings tied it and made it 3-2 and I thought it truly was over. The pressure the Wings were putting on the Pens in the third was incredible. I have a lot more respect for Fleury after tonight's game. He truly was outstanding. 58 to 32 Shots on goal for the Wings! A well deserved First Star! Chuck, are you watching the games on NBC? Up here I watch the CBC coverage and hardly ever hear Crosby's name. I think the US networks are engaging in a whole bunch of star creation to drum up interest from the sounds of their commentary. The best shot I saw Crosby take was when he was offside and didn't hear the whistle. Between periods we have Don Cherry extolling the grinders that work their asses off, don't wear visors and give 100% every shift. So, we get a bit different perspective. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

So much for my prediction! Fleury played outstanding tonight for the Pens. Great game! -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

On the topic of leadership...out of all the new young talent in the league I think that Alexander Ovechkin is the one with the most potential to become a Mark Messier type leader. He has unbelievable skill, loves to bang and has the size (6'2", 217lbs) to do it. He's a guy that can tell a team to get on his shoulders and inspire the others to up their game. imo Crosby is also unbelievable skilled but I don't think he has that leadership quality...or if he will ever have it. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

Chuck, They will have to tread an extremely fine line if they decide to get physical. Taking penalties against the Wings isn't a great way to beat them imo. I think the young guns have to show their stuff if they want to win and Marc Andre Fleury can't give up goals like the Wings game-winner on Saturday. Murray
-
The Pens HAD to win Saturday to have a chance. There is no way they will take 3 of 3 against the Wings machine. I predict it is all over in Game 5. Osgood is a fine goaltender .... and the team in front of him makes him a lot better still. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! I have to say that the above was your best one of the season!!! If only it would come true.... Nick, Triple fatality in Ontario in 1992/3?? Steve West, Kelvin Brundrett and a tandem passenger. Kelvin went in trying to save the tandem pair and was awarded the Carnegie Medal for bravery. Was there three that went in in Antarctica or just two? I also remember hearing about a 3 way that went in in S. Africa way back when as I heard it when I started jumping..1980. That one I don't know about. Murray

Thank-you for bringing this to my attention and giving me some motivation to start riding my bike again. I don't know if this is recognized up here in Canada but the kids don't have any activities after school that I have to pick them up from tomorrow so I am going to ride my bike tomorrow. I have a nice ride of about 25 leisurely minutes almost all on bike trails. Cheers, Murray

What I do is click on "Buy Song" or "Buy Album". This puts it into your shopping cart. ..NB - You have to have One-Click shopping turned off to do this. Then, before I buy I listen again ... sometimes I remove them from the cart and don't buy, sometimes I buy, sometimes I leave them there to think about for a while longer. You can pick which songs you want to buy out of the cart without buying everything so this has been my approach. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey
