  1. IMO you BASE-jump from objects and skydive from aircraft.
  2. >I don't think most riggers pull the main canopy out of the d-bag I certainly hope that is not the case. I wouldn't dare to hook up a main-canopy after re-packing the reserve, without making sure the main is the right way around! In addition to that, I'm responsible for the airworthiness of the rig leaving my hands after a repack, which means I have to check that the main is in more or less jumpable condition.
  3. When trying to do a search on the Skydivers database here: http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/skydivers/db.cgi ..if you choose "South Pacific", you'll get zero results. Manually editing the URL to "Pacific" works.
  4. >Guildford, England. Are you sure that's not just a front, and that you're actually from a small planet in the vicinity of Betelgeuze? I'm from Helsinki, Finland, and I'm living in Hämeenlinna now.
  5. The CYPRES is probably too smart to be fooled by that, but I think I might have heard that you could fire an FXC12000 by slamming a trunk shut.
  6. Or you could buy a DZcom t-shirt.....
  7. >In reference to the sound of skydivers, has anyone heard >ever heard a jumper in freefall from a stationary position? Oh yes, we make quite a lot of noise. On a no-wind day it's very easy to hear jumpers in freefall directly above you, if there are no other sources of noise on the ground or in the air. I'm sure the birds have no trouble hearing us a mile away.
  8. So how is this solved? Without seeing the system or pictures of it, it's difficult to visualize how it works. Is the Skyhook attached to one riser only, as was mentioned in an earlier post? Are there pictures available of the system?
  9. Well, on my home DZ for example, if the main doesn't land on the airfield, it's either in a lake or in a tree. The best you can do is to see which bit of the forest the stuff lands, and then head for the airfield. We had a tandem cut-away last summer, and we had a pretty good idea on where to find the main and the freebag. We took a car, drove to the woods and parked the car on the side of a road. We found the main pretty quickly, but searched for the freebag for 45 minutes without success. We were getting back to the car, when the freebag was found. It was hanging in the tree next to our parked car.
  10. I think it would probably be pretty easy on a large reserve(WL~1.0), but it could be difficult on a smaller(WL>1.5) one. I have no doubt it would be easier and less time-consuming to release a WLO-toggle than it would be to use a hook knife. But it took you a while(I've seen the video)... Well, if there was a serious reserve-mal, one spinning fast, with line-twists down to the jumpers neck, it would be difficult to locate the WLO-release, but it would still be easier than blindly slashing with a hook-knife.

  12. Seems like it's a good time to bump this thread back up.... What I forgot to ask the last time around was: Would it be legal for a master rigger to retrofit WLO-toggles to a reserve?
  13. If you're tight on the money, S/L might be a better idea: you get to jump more often since the jumps are cheaper, and therefore you'll be more current.
  14. >Personally, I hate the format set-up on the NG!!! It's a >pain-in-the-ass for me. I never even logged on! The formatting depends on the news-reader you use. You don't need to "log on" to use a newsgroup. Unless you have been using the Google-groups interface... I agree; that sucks bigtime(and yes you have to log on to use that).
  15. I've played the first AvP. The atmosphere was unbelievable. Ripping the head off an unsuspecting marine kicks ass! A friend of mine was playing AvP as a marine, in the middle of the night, with headphones on. Sneaking around expecting an attack any second. Then suddenly, something brushes against his leg in real life! The poor guy screams aloud, jumps out of his chair, and his dog bolts out of the room, probably thinking "WTF did I do now?"
  16. How about you keep the rig, but ask if you can get something from the manufacturer as compensation since it wasn't what you ordered(gift certificate, a few t-shirts, or something)?
  17. I think one would get more reliable readings from a GPS-logger, mounted on the helmet of a birdman. Combined with data from a Protrack(do they work with BASE anyway?) it would be easy to calculate the forward speed.
  18. >Has anybody jumped with a hangover and how did the jump(s) go? Yup. Lost altitude awareness, was open at around 400m(~1200ft), did the last turn too low and impacted the turf knee first in front of a couple of hundred spectators. Nothing broken but my knee was sort of black and blue for two weeks. Not recommended.
  19. I wonder if he has planted any in Hämeenlinna? You know, there's a pizzeria downstairs from my apartment, operated by a few middle-eastern guys... You think they might have a WMD set up in their kitchen?
  20. Really? So I'm even more influenced by american english than I knew, the phrase sounded completely alien to me... Oh well, you live and learn. Sorry Phil.
  21. >you're right - now does that make you a smartarse or smartass? Tough one. I do tend to think that I've been more under the influence of american english, so that would make me a smartass. Come visit the remnants of the NonAmerican-thread in my DZ's chatroom, the link is in my sig!
  22. >which part of the cabbage do you not eat? > >...the wheelchair.. Just a wild guess; english isn't your first language? People with 'diminished mental capacity' are usually referred to as "vegetables" in english.(AFAIK, it's not my 1st language either....)
  23. >Now does everyone know where their towel is?! My towel is in my backpack right next to me.
