CRW-Dog extraodinaire Jon Sikorsky recommends deploying high with a nerf football in your mouth. Spit it out and try to catch it. That way you're not just saying "Ok now right front riser, ok, now left," you actually have to react to something. Do CRW, great way to learn. Edit to change "best" to "great". "so much more stronger mentally" ? Unfortunately, at least in this thread, we can't claim to be "more smarter"? "I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher

Was going to continue on my thread about my new gear but thought I'd start a new one instead. I was going to have a tail pocket put on my L160 but after this last weekend decided that there's really no point other than to have another snazzy mod. My reasoning is that as a new jumper I'm probably going to be on the lower tier lock-ups for a while, so a bit longer deployment time is a plus. Then I don't have to do so much work initially to get low. Also, it's harder to pack. I will say that a freepacked opening sure puts you under a canopy in a jiffy. On one pack I did everything I could for a rapid deployment. It worked. There was as audible "whoa" from the rest of the plane looking out the back of the Casa as my body kicked up above the level of the canopy. So, what's the experienced perspective? Where is it useful? Who is it useful to? "I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher

Matt, I'll second that. The people at Kingsdale are a pretty cool group. "I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher

Let me get back to you later because I have to leave the office but I have a particular spot where you need to go for some great photography. This is away from all of the tourists and boring site-seeing BS you'll see in Sedona. I camped in this area for a week and hiked along the red-rock cliffs taking amazing pictures along the way. Sup Matt, the closest are Skydive Virginia and Skydive Orange. I jump ad Skydive VA and could carpool with you. I'm sure some others from my DZ will also offer. I'm going to CSS this weekend and will see if any others around can get together with you. PEACE, "I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher

Heading down for the THEM TOADSUCKERS get-together and for the 30th anniversary. Will see my old pals Portia and Lynn. How's the nightlife going to be? Should I just show up naked or will I be asked to leave? Found closest to naked picture I could. Me on left. "I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher

"Sure it does, as this is my strategy for survival" I think a good way to practice this would be to get in the back of a truck on the runway. Get up to about 60mph, climb onto the roof and have the driver slam on the brakes at the end of the runway. Practice makes perfect, and this is one that you definitely won't want to fuck up. Those are pretty sweet pants. Once I get ahold of a sewing machine and learn about stitches I'll have to come talk to you. My first job is to do some work on my makeshift freefly pants. Then it's on to something more interesting. peace "I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher

What I did was get vet wrap and wrapped it around my diveloops inside and then outside so it created an effective knob. When you sew the blocks on you'll probably want them higher on the risers so you have more range. I'll grab a link I saw on here to a nice set of blocks. I've never sewn anything on my risers myself. I don't know what the requirements are regarding work on your own main and risers but I would have my rigger do it or at least get his assistance and get a lesson to boot. Sticking things through your risers will make them weaker, better to do it right. Edit to add link: http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=464431#464431 Also, one point about blocks is that if they're too big then you cannot pull your slider over them to stow behind your neck. I fear that this thread is actually going to become serious. Riddler got it right. Mesh slider, tail pocket, free packed open nose. It goes "whammo." I thought about that this weekend because my friend's L143 was in there (same configuration) and I told a new jumper that I would lend him my spare canopy for a while. Was hoping he wouldn't grab the rig and jump it before I got there. peace, "I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher -

HOOK IT. Oh dammit, this is safety and training. Um...I'm assuming your hypothetical is that the surprise is sub 100 ft^2 that I would substantially load it. I would straight in approach and get ready to slide it in. In all seriousness (if that's even a word), if someone where to mistakenly grab my rig then there's a chance that they would die. I occassionally have a Lightning in there and if it were opened at terminal it probably would not be survivable. People really need to look at their gear and if borrowing, find out exactly what's in there and make SURE. "I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher -

Ah yes, found the link: http://www.greenharbor.com/fffolder/carkeet.html Some highlights: "The perfectly tiered Norfolk Island pine is a natural safety net, so if you're near New Zealand, you're in luck, pilgrim." (I was close with the "New England Fir") "If your search discloses no trees or snow, the parachutist's "five-point landing" is useful to remember even in the absence of a parachute. Meet the ground with your feet together, and fall sideways in such a way that five parts of your body successively absorb the shock, equally and in this order: feet, calf, thigh, buttock, and shoulder. " (Hey, they say to PLF, must be legit) "When parachutists focus on a landing zone, sometimes they become so fascinated with it that they forget to pull the ripcord. Since you probably have no ripcord, "target fixation" poses no danger. Count your blessings." Read and learn. "I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher

Think about front riser blocks also: http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=167385;search_string=dive%20blocks;#167385 http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=403663;search_string=dive%20blocks;#403663 http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=461105;search_string=dive%20blocks;#461105 Do a search for further discussion. My 150 jump opinion is that having your hands in a loop other than your brake toggle is kind of spooky while near the ground. I have vet wrap on my dive loops that give me a very effective handle. They pack bulkier than normal sewn blocks but it's just looks. I like doing CRW and find it handy to be able to easily grab and release. "I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher
