It seems people get hung up on what the priorities should be, and argue that until X,Y or Z are solved we shouldn’t fix a problem. It’s a whole combination of factors that include cost, benefit analysis. Quite simply there are weapons that have the potential to cause great harm, beyond being a hobby item they have little value in a civilised society and relatively few are inconvenienced by removing or limiting access. No removing them doesn’t stop a nut job going on a violent spree. I would rather be in an environment where the nut job can go on a spree with a knife, than an Apache attack helicopter fully loaded with weaponry.

You are correct. I was watching the clip of Trump, there is a sound bite that the team have put in ‘mental illness and hate pull the trigger, not the gun’. Honestly it is that sentiment that sets the USA apart from the rest of the world. The word gun did not need to enter that speech once. It could have carried just as much weight if not more without that soundbite. It is pretty clearly placed in their to appease the base/NRA/2nd amendment people

What I don’t understand is how the republicans are not distancing themselves from Trump. Unless I have missed it other than one person who felt strongly enough to leave and three or four who voted in support of the resolution declaring his statement racist there has been silence. In Australia where the PM is changed more often than some people change their underwear and the UK, such behaviour from a leader would receive vocal outcries from within, with granted a rather toxic scramble for power. What is so different in US politics, or is the sad reality that there is genuinely a fairly large racist minority?

I think it’s relevant in that generally speaking there is not a great relationship between indigenous people and others here. It is not uncommon here to get insulted by indigenous people from a specific socio economic group and so that behaviour is kind of accepted where as from someone else I might have said something. It dovetails into what Bigun and others have said in another thread that ‘insults’ within a group can be acceptable, but inappropriate outside the group. I honestly don’t know, maybe that is how this man talks to everyone.

That’s an interesting question. I’m not sure if there is a difference. Keith thanks for the information, I’m across some of that. Yes I realise my ‘free’ google maps is not free. And the algorithms are clever, matching patterns, google home and Amazon Alexa constantly listening and refining their algorithms. Phillykev was active in speakers corner and from memory it was politics or the Iraq war that was the current hot topic. He worked in investment banking or something similar and whoever it was that he had upset, basically gathered up information and thread details and sent it in to his employer with him getting fired as a result. He basically posted a warning here about being careful after it happened. If I can figure out how to search in the new format I’ll see if I can find his post.

I’ve never been overly worried about my digital footprint and what suppliers gather from me. In general I’ve accepted ‘free’ or subsidised services in exchange for giving up my privacy. I fear I have woken up too late to a big mistake. First of all I am managing IoT devices for work and just spent three months implementing cyber security and I have seen just how vulnerable we are. Secondly my partner just had her ex completely ‘wipe’ her digital life, bank accounts etc despite having two factor on everything it was surprisingly easy for him to get around and part of this was ‘my’ information. Many long term posters will remember speakers corner victim Phillykev who was screwed over by a dz.com poster. So I have started the long arduous task of cleaning up my digital trail, securing everything slowly and for the first time actually reading terms and conditions before just clicking yes. I discovered that my sexy new iPhone uses my camera to ‘help’ me continually refining its algorithm for its true depth camera, even though O am not using faceid. I will also no longer be having the ‘helpful’ security shortcuts that our technical suppliers provide. Financial institutions offer credit report monitoring services, it would be really good to have a digital footprint monitoring service so highlight your vulnerabilities (despite such a service being a potential weakness)
