Perhaps a dumb question, but... What is a glitter bomb?
-
I don't know... It seems to be a pretty normal tendency to want to feel good, as opposed to feeling bad. And the placebo effect can be pretty powerful. Sometimes simply believing that something will make you feel better, will actually make you feel better.

50 beautiful virgins, and a life time of free beer for all
Shotgun replied to James.UWE's topic in The Bonfire
I wouldn't be too sure of that. And of course it depends on what alcohol percentage the beers had, and over what time frame you drank them in. -

When you say "both" sides, which two sides do you mean? Obviously one of them is evolution (and I assume you specifically mean human evolution, or do you mean evolution in general?), but what do you think is the other side that should be presented? -
Hey, I was wondering how I got grouped with you two pervs.

I come here expecting a nice, clean thread, and instead I find skymama talking about going down on sweaty cock. I feel so dirty now.

Help me add movies to my Blockbuster rental queue
Shotgun replied to Anvilbrother's topic in The Bonfire
I'd have to revisit the film. It's not fresh in my mind at the moment. Well, I think that what you said about their movies pretty much summed it up - interesting characters and mood, but no real ending. I was completely engrossed while watching it, thinking "what a great movie"... but then it ended, and I just sat there thinking, "What???" -

I feel the same way about a lot of the Coen Brother's films. The seem to focus on characters and mood and do incredible work there, but I sometimes think they don't feel their movies need endings and they just let them sort of wander. Damnit, Paul. I was hoping you were going to explain it to me, not agree with me. If nothing else, the movie was worth watching just for the scene of Leo with his Tommy gun. (perhaps a spoiler for anyone who hasn't seen it) -

Speaking of gangster films, I recently watched Miller's Crossing, and I have to say that I didn't get it. But I thoroughly enjoyed watching it, and it keeps bugging me that maybe I missed something, so I think I'll have to watch it again soon. (Not sure if I'm recommending it or not.) Oh, and I agree with Inglourious Basterds. Fun movie. -

Looking at my recent Netflix history, some of the movies that I gave 4 or 5 stars: Stranger than Fiction (Will Ferrell, but actually good) Star Trek (the most recent one) Confessions of a Dangerous Mind (about the Gong Show dude, strange story) A Face in the Crowd (oldie, recommended by quade) Days of Wine and Roses (old drama) Flying Down to Rio (old musical, with a really cool dancing-on-planes scene) Outsourced (cute comedy) Cherry Blossoms (German with subtitles, nice scenery) Interstate 60 (indie comedy) Z Channel: A Magnificent Obsession (documentary) Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (old classic) Dr. Strangelove (no explanation needed) Delicatessen (French with subtitles, bizarre) -
There used to be a little convenience store in South Austin called the Whip In. Along with the normal convenience store stuff, they also carried whip-its and whip-it accessories. (I think the place is still there, but like most of the cool old South Austin dives, I believe it's now turned into some sort of hip/trendy place that has probably been written up in Rolling Stone, Playboy, etc. )

I really liked Bryson's "A Walk in the Woods." I also read his "The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid," which was pretty good too. "In a Sunburned Country" has been sitting on my shelf for a while now; maybe I'll read it soon. (So many books, so little time! ;-) I've never listened to an audiobook, but I've been tempted to since I've been doing a lot of driving lately. But, knowing my attention span, I'd probably miss half of the book by listening rather than reading. (At least with reading, I can easily go back and re-read when I realize I've been spacing out for several paragraphs, which is often the case. ) I'm currently reading "Up in the Air" by Walter Kirn, and it's had me laughing quite a bit. I've got the book, but I saw that it was also available on CD. Chuck Palahniuk and Nick Hornby are quite funny too, if any of their stuff is on CD.

I just watched it, and I think I'll give it a 4/5 too. And I agree with quade about the ending; I would have been disappointed if it was the typical sports story ending. Good movie.

Wow, sorry to hear about that, Dave. That is bizarre, and sad to hear that pop is gone.

What happened to pop??? He sent me some barbecue sauce once, but I never got to meet him. He did seem like a great guy.

I don't know.... probably pay off the house, make some "safe" investments, put most of it in savings.... I'd probably be a pretty boring lottery winner. But I think I've only bought one lottery ticket in the nine years that I've lived in CA, so my chances of winning are not too high.

I joined a similar lawsuit (against a gym) a long time ago. I ended up getting a check for $25, which is probably a little less than what they owed me, but I guess it was better than nothing. And actually, I was just satisfied to see that they weren't getting away with their BS.

Yeah, I was thinking that's probably a pretty good strip club song. Not necessarily because of the words, but now that you mention it . . .

I don't know.... At some point, it became fashionable for us to sit on our asses mindlessly surfing the 'net, posting in Internet forums about how we no longer sit on our asses mindlessly watching TV.

I was thinking that this might be the case, rather than gender. I think that I related to the movie a little bit more than I would like to admit. But then my 17-year-old nephew thought it was hilarious too, and I don't think that he has much in the way of experiences to relate it to; he probably just liked the goofiness of it.
-
I'm not a guy, but I went to see it with a guy (when it was at the theater), and we both thought it was pretty funny.
-
I agree. I thought the 3D was very tasteful and appropriate for that film. The RealD just gave it a more, well, "real" feel, without being over the top. Now, for the Alice in Wonderland trailer that they showed, I'm thinking I might want to go see that in IMAX 3D, since it would probably be more fun in a more exaggerated style.
-
I went to see it again last night in 3D (RealD). The 3D effect was fairly subtle (not the "jumping out of the screen" stuff I might have expected), but it was definitely worth seeing again in that format. I still couldn't be bothered with all of the "controversial" stuff that people keep talking about with this movie. To me, it's a touching love story with some cool sci-fi/fantasy stuff, and it's highly entertaining to watch. I just think it's a great movie. I've left the theater both times with a big smile on my face.
