Does anyone do this at their DZ? Basically, if you clean the mats, help with manifest, boogies, whatever you can get a standby ticket. The caveat is you can only use it on less than full loads or certain times. Curious how places are doing this and what does/doesn't work. Extra $$$ and a tip, I'd be cool with that. Esp. considering the dude was in great shape, I bet. I'm just tired of lugging couch potatoes out the door, way over our posted weight, for not a dime more. My back is tired. Yeah, I wouldn't either. I get all the beefcakes since I'm the lightest TI and I have no shame in taking every cent of the fat tax since my Monday morning breakfast comes with a side of Ibuprofen. Help convincing my wife that jumping isnt a death wish
DJL replied to Ploy's topic in Safety and Training
The truth is that there's no way for a significant other to know what it's like for your hobby to dominate the relationship. They only see it as some vague concept that makes you a little dangerous and don't realize that they're going to be sitting on their asses while you're having a ton of fun. If you can get her into it then bonus but figure out how to make it her idea. There's a food that changes everything in a relationship, a wedding cake. Seriously, what is she going to tell her mother about the weekend, that she sat around an airport where nobody would talk to her because she's a wuffo? If you want her in, gonna have to fork up for that AFF course and first rig. I realize you're talking about the safety aspects but if you can't maintain your relationship well enough to stay in the sky then you can't stay in the sky enough to improve as a skydiver. Sure you can be safe doing two ways when you show up for one jump every other weekend... How long have you been jumping anyway? "I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher -
Help convincing my wife that jumping isnt a death wish
DJL replied to Ploy's topic in Safety and Training
There are two sides to that coin, the amount of time you spend with her to full-fill your promise of a relationship and the amount of time you spend skydiving to ensure that you're becoming a competent and safe jumper. You're not the first one to be in this situation and a promise said by someone long ago who has no idea what they're agreeing to becomes something like an unconscionable agreement. Does she know that instead of being able to put $5000 towards a house that you're getting a rig? Does she know that you're spending another $2700/year jumping? And how about your intentions? It takes time at the DZ just meeting people and being social in order to find people to jump with and improve. Is she going to sit there while everyone talks about skydive stuff. The truth is it's fucking boring to date a skydiver. Nope. They have to want to do it, they have to have the bug. You can't ask her to do this just because you want it. If she ends up liking it then great but you have to be OK with it if she doesn't and that may mean you don't skydive anymore. "I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher -
I voted "evil" since it's also the #1 cause of drowning and floods. "I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher

I'm skimming but I see one issue is the classic Male/Female bathroom door issue. What I see happening is what some places already do: Option 1, all toilets are unisex and consist of a toilet and a sink; Option 2, there's a sink lobby and enclosed toilets adjoin from there with one larger room being a urinal bank. This negates any issue of being in a room with organs that don't match how that urine is deposited. However, this should really be a non-issue. Nobody is getting raped by freaky tranny's in bathrooms and the only reason a kid would be scared by anything is because their parents overreact. Hey, if you want to plow a family they all need to be at least over 18...and under a certain age too. We have to have some law. "I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher

You vastly overestimate the budget and income of a young adult who goes out on the weekend for ladies night, even ones who have a solid career path. The low end per year of raising a child is $17k while the median income for a highschool grad is $30k/yr. The fact is that having a child at the wrong time more times than not locks that family into a cycle of lower education levels and standards of living. An that's beside the point that if a woman doesn't want to have a baby then she doesn't fucking have to have it. Unfortunately, the political pressure that this fabricated video has created has resulted in several women's health centers closing. The women in those areas now do not even have the contraceptive support that these centers offered. The result is more pregnancies and more women's health issues. It was required by the physician and the hospital. Now that I am revisiting that very sad period and decision, I recall that my wife became pregnant a month before the divorce was final. Their reasoning was a protection against lawsuit by me. We need to be able to have the best world in place for the new lives we bring into it and that best world has everything to do with the lives of the parents. You did nothing wrong, it just wasn't time for that life to be created and come into the world. "I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher

Big Tracking Suit - Sfly vs Squirrel vs Tonysuits
DJL replied to renedlog's topic in Gear and Rigging
My own ignorance speaking but with the exception of base jumping what's the attraction of a tracking suit rather than getting a wing-suit? "I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher -
What would you do protect your knees when you land?
DJL replied to malorie721811's topic in Safety and Training
Malorie, do you have some more clarification after these responses? Do you have an existing injury or condition with your knees? To give you an honest answer you may not want to pursue this sport if that's the case. Some people may give you the advice that you should learn to slide in your landings, however that places the impact into the very short range that your spine can absorb. Yeah, don't get me started on the ineffectiveness of fines and green credits. Big companies just laugh, pay, and keep on fucking us over. "I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher

Sort of. By setting an emissions standard you're not letting the market decide, depending on how that standard was enforced. Unfortunately, the market has a poor record of deciding what's good for the health of humanity. "I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher

Reliable data? Wingsuiters run into things all the time that they only intented to fly near. Very good ones too. http://www.blincmagazine.com/forum/wiki/BASE_Fatality_List Go to the bottom of the list and start with the most recent. Time after time: Impact/Wingsuit, Impact/Wingsuit, Impact/Wingsuit, Impact/Wingsuit, Impact/Wingsuit, Impact/Wingsuit, Impact/Wingsuit, Impact/Wingsuit, Impact/Wingsuit. What do you think would happen if that board meeting ended and the announcement was "USPA will make no restriction on wingsuiters flying in proximity to students or tandems either in freefall or under canopy."? The base fatality list is pretty thick with the worlds most experienced wingsuiters putting themselves into objects. Just....stop. http://www.blincmagazine.com/forum/wiki/BASE_Fatality_List "I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher

Yeah, and they'll also say that their favorite part was falling through the clouds or that the airplane did a flyby or that they got to eat a pound of chocolate and play on the train tracks. Wait, sorry I started thinking about children who need adult supervision because then have no understanding of the consequences. (Sorry, had to humor myself with a little sarcasm.) Are you also going to take 13 things that your collective opposites have said that you find contentious and bring them to a reliable source for review? Nothing you've said has make me stumble because I realize that your perspective is that of someone with cultural or provincial religious beliefs. You grew up in a era in which "In God We Trust" was added to money and Jerry Falwell was the voice of God. At this point it's who you are and I doubt that even words coming out the Pope's mouth would change what you think. We're just going to have to live with Max Planck's view on how society improves and embraces scientific fact not by converting its opponents but by a generation growing up understanding it as truth.
