Hey Dan, What is going to be the raccomended wing loading to get performance advantages over a 9 cell like the comp cobalt? I would say over 2.0 but I really don't have any clues. Thanks Memento Audere Semper 903

Thanks Faber! Although when looking at BASE the need is there but then I look at the accident report and I start thinking more rationally. If I ever dig into it (the possibility is there) I would choose ralatively safe sites like jumping off bridges with a decent landing area for instance. It's my understanding that nowadays the majority of the accidents happens either during landing or by stiking the wall. If a site is fairly safe for both I will assume the other risks involved. For as long as I live in the States I won't dig into it. If the law changes or if I get to live somewhere else I'll see! Memento Audere Semper 903

I know at Cross Key they use this system. IMO is the way to go. Not need for the transition from rip to throw. Memento Audere Semper 903

I did one BASE jump out El Capitan when I had not many skydive jumps; I am no skydiving expert neither BASE expert by here is my .02. It was a rush but probably I won't do it again because I would like to become a very old skydiver and I cannot accept all the risks involved in BASE. Call me a pussy. BASE and SD are different. You cannot learn freefly, RW, while doing BASE. As a matter of fact you'd better learn as many things as possible before BASE especially canopy control and packing. If you are willing to take all the risks involved into BASE and you are seriously thinking about it, become a proficient skydiver and accuracy pilot and dig into it otherwise stick with SD. I have a rod and six pins in my forarm and it's permanent. It took me a ful year to recover but now it's as good as new. It really depends on the location of it and the initial intent. Mine was design to stay until I'm six feet under. Memento Audere Semper 903

New skyball (deploys load if not caught)
nicknitro71 replied to SurfFlite's topic in Gear and Rigging
It sounds to me you guys have solved the problem of home-made-extremely-dangerous balls. If in deed it works as advertised two thumbs up! Memento Audere Semper 903 -
Interesting. This is my take. If you dive and face the tail you might want your legs a bit in but not totally against your butt for the first 2-3 sec. If you face the nose the legs must be extended like you are belly down or you risk to go vertical. Memento Audere Semper 903

Hey Dan, Is a pic of a pre-cobalt era canopy (but still Atair) valid as well? I jump a Viper! Memento Audere Semper 903

Flying after SCUBA diving - NEW RULES -
nicknitro71 replied to drenaline's topic in Safety and Training
I never SCUBA 24 h prior flying back. As simple as that. On your last day just lay out in the sun! If you do both, skydive first and then lock up your gear and SCUBA. Memento Audere Semper 903 -
Any canopy? damn good deal! X-braced: Xaos 27 9 cell: Comp Cobalt Keep it simple! Memento Audere Semper 903

I know the recommended size is in that range, that's for the velocity too. Buy hey if he's jumping a small PC does not hurt to try a bigger one and see. I am just stating that fact that these two fellas were both jumping the recommended PCs and by changing to 28" solved all the problems. Probably just coincidence, but what ain't Memento Audere Semper 903

I don't want to start a controversy here but I know few guys jumping Velocities loaded ~2.0 that had the very same problems. They put a 28" pilot chute and no more line twists or cut-way. For $80 I would give a try. Memento Audere Semper 903

Funny how a topic can drag do far away! Anyhow, I was on a skydiving "sebatical" for few years because I did not want to get a rig without a Cypres and did not have the money to buy one. Then when I got some chash I got a band new, but cheep, rig. With the money I saved on the container, reserve, and main, I got the little German thingy. Yes it is no sobstitute for proper training and altitude awarness but the way I see it, it's kinda like an insurance policy; you have it, you might never use it but if you needed it you are glad you bought it. In the case of the Cypres if you needed one and did not have it, chances are you'll never find out anyway. Memento Audere Semper 903

Let me begin saying that I am not expert. Although just telling somebody to not do something is not right even when dealing with kids. (I'm refering to real kids!). The reason being they might go ahead and do it and get hurt! Anyway heavier loaded canopy have shorter control range. If you want to swoop you must zero your vertical descent without losing too much foward speed. To do this you need to know your canopy very well and it probably comes with a lot of jumps. In high wind days you see pilots swooping and landing with no more than 1/2 of the toggle range. Of course you can stop the swoop almost at any time, with some restriction, by pulling the togles down but that ain't much fun for some. Memento Audere Semper 903

Remember few years back the skyphotographer who got in the load and jump with his camera helmet filming a tandem without his gear on and fell to death? We already deal and live in a very self-centered fucked up society so do a favor to yourself and everybody around you when you are skydiving; forget about your everyday life and look and pay attantion to others, we are all in the same boat. It does not take much to take a glance before the load and during the climb to spot very obvious problems. Yes, ultimately it is the jumper responsibility but hey everybody makes mistakes and if you can fix them before things go to shit everybody will gain from it. Memento Audere Semper 903

Coach rating in the full profile

About adding the Coach rating in the full profile? Memento Audere Semper 903 -
I finally jumped my Viper 135 loaded 1.3 and it's a great canopy. The openings are very soft although sensitive to body position. The riser pressure is fairly low and the toggles are really soft. It has some oversteer but at my wingloading nothing major. Lots of flare for landing. Memento Audere Semper 903

I bet it's for tighting the slider to a balled bungie chord on the top flap of the reserve container so the slider stays down. I've seen it few times. Memento Audere Semper 903

Hey Dan, Can you guys price a Cobalt like they do with some premium unlabeled cigars? You get the same canopy, different name, no marketing, no custom color, no fancy packeging but the same great flavour! By the way, do you know what the price of a new Viper was back in those days? Viper in the list of canopies
nicknitro71 replied to nicknitro71's topic in Suggestions and Feedback
I know, but I'm so lazy at times! Memento Audere Semper 903 -
I have a Viper 135. Although I have not jumped yet due to bad weather! Damn! Anyhow, the label says Winchester Technology UK but it was made by Atair and distributed in the US by skydepot, no longer in business. It is fully elliptical and apperently it has all the stiletto good features but it opens more softly and has more flare. A guy at my DZ flies a 120 and he really likes it. Another one had a 150 some years back and he still regrets he sold it. According to him the buttom-end flare was outstanding. This guy now jumps a Velocity 103 loaded 2.0 and he still swears about the Viper 150! Go figure! Atair then improved the design and made the Alpha, then, as we all know, the Cobalt. As soon as I jump it I'll tell you more about it. If you find one with low jumps and a good price get it! Memento Audere Semper 903
